Citrix XenApp is a Windows(r) application delivery system that centralizes application management into the datacenter and enables
on-demand application delivery to users anywhere using any device. Utilizing integrated application virtualization technology, XenApp
overcomes the challenges associated with archaic application deployment methods to reduce the cost of application management by
up to 50 percent, deliver applications instantly to users and secure application access
Traditional application management enables application deployment to users via remote installation technologies. This archaic
method of application management entails:
1. Creating a multiple pre-configured application installs for each operating system via application packaging
2. Testing and troubleshooting these application packages against various user configurations to draw out inter-application and
platform compatibility issues
3. Re-testing each application package on each operating system or user configuration
4. Scheduling remote application deployment to specific user groups
5. Troubleshooting failed application deployment and compatibility issues
6. Repeating the process with each application update
As a method of application management, application deployment is mired by a number of challenges including compatibility issues
between applications, application packaging and remote install reliability issues, platform support limitations, and the fact that all user
devices must be managed PC’s or a member of the domain. Furthermore, there are many hidden costs which can almost double the
expense of application management when compared to modern application packaging and delivery methods. These include higher
hardware and support costs as well as significant business inefficiencies related to lack of IT agility.
In contrast to application deployment, application virtualization with Citrix XenApp is a more modern method of application
management. The process of application virtualization with Citrix XenApp is similar to that of traditional application deployment with
some noticeable differences and benefits as follows:
1. With application virtualization, a single package is created vs. the multiple packages needed with application deployment
2. Testing and troubleshooting application virtualization packages is far easier and takes less time because fewer user
configurations need testing when compared to traditional application deployment and installation solutions.
3. Application virtualization packages are delivered on-demand as opposed to traditional application deployment which is
scheduled for installation during off-peak hours. This ensures that all users get the applications they need when they need
them.
4. Troubleshooting is far easier with application virtualization because issues are corrected once and are fixed for all users
instantly. Self-healing technology means that applications will always run as if they were freshly installed. This is in contrast to
traditional application deployment where issues must be resolved individually on each user device and where correcting
problems can sometimes require a fresh installation.
5. Application virtualization is far less resource intensive than application deployment because updates are configured once
and propogate to all users instantly.
Application virtualization with XenApp delivers users the applications they need on-demand and avoids many of the problems
associated with traditional application deployment. In fact, Citrix XenApp has been shown to reduce application management costs by
up to 50%.

1. Single instance management
To simplify application management Citrix XenApp stores application packages on centralized network storage. Compared to
traditional application deployment which requires multiple application packages to support many diverse user configurations,
application management with XenApp requires only a single package for each application. Application packages created with XenApp
contain all of the necessary information for delivery to any supported operating system. Once packaged, XenApp utilizes application
streaming to deliver applications to target devices, whether they be user PC’s or XenApp hosting servers. To this end, XenApp also
simplifies the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of hosting servers via integrated server image management. With single
image server management, XenApp can provision additional application hosting capacity in the time it takes to boot a server.
Furthermore, XenApp updates and upgrades can be rolled out to all servers with a simple reboot. Single instance management
greatly simplifies application management and makes XenApp the most efficient and dynamic application delivery system in its class.
When users request an application XenApp determines the best delivery method for the application in real-time. If the user has the
correct Receiver software, security profile, and meets pre-determined network, hardware, and application requirements, then XenApp
utilizes local application delivery. With local application delivery, XenApp uses application streaming to deliver the application into an
isolated environment on the users PC. This form of delivery uses the PC’s local computing resources to run the application and
enables users to take applications with them even while they are disconnected from the network. Alternatively, if XenApp determines
that the users device cannot run the application locally, then XenApp falls back to hosted application delivery. With hosted application
delivery, XenApp uses application streaming to deliver the application to hosting servers and connects the user to a remote session
running their application. This form of delivery uses data center resources to run the application and enables users to access
applications from anywhere. Dynamic application delivery makes it possible for XenApp to deliver applications with the highest level of
application compatibility to any device while ensuring the most optimal performance and user experience.
