1.1 An employee works in a plant with a FAR of 4. If this employee works a 4-hr shift, 200
days per year , what is the expected deaths per person per year?
Answer :
FAR
4 hour 200 shifts 4 deaths
Deaths per person per year =( )( ) (108 hours)
shift year

= 3,2 x 10-5 deaths/ person-year

1.2 Three process units are in plant. The units have FARs of 0.5 , 0.3, and 1.0, respectively.
a. What the overall FAR for the plant, assuming worker exposure to all three units
simultaneously?
b. Assume now that the unit are FAR enough apart that an accident in one would not
affect the workes in another. If a worker spends 20% of his time in process area 1,40%
in process area 2, and 40% in process area 3, what is his overall FAR?
Answer :

a. Overall FARs
= ∑FARs
= 0,5 + 0,3 +1,0
=1,8
b. Area 1: 20% → FAR = 0,5
Area 2: 40% → FAR= 0,3
Area 3: 40% → FAR= 1,0

Overall FAR = (20%)(0,5) + (40%)(0,3) + (40%)(1,0)

= (0,2)(0,5) + (0,4)(0,3) + (0,4)(0,1)

= 0,1+ 0,12 +0,4

= 0,62

1.3 Assuming that a car travels at an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how many miles must
be driven before fatality is expected?
Answer :
57 deaths
Pada table 1-4 FAR car =
108 exposed hours
108
At au 1 death per = 1,75 × 106 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
57
50 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
(1,75 × 106 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠) ( ) = 87,5 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟

1.5 A plant employes 1500 full-time workes in a process with a FAR of 5. How many
industrial related deaths are expected each year?
Answer :
2000 hours
Total working hours per year = (1500 workers) ( )
workes

= 3 × 106 hours
5 deaths
Deaths per year = (3 × 106 hours) (108 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠)

= (3 × 106 )(5 × 10−8 ) deaths

= 15× 10−2 𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑠
= 0,15 deaths
1.9 A university has 1200 full-time employess. In a particular year this university hasd 38
reportable lost-time injuries with a resulting 274 lost workdays. Compute the OSHA
incidence rate based on injuries and lost workdays.

Answer :

2000 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
- Total hours worked = (1,200 𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑦𝑒𝑠𝑠) ( 𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑦𝑒𝑠𝑠 )

= 24 × 105 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

38 𝑖𝑛𝑗𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠
- OSHA injury rate = × 200.000 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
24×105 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
= 3,17 injuries

274 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠

- OSHA lost workdays = × 200.000 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
24×105 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠

= 22,8 lost workdays
