Remediation of Existing Embankment due to Liquefaction

Susceptibility

1. Project Description

An earth embankment located in West Lampung requires assessments of its


liquefaction potential susceptibility and a recommendation of the proper ground
improvement method to prevent stability failure of embankment. From
Geological Maps and Earthquake Catalogue, the seismic source around
embankment site consists of three main considerable faults as can be seen at
figure below:

2. Soil Stratigraphy

There are some soil types beneath embankment foundation. Soil data were
collected from three bored holes by Standard Penetration Test (SPT), at upstream
(BH-01), beneath (BH-02) and downstream (BH-03) of embankment. The top
layer soil is clean sand which has higher chance to induce liquefaction. The
thickness of each soil types is shown in table below:

catalogue for each of seismic sources are shown at table below:

The picture above is the cross section of embankment geometry and


subsurface soil conditions. Soil data were collected from three bored holes by
standard penetration test, at upstream (BH-01), beneath (BH02) and
downstream (BH-03) of embankment. Boring Log of three bored holes can
be seen at attachments.