3. Any device, anywhere
XenApp surpasses traditional application deployment solutions by utilizing application virtualization technology to deliver any
application to any device. Citrix Receiver and Receiver plugins enable application delivery to Windows, Mac, Linux and even UNIX
devices. Over 20 manufacturers such as HP, Wyse, and iGel include XenApp plugin software in their thin-client and access device
products. Even users on iPhone, iPod Touch, Windows Mobile, Symbian and EPOCH devices can access Windows and UNIX
applications delivered via XenApp. The ability to deliver any application to any device, anywhere makes XenApp the most complete
application management solution on the market today.

4. High definition experience
XenApp has been built to ensure the best experience and performance for users regardless of their device, operating system or
connection. For applications delivered to the users local device, HDX IntelliCache accelerates initial application deployment and
optimizes application communications. For applications hosted on servers, HDX MediaStream, 3D, RealTime, IntelliCache and
Broadcast technologies work together to orchestrate the most optimized computing experience – even over high latency connections.
In fact, regardless of the delivery method used, application management with XenApp enables a better-than-installed user experience
when compared to traditional application deployment and installation. This is accomplished by preserving the “like-installed”
computing experience that users are accustomed to while enhancing application portability, security and function. For example, the
EasyCall voice services technology included with XenApp enables Voice over IP dialing and call conferencing capabilities to be
integrated into any application without custom development. Furthermore, integrated profile management software ensures that user,
application and environment settings remain consistent as users roam between devices and operating systems. This extensive
portfolio of application virtualization, performance and delivery optimization technologies make XenApp the only application
management solution capable of delivering a high definition user experience to any user on any device.
5. Secure by design
Centralized application management and application virtualization is the most secure architecture for delivering applications. With
hosted application delivery, XenApp keeps data in the datacenter while only screen updates, mouse clicks and keystrokes transit the
network. For local application delivery and as an extra added security measure for hosted applications, centralized password control,
multi-factor authentication, encrypted delivery and a hardened SSL VPN appliance eliminate the chance for loss or theft of data. Built-
in configuration logging and SmartAuditor technology enable IT to track system changes and even record user activity into a video file
to keep a visual record of system and application use for security and litigation purposes. Application management with XenApp
makes increases application portability and user productivity while ensuring data security and IT access control.
6. Enterprise class infrastructure
As an enterprise class infrastructure for application management, XenApp can support implementations with as few as 2 servers or
scale on-demand to support multiple data centers, thousands of users and multiple sites throughout the world. In fact, as the most
mature application virtualization solution on the market, XenApp is proven to support more than 50,000 users, scale beyond 1,000
servers in a single implementation and ensure 99.999 percent application availability. This scalability is made easy with integrated
XenServer virtualization technology and provisioning services. When used together, they enable IT to scale their XenApp server farm
to support thousands of new users on-demand. Built in load testing, performance monitoring and activity logging tools help IT to size
their infrastructure correctly, monitor usage and performance, scale when needed, resolve issues quickly, and even pinpoint malicious
behavior. This enterprise-class foundation enables IT to meet service level agreements and quickly respond to business and user
needs. With XenApp, corporate IT teams finally have the global, scalable, end-to-end application management solution that IT has
been looking for.

What is Xen?
Xen is a unique open source technology invented by a team led by Ian Pratt at the University of Cambridge and developed
cooperatively by the world’s best engineers at over 20 of the most innovative datacenter solution vendors. With Xen server
virtualization solutions, a thin software layer (known as the Xen hypervisor) is installed directly on the hardware, or bare metal, and is
thereby inserted between the server’s hardware and the operating system. This provides an abstraction layer that allows each
physical server to run one or more virtual servers, effectively decoupling the operating system and its applications from the underlying
physical server. Xen’s paravirtualization technology is widely acknowledged as the fastest and most secure virtualization software in
the industry and is enhanced by taking full advantage of the latest Intel VT and AMD-V™ hardware virtualization assist capabilities.
The Xen hypervisor is exceptionally lean-– about 50,000 lines of code-–which translates to extremely low overhead and near-native
performance for guests.

Smaller XenApp and XenDesktop deployments can now benefit from the same integrated secure remote access, global server load
balancing and load balancing for Web Interface and XML broker that NetScaler appliances provide, and run it using the same server
infrastructure used to run XenApp itself.
