Final Summative Assessment Task

Summative Task Geometry City

Grade 5

Subject Mathematics

Strand Geometry and Spatial Sense

Expectations – construct a three-dimensional figure from a picture or model of the

figure, using connecting cubes (e.g., use connecting cubes to
construct a rectangular prism);

– construct skeletons of three-dimensional figures, using a variety of

tools (e.g., straws and modelling clay, toothpicks and marshmallows,
Polydrons), and sketch the skeletons;

– draw and describe nets of rectangular and triangular prisms

(Sample problem: Create as many different nets for a cube as you
can, and share your results with a partner.);

– construct prisms and pyramids from given nets;

– construct three-dimensional figures (e.g., cube, tetrahedron), using

only congruent shapes.

Explanation This is a unit summative evaluation project. The students are

expected to build a 3-D geometry city. The students begin by
creating an outline of what they want their city to look like. They are
expected to follow the design checklist (see below). The design
checklist is clear and outlines exactly what is expected of them when
they are creating their city. After their outline is complete, the teacher
will provide each student with a ‘permit’ that allows them to begin
building their tangible city. Students will then cut out nets and use
them as their buildings. Finally, when their city is completed, the
students will photograph their cities and market them to other
students. The students should convince others that their city would
be the best city to live in using a pamphlet. Pamphlets will also
include relevant math information such as perimeters and areas of
buildings, parks, road ways, etc.
Rationale This project is cross-curricular and exciting for students. I chose
Geometry City as the final summative task because it is relatable. I
want student's to feel that their summative tasks have value and add
to their life. By allowing student's to create their own city, they are
practicing and providing evidence for their their geometry, spacial
sense, literacy and media skills in a way that is relevant to them.
Students LOVE this activity and are sad when it is over.
Assessment The teacher will use the Geometry City Rubric to assess the final
creation. The rubric is clear and hits all the expectations within the
project. Lastly, students will be provided a self-assessment rubric
and will assess their own work. The teacher will use his/her rubric for
the final grade but can take the self-assessment into consideration if
the student feels they deserve a different grade. The self-assessment
is more-so for practice and to have students think critically about
their work.
