The instruction for density determination on disturbed samples is usually a requirement of the

Engineer based on a procedure or method (specified or not specified) for estimated values unlike
the more accurate determinations from undisturbed samples or compacted samples guided by
test standards.

The BS1377: 1990 clauses are clear on natural density determinations per se and compacted
disturbed samples to specific or specified values.

But for disturbed samples in a natural condition, a practical procedure (not compacted but
close to natural density) could be followed in technique accordingly in BS1377: 1990, Part 2,
clause 4.3.3.3 under placement of test specimen for liquid limit determination-cone penetrometer
method.

The procedure is as follows:

1) Push a portion of the disturbed soil into the cup (or mould) of known volume, with a palette
knife, taking care not to trap air.
2) Strike off access soil with the straightedge to give a smooth level cup surface or mould surface.
3) Weigh the soil mass for an estimated density determination.