NetScaler VPX can be easily incorporated into development and lab environments, making it easy to integrate NetScaler load
balancing, application acceleration and application security functionality into application development and test cycles. Development
teams can easily tap all of NetScaler’s advanced functionality, and by making it easy to include NetScaler in test cycles there is less
likelihood of application and network conflicts when new applications are rolled out.
Service providers, cloud providers or any organization that host web applications can provision and de-provision NetScaler VPX
instances on demand, using general datacenter capacity and automation processes already in place. Infrastructure reuse is
increased, datacenter footprints are reduced, and new hosting needs are met faster.
In addition to supporting datacenters relying upon virtualized server and application resources, NetScaler VPX enables Web
application load balancing, acceleration, security and offload to become virtualized services that can be easily deployed on-demand
anywhere in the datacenter. Web applications and their associated Web application delivery services are brought closer together, and
established datacenter processes for tasks such as provisioning, automation and charge-back can be used for the Web application
delivery infrastructure.
NetScaler VPX can be incorporated within larger automation/orchestration solutions using Citrix Workflow Studio or orchestration
solutions from Citrix partners, enabling organizations to provision load balancing and advanced web application delivery services on-
the-fly as application instances themselves are spun up.
As multiple cloud datacenters begin to be used, NetScaler VPX instances can easily ‘follow their app’. Global data center
architectures, using “virtual-only” footprints in the specific datacenters where it makes sense, are possible, eliminating the need to
replicate specialized physical infrastructure in every datacenter or hosting facility.

Availability
A free tech preview of NetScaler VPX will be available May 18, 2009. General commercial availability is scheduled for the third quarter
of 2009.
As Web applications become increasingly complex and demanding due to Web 2.0 trends and the proliferation of Rich Internet
Applications (RIA), Web application delivery solutions will be required to provide greater levels of application availability, acceleration,
security and infrastructure offload. Web application delivery solutions will need to provide L4-7 load balancing, caching, compression,
application security, SSL offload and more at multi-gigabit speeds. NetScaler nCore technology delivers a 7X increase in performance
and scalability and provides new levels of advanced web application delivery performance for even the most challenging web
applications.

NetScaler 9 includes over 350 new features or enhancements to existing features. The following provides a summary of the major
enhancements.
AppExpert Templates
AppExpert Templates encapsulate the entire NetScaler configuration and
policy for a given application in one place.
25 Confidential
AppExpert Visualizer
The AppExpert Visualizer graphically illustrates how requests and
responses flow through NetScaler, and what policies act where. It
provides a graphical, tree-based, hierarchical view of the entities (e.g.,
content switching VServers, LB VServers, service pools, individual
services and health checks) that compose the NetScaler configuration, as
well as their current health. The AppExpert Visualizer simplifies monitoring
and managing the complex configurations today’s Web applications
require. View a demo of AppExpert Visualizer.
Many Web 2.0 applications rely on server push techniques, such a long polling or HTTP streaming, which demand that servers
manage very large numbers of long-lived client connections. Managing long-lived client connections places substantial burden on
server system resources and adversely impacts performance and scalability.
With new Web 2.0 Push technology, NetScaler offloads the connection management of these long-lived sessions, freeing the servers
of this task and improving overall server utilization while reducing server footprint in the data center. In addition, Web 2.0 Push
improves application performance by reducing the time that data spends time on server waiting for client to pull data.
A simple example of this would be IP blacklisting, where an AppExpert Service Callout passes source IP data to an external database
that responds with a decision as to whether or not requests from that IP address should be passed. SPAM evaluation is a similar
example. Other possible uses are integration with external AAA or identity management applications, passing data to an external
transformation engine or invoking UDDI registries.
AppExpert Rate Controls can be used for straight-forward rate limiting such as DNS rate-limiting or rate-limiting traffic originating from
a defined source. It can also control how much traffic is sent to a given resource (e.g., anything from a VServer to a specific URL),
providing the ability to control how much capacity is used by users or applications. For example, if a NetScaler is providing load
balancing for two applications that share a single 10 Mbps link, AppExpert Rate Controls can be used to limit each application to
consuming no more than 5 Mbps.
