Did you know that over 800,000 Black people in the United States were not

counted in the 2010 census?1 That’s roughly the size of the entire population of
Alaska.

It’s easy to think of the census as just a head count. But it’s so much more than that. $675
billion dollars is distributed for important programs like Medicaid, children’s health
insurance, and the National School Lunch Program.2 And if Black folks are undercounted,
our communities could be severely underfunded.

That’s why this year, Color Of Change is launching an organizing program to get out
the count for the 2020 Census in Black communities nationwide. We will be holding
events across the country to make sure Black communities are informed and excited about
the 2020 Census. In order to make this initiative a reality, we need $20,000 to launch a
new website and rollout hyper-targeted digital ads to Black folks.

Will you donate $5 to help us pilot our new census education program for Black
communities?

There is a disturbing history of Black people being undercounted in the Census. After
colonizing Native land throughout America, white settlers created the Three Fifths
Compromise wherein each enslaved African was counted as three-fifths of a person.3
Although times have changed, Black people are still undercounted, particularly young Black
children. In the 2010 Census, young Black children were undercounted at twice the rate as
young non-black children. This is unacceptable.

The Census has been chronically underfunded for many years 4, and we’re committed to
reversing a Black undercount in 2020 and beyond. You may have received our 2020 Census
Survey5 last week, which has gotten over 7,000 responses! Based on that feedback, we
have a sense of what information people need about the Census, and we're launching a
program to reach Black folks, online and in person, on an unprecedented scale. But in
order to do this, we need your support.

Bernardo, will you help us re-prioritize a fair Census count for Black people
nationwide today? Our count matters.

Until justice is real,

Jenni, Charles, Reagan, Scott, Daniel, and the Color Of Change team
