Image A: The development length is provided in the beam and column junction. Due
to this the stresses developed are easily transferred by the bond created by steel and
concrete.
Image B: The development length is not provided in the beam and column junction.
Due to this the stresses developed in the beams will not be able to transfer it to the
column.
Lap Length: Lap length is the minimum length that must be provided if two bars are
joined together such that the forces can be transferred easily.
Image A: Check the lap splice provided in the beam. The length of the overlap
changes depending on the flexural tension, direct tension and compression, In our
practical site condition it is taken about 50 x diameter of bar.
Image B: Check the image if bars are not overlapped no forces are transferred.

Lap length is the length of the overlap of bar required to safely transfer stress from
one bar to another. Lap length is different in case of tension and compression zones
and mainly depends on grade of concrete and steel . If two different dia bars are to be
lapped, lap length is based on smaller dia .

Definition – Development Length is provided to transfer the load from steel to
concrete. Development Length is also known as anchorage length. What is the difference between lap length and
development length in steel reinforcement?
According to IS 456:2000, the calculated tension or compression in any bar at any
section shall be developed on each side of the section by providing appropriate
development length or by an end anchorage. So that the member won’t be slipped
away from the support.

lap length is the length that is provided in excess over another bar to lap one bar over
another. It mainly depends on Steel dia used in reinforcement, grade of concrete to be
used and zone it is used .
Anchorage length is one type of development length provided inside the fixed or
support end. It is 4 times dia of bar for 180 Degree bend,6 times for 135 degree and 8
times for 90 degree bend of bar.
Development length is just the length of bar required to be provided to transfer load
or stress from steel to concrete.