AppExpert Rate Controls give administrators the ability to take actions beyond what basic network rate-shaping or QoS provide, and
to govern resources at a far more granular level. By integrating AppExpert Rate Controls into the fully application-aware policy engine
of NetScaler, administrators aren’t limited to just throttling traffic based upon IP address and port, but have the full depth and breadth
of NetScaler traffic management, acceleration and security functionality at their disposal.
26 Confidential
For example, Web site capacity can be effectively increased by content-switching requests coming from spiders, Web scrapers or
botnets to a dedicated mirror-site, so that the main Web site is freed from the heavy load this traffic generates.
XML Security
The NetScaler Application Firewall module now includes an XML-aware engine that powers specific XML attack protections. In
addition to protecting XML-based applications from attack, NetScaler ensures that incoming XML traffic conforms to the appropriate
standards (e.g., XML syntax, schema, WSDL validation).
URL Transformation
NetScaler 9 can provide on the fly content modification of client requests and server responses to rewrite HTTP URLs. This enables
the modification of displayed URLs without the need to modify the back-end server structure, and vice versa.
Body URL Rewrite is frequently used within the context of either SSL VPNs or Web application firewalls. However, it has uses beyond
these as well. For example, body URL rewrite can simplify application or infrastructure change management by allowing back-end
URLs to be altered without requiring changes to the application’s presentation layer, or for Akamai-zing graphics content.
Entity Templates
Entity Templates provide the means for administrators to create templates for specific entities (e.g., a LB VServer, CS VServer) in
order to simplify the creation of additional instances of the same entity, and reduce the potential for configuration errors.
Entity templates will prove very useful when used in conjunction with NetScaler’s role-based administration (RBA) functionality.
Specifically, more privileged NetScaler administrators can create entity templates for specific functions and then delegate the use of
these templates to administrators with lesser privileges. By doing this, NetScaler superusers can simultaneously constrain the actions
of lesser privileged and experienced administrators, and simplify things for these same administrators.
• IPv6 support for XenApp client connections are now supported, meeting U.S. Federal Government requirements for IPv6
support.
• Single sign-on to file shares improves user experience by minimizing authentication prompts.
• Clientless access to Microsoft SharePoint 2003 and 2007 expands user mobility by ensuring easy and secure access to
SharePoint sites from any Web browser.
• Historical charting graphical reporting provides administrators with detailed views on system activity and simplifies
management by presenting trend data in an intuitive format.
IPv6 Support
NetScaler 9 provides end-to-end support for IPv6, greatly enhancing the initial NetScaler IPv6 implementation available in NetScaler
8.1. NetScaler 9.0 natively supports and manages client-side and server-side IPv6 traffic as well bidirectional IPv4 to IPv6 translation.
Akamai Integration
Working with Akamai, NetScaler 9 preserves and presents to applications source ClientIPs for requests that come in via the Akamai
cloud. This is critical for auditing or fraud detection purposes.
GSLB Enhancements
NetScaler Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) enhancements include auto-synchronization of configurations across different GSLB
sites, consolidated GSLB health checks and support for up to 32 GSLB nodes.
27 Confidential
Routing Enhancements
NetScaler 9 includes enhancements to NetScaler route-health injection (RHI) and adds support for monitored static routes and
weighted static routes.
New Monitors
NetScaler 9 includes pre-built application monitors for Citrix Access Gateway™ including an Access Gateway Monitor, an AAC login
page monitor and an AAC Logon Agent Service monitor.
Streamlined Management
The following items have been added to streamline NetScaler administration:
1. Security Wipe provides the ability to completely erase the NetScaler configuration.
2. Configuration diffing enables administrators to identify differences between the running and saved NetScaler configurations.
3. The performance of the NetScaler GUI is improved by four to five times.
4. The AppExpert Visual Policy Builder (the GUI interface used to create NetScaler policies) has been simplified, streamlining
the creation of most NetScaler policies.
5. Integration of the NetScaler configuration GUI and the real-time performance statistics minimizes the need for NetScaler
administrators to switch back and forth between the configuration and dashboard tabs within the NetScaler GUI.
6. AppExpert Expression Evaluator allows administrators to test how expressions will evaluate HTTP content prior to binding
expressions to policies.
