INTRODUCTION
Anniversary issue: 40 years of research in leisure, culture and tourism
Denis Auger – Editor-in-Chief, Professor* and Maude St-Laurent Student/research assistant
For this anniversary issue, we would like to introduce our new cover. We keep the time
concept as a central component; however, we have added elements directly related to the
different fields of leisure. Can you find them all?
The journal Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure has just completed 40 years of
publication in Canada. In 1978, the Department of Leisure, Culture and Tourism Studies
of the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières took over the journal, which had been
previously published in Prague between 1967 and 1974. The department, supported by
the university administration and its publishers (Taylor & Francis, since 2013; and the
Presses de l’Université du Québec, from 1978 to 2012), have made this journal a
recognized publication in the field of leisure research.
Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure, a scientific journal dedicated to the study of
leisure, is renowned for its international audiences and multidisciplinary approach to
each aspect, as well as all leisure issues. The journal is multidisciplinary in that it
involves a variety of disciplines that capture and reflect on leisure phenomena. It
examines leisure with relation to other dimensions such as family, environment, com-
munication, culture and governance, economy, public service, etc. The journal maintains
an open approach to the concept of leisure and its evolving nature. This is why it focuses
on the production of themes that are always renewed and topical. Its thematic approach
seeks a balance between empirical research and research of a theoretical or fundamental
nature. This results in a journal that is able to serve leisure professionals and decision
makers. In addition, it is one of the only journals in Canada and abroad to publish articles
in this scientific field in both French and English. These distinctive features of the
journal allow it to expand and reach readers in more than 30 countries and from all
continents.
To illustrate the scope and evolution of Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure over the
past 40 years, we did a literature review of all the articles published during this period.
These were subjected to a content analysis to identify the main research themes.
Please note that the statistics presented in this introduction are for illustrative
purposes only.
Over the past 40 years, Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure has published more than
960 manuscripts. These fall into the following categories of publication: original research
article, review article, case study, research notes, book review, editorial, opinion, com-
mentary and technical report. The number of manuscripts published every year varied
between 15 and 51 (see Figure 1). The highest number of publications (51), in 1985, can
be attributed to the fact that the journal published conference proceedings of the 4th
Canadian Conference on Leisure Research (CCLR) and the Francophone Association for
Knowledge congress (ACFAS).
It is important to note that the journal went from two issues per year to three issues
per year when the journal changed its publisher in 2013 (this change in the number of
issues actually started in 2015). The journal switched from the Presses de l’Université du
Québec (PUQ) to Taylor & Francis. This transfer to Taylor & Francis saved the journal.
As shown in Figure 1, the journal fell on some very hard times between 2005 and 2012,
as illustrated by the low number of publications.
The journal presents itself as being bilingual (French and English). By examining the
distribution of manuscripts between the two languages (see Figure 2), there is an almost
perfect distribution between the two: 474 documents in French and 469 documents in
English. Therefore, the magazine is clearly bilingual.
Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure is an international journal, in terms of both
content and current or potential readership. It is a scientific dissemination tool that has
been very useful for international and Canadian researchers since its inception. In
addition, the journal provides access to many authors from around the world who publish
the results of their research and thus see them broadcast to a global audience.
When reviewing the authors of the journal, we can see that they come from all over the
world, more than 30 countries. Of these countries, Canada and the United States represent
most of the published articles. On the Canadian side, six provinces are represented in the
database of publications, while on the American side there are over 15 different states.
It is also interesting to note the wide variety of different authors in the journal. Of the
more than 1200 authors who have published in the journal, over 1000 have published
only once. There is also a certain level of recurrence with some authors (over 100
authors) who have published more than once in the journal. Of this number, 29 authors
have published more than five articles in the journal.
The qualitative analysis shows that the different articles or manuscripts fall under six
major themes: leisure, sport, health, outdoor recreation, tourism and culture. As

journal with more than 40%, followed by tourism and culture, 17% and 16%, respec-
tively. The last three themes, sport, health and outdoor recreation, represent respectively
9%, 9% and 8% of publications over the last 40 years.
Considering the importance of these six themes for the first 40 years of the journal,
six articles examining the evolution of the six themes are presented in this special issue.

The article by Karlis, Stratas and Webb (‘Canadian-based peer-reviewed leisure studies
research: From the 1970s to today’) examines the evolution of publications and recreational
research over the past 40 years at the Canadian level. Roult, Machemehl and Gaudette (‘40
ville’) present the results of a systematic review of publications linking sport and the city
that have been published in Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure since its launch. The article
by Lapointe and Luckerhoff (‘L’apport de la revue Loisir et Société dans le champ culturel’)
analyzes all the issues of the journal to determine its contribution to the cultural field. Spirou
(‘Social forces and the evolution of tourism: A historical framework of urban change’)
examines the conditions that have led to the rise of tourism as a tool for economic urban
development since the 1960s and 1970s. Carbonneau and Duquette (‘Loisir et Société : 40
Society and Leisure has published dealing with the theme of leisure and health. A qualitative
analysis was carried out that made it possible to highlight recurring themes related to the
leisure, health and optimal development of individuals. Finally, the article by Branget,
the evolution and importance of research for the promotion of outdoor activities.
As the articles in this issue illustrate, Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure continues
its efforts to provide a comprehensive knowledge base on leisure in Canada and around
the world, as well as to disseminate information to a diverse community of readers. Such
aims require a wide range of publications, some of which have led to key findings.
Finally, it would be impossible for the journal to have published and functioned over
the past 40 years without the hard work of many people. It is therefore essential to thank
all the directors (Gilles Pronovost, Max D’Amours and André Thibault) and coordinators
(Blanche Ruest and Tammy Davis) of the journal since 1978. It is also vital to thank all
the authors and evaluators of the journal, because without them, the journal would never
have survived for so long. Please enjoy this issue in the anticipation of another 40 years
of publications from Loisir et Société/Society and Leisure.

De son côté, Spirou (‘Social forces and the evolution of tourism: A
