Comment [9]: How will you control this?

The person who will run. I will make sure to have the same person to run, since every person have
a different heart rate at a certain situation.

4. Materials (Criteria B)

1. One heart oximeter for the runner to put on the index finger of any left or right hand.
2. Prepare one stopwatch to measure the time of running.
3. The runner must have a running shoe on for safety, since this experiment requires a lot of
running for the runner.
4. Bring a writing utensil and a paper, or a computer to record the result of the rise of heart rate.
5. One tapeline to measure 3m of the running length.
6. Prepare a color tape or two cones, or anything so you can recognize the starting point and the
distance you are running.
7. The runner should wear training clothes in order to run without any distractions. (Don’t wear
any uncomfortable clothes).
8. One or two bottle of waters to maintain the runner’s condition, so that the same runner can
run in a constant speed the whole time.

5. Apparatus (Criteria B)

6. Investigation Methodology / Procedure (Criteria B)

Admin 12/10/17 5:15 PM
Comment [10]: Excellent procedure.
1. The runner should put on the heart oximeter on the index finger of any hands.

2. Click the button that’s on the heart oximeter and wait for it to measure the runner’s heart
rate.

3
2017 - 2018 Grade 9 Student
3. When the two number shows on the bottom and the top, just ignore the bottom number and
measure with the top number, which is the heart rate number of the runner.

4. Before the runner begins to shuttle run 3m back and forth, the measurer should prepare the
stopwatch and set it to 8 seconds, since the first independent variable of the time will be 8
seconds for the runner to run for.
Admin 12/18/17 2:27 PM
Comment [11]: First change to the IV
clearly explained.
5. Now when the timer is ready, the measurer should ask if the runner is ready. If the runner is
ready the measurer should say ‘start’ and start the timer.
Admin 12/10/17 5:13 PM
Comment [12]: Good idea.
6. As soon as the measurer shouts out ‘start’, the runner should check the starting heart rate,
and shout it out to the measurer; start running at the same time.

7. After 8 seconds, the measurer should shout out ‘stop’ to the runner, and check the heart rate.
There is a caution that the heart oximeter might load a bit to measure the heart rate of the
runner, therefore, the measurer should wait and check the heart rate. Also, the measurer
should record the heart rate number that showed on the heart oximeter for the longest time.

8. Measurer should compare the starting heart rate and the heart rate after running for 8
seconds, and calculate the rise of heart rate. Then, the result should be recorded on the table of
the first try on the section where it says 8 seconds.

9. When the first run had finished, the runner should take a break for a while, in order to settle
down the heart rate to the number that the runner first started off with. The heart rate doesn’t
have to be an exact same number with the first heart rate, but it needs to come around in the Admin 12/10/17 5:13 PM
same area of number. Comment [13]: Well done.
Admin 12/10/17 5:14 PM
10. The measurer now needs to set the stopwatch to 20 seconds and wait for the runner to get Comment [14]: Should be the same.

ready.

11. When the runner’s heart rate has come to a similar heart rate with the first starting heart
rate, the runner needs to tell the measurer the present heart rate and start running. As soon as
the measurer hears the present heart rate of the runner, the measurer needs to start the timer.

12. After 20 seconds of running, the measurer needs to stop the runner and check the heart rate,
and record the increased amount of heart rate from the second starting heart rate on the table
where it says first try/ 20 seconds.

13. Runner takes a break until the heart rate comes close with the previous starting heart rate.

14. The measurer should set the timer to 50 seconds and wait for the runner’s signal.

15. When the heart rate of the runner comes quite close to the previous starting heart rate, the
runner should shout out the number and start running. The measurer should start the timer as Admin 12/18/17 2:28 PM
Comment [15]: Should be the same as
soon she/he hears the number. resting heart rate.

16. After 50 seconds of running, the measurer should stop the runner and check the heart rate,
and record the rise of heart rate compared with third the starting heart rate on the table where
it says first try/ 50 seconds.

4
2017 - 2018 Grade 9 Student
17. Now the runner and the measurer need to repeat the whole process 2 more times, in order to
provide a reliable result.

18. After doing the whole experiment, the measurer should average the rise of the heart rate for
each time where the runner stopped at.

Example).

8 seconds of running

First try: The heart rate increased by 30

Second try: The heart rate increased by 40
Third try: The heart rate increased by 50

∴ 𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑠 40 𝑏𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑠.

19. This is the end of the experiment.

Admin 12/10/17 5:15 PM
Comment [16]: This is unnecessary,
should go in the Criteria C data table.
