Answers
(1) 8000 km

Step 1
Let us assume x as the distance covered by the cars, so that Ridhima's total cost for both the cars
is same.

Step 2
It is given that petrol is Rs. 58.30 per liter and the petrol car can travel 11 kilometers in 1 liter.
So,the cost of 11 kilometers traveled by the petrol car = Rs. 58.30
58.30
Then the cost of 1 kilometer traveled by the petrol car =
11
58.30x
Therefore, the cost of x kilometers traveled by the petrol car =
11

Step 3
Diesel is Rs. 52.70 per liter and the diesel car can travel 17 kilometers in 1 liter.
So, the cost of 17 kilometers traveled by the diesel car = Rs. 52.70
52.70
Then the cost of 1 kilometer traveled by the diesel car =
17
52.70x
Cost of x kilometers traveled by the diesel car =
17

Step 4
The diesel car costs Rs. 17600 more than the petrol car.
58.30x 52.70x
Therefore, = + 17600
11 17
58.30x 52.70x
⇒ - = 17600
11 17
⇒ 5.3x - 3.1x = 17600
⇒ 2.2x = 17600
17600
⇒x= = 8000 kilometers
2.2

Step 5
Thus, she must drive 8000 km before the savings in fuel covers the extra price of the diesel car.

(2) x=4

Let us solve the given equation by following the given steps:

x
+ 0.6 = 5.6
0.8
x
⇒ = 5.6 - 0.6
0.8
x
⇒ =5
0.8
⇒ x = 5 × (0.8)
Thus, x = 4

(3) 400

Step 1
Let us assume that the number of girls in the school are x.
58 58x
58% of x = x × =
100 100

Step 2
According to the question, 58% of the girls study arts and the remaining girls are 168.
Total number of girls in the school = 58% of x + Remaining girls
58x
⇒x= + 168
100
58x + 168 × 100
⇒x=
100
58x + 16800
⇒x=
100
By cross multiplying:
100x = 58x + 16800
⇒ 100x - 58x = 16800
⇒ 42x = 16800
16800
⇒x=
42
⇒ x = 400

Step 3
Therefore, there are 400 girls in the school.

(4) 56x - 8y

Step 1
Number of days in one week = 7 days
Therefore, the number of days in 8 weeks = 8 × 7
= 56 days

Step 2
Amount earned by Neha in one day = Rs. x
Therefore, the amount earned by her in 8 weeks, or 56 days = Rs. 56x

Step 3
Amount spent by Neha in one week = Rs. y
Therefore, the amount spent by her in 8 weeks = Rs. 8y

Step 4
Thus, Neha's 8 weeks saving = Amount earned in 8 weeks - Amount spent in 8 weeks
= Rs. 56x - Rs. 8y

(5) 6

Step 1
According to the question, the dimensions of the rectangular field are 19x - 26 and 10x + 28 units.

Step 2
We know that all the sides of a square are equal. For a rectangular field to be square, all the sides
of the rectangular field should be equal.
Therefore, 19x - 26 = 10x + 28
⇒ 19x - 10x = 28 + 26
⇒ 9x = 54
54
⇒x=
9
⇒x=6

Step 3
Therefore, the value of x is 6.

Step 1
1
According to the question, Number of days left in the month of November = × Number of days
4
already passed

Step 2
Let the number of days already passed be .

Step 3

So, the number of days left in the month of November =

4

Step 4
We know that the total number of days in the month of November are 30

So, + = 30
4
5
Or, = 30
4
30 × 4
Or, = = 24
5

Step 5
24
Therefore, the number of days are left in the month of November = = 6 days

(7) c

Step 1
-b
Here we have to find the value of ax² + bx + c, where the value of x is .
a

Step 2
Let us place the value of x in ax² + bx + c.
-b -b
= a( )² + b( )+c
a a
b² -b
=a× +b×( ) +c
a² a
b² b²
= - +c
a a
=c

Step 3
Thus, the value of ax² + bx + c is c.

(8) Rs. 28

Step 1
Let us assume that the number of 50 paise coins in the piggy bank are x.
Therefore, the number of 25 paise coins in the piggy bank = 2x

Step 2
Total number of coins in the bag = x + 2x = 84
⇒ 3x = 84
84
⇒x=
3
⇒ x = 28

Step 3
Number of 50 paise coins in the piggy bank = x = 28
Number of 25 paise coins in the piggy bank = 2x
= 2 × 28
= 56

Step 4
1
1 coin of 25 paise coin = Rs.
4
1
⇒ 56 coins of 25 paise coins = × 56 = Rs. 14
4

Step 5
1
1 coin of 50 paise coin = Rs.
2
1
⇒ 28 coins of 50 paise coins = × 28 = Rs. 14
2

Step 6
Therefore, the total amount = Rs. 14 + Rs. 14
= Rs. 28

(9) 27

Step 1
Let us assume that x is the given number.

Step 2
It is given that if x is multiplied by 5, it increases by 108.
Therefore,
  5x = x + 108
⇒ 5x - x = 108
⇒ 4x = 108
108
⇒x=
4
⇒ x = 27

Step 3
Thus, the number is 27

(10) 250

Step 1
According to the question, the value of x is 5 and we have to find the value of y.

Step 2

(12) m 2 + 2m + 2

Step 1
If we look at the shown patterns carefully, we notice that the patterns are following the rule (m+2)m
+ 2, where m is the number of patterns.

Step 2

Therefore, the number of bulbs shown in Pattern m are m 2 + 2m + 2.

(13) 28

Step 1
Let x be the original number.

Step 2
If we look at the question carefully, we notice that if x is multiplied by 7 and 15 is added to the
product, then the result will be equal to 211.
Or, we can say that 7x + 15 = 211
⇒ 7x = 211 - 15
⇒ 7x = 196
196
⇒x=
7
⇒ x = 28

Step 3
Therefore, the original number is 28.

(14) a. x = 3, y = 5

Step 1
Here, we are given an equation with 2 variables, i.e., x + y = 8.
It is not possible to find the value of x and y from the given equation, as we require 2 equations to
find the value of 2 variables.

Step 2
However, we can substitute the values of x and y given in the options to check the correctness of
the equations. Among the given options, we can see that only x = 3, y = 5 satisfies the equation.
 x + y = 8
⇒3+5=8
⇒8=8

Step 3
Hence, option a is the correct answer.

(15) a. 4 ÷ y

Step 1
If we look at the question carefully, we will notice that the value of y lies between 0 and 1.

Step 2
Let us assume that the value of y is 0.5 (between 0 and 1).
By putting the value of y in 4 ÷ y, we will notice:
4 ÷ y = 4 ÷ 0.5
= 4/0.5
= (4 × 10)/5
=8
This way, we can find out the value of all the options and will notice that the value of 4 ÷ y is the
greatest. Hence, we can say that 4 ÷ y have the greatest value.

Step 3
Thus, option a is the correct answer.
