Apart from the visible condition of the belt, which is explained fully in the General Instructions/Toothed Timing Belts section,
there are several other factors which must be considered when checking a timing belt:
Peugeot recommend:
205/309:
Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years under normal conditions.
Replacement every 60,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions.
306/605:
07/98:
Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years under normal conditions.
Replacement every 60,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions.
08/98 :
Replacement every 80,000 miles or 5 years under normal conditions.
Replacement every 48,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions.
405:
Replacement every 72,000 miles or 5 years under normal conditions.
1,6 06/94: Replacement every 48,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions.
1,6 07/94 /1,8/1,9/2,0: Replacement every 60,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions.
406/806/Partner:
07/98:
Replacement every 72,000 miles or 10 years under normal conditions.
Replacement every 60,000 miles or 5 years under adverse conditions.

The previous use and service history of the vehicle must always be taken into account.
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston
damage in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur.
A compression check of all cylinders should be performed before removing the cylinder head.

Installation
1. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley and timing pin [6] & [2] .
2. Ensure timing pin located correctly in camshaft sprocket [3] .
3. Remove:
Crankshaft pulley [6] .
Timing pin [2] .
NOTE: Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. Observe direction of rotation marks on belt. Ensure marks on belt

aligned with marks on sprockets [9] .
5. Slacken tensioner bolt [8] .
6. Turn tensioner anti-clockwise. Lightly tighten bolt.
7. Attach tension gauge to belt at .
8. Turn tensioner anti-clockwise until tension gauge indicates 30±2 SEEM units. Use 8 mm spanner.
NOTE: 2,0 (XU10J2 - RFW/RFX): Tension belt to 18 SEEM units.
9. Tighten tensioner bolt [8] . Tightening torque: 20 Nm.
10. Remove tension gauge.
11. Remove timing pin from camshaft sprocket [3] .
12. Temporarily fit crankshaft pulley.
13. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.
14. Ensure timing pins can be inserted easily [2] & [3] .
15. Remove timing pins. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.
16. Insert timing pin in camshaft sprocket [3] .
17. Attach tension gauge to belt at .
18. Tension gauge should indicate 44±2 SEEM units.
19. If not: Repeat tensioning procedure.
20. If tension as specified: Remove tension gauge and timing pin [3] .
21. Remove crankshaft pulley [6] .
22. Install:
Flywheel locking tool [4] .
Timing belt covers [7] .
Crankshaft pulley [6] .
23. Coat crankshaft pulley bolt thread with suitable thread locking compound.
24. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt [5] . Tightening torque: B2A: 100 Nm, LFZ/RFW: 120 Nm, LFW/LFX: 130 Nm, other
engines: 110 Nm.
25. Remove flywheel locking tool [4] .
26. Install components in reverse order of removal.
