ELA Standards:
● RL.5.1: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and
when drawing inferences from the text.
● RL.5.3: Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or
drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
● RL.5.7: Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone,
mood, or appeal of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale,
myth, poem).
● RL.5.10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories,
dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band
independently and proficiently. Activate prior knowledge and draw on previous
experiences in order to make text-to-self or text-to-text connections and comparisons.
ELP Standards:
● 4-5.1: An English Language Learner can . . . construct meaning from oral presentations
and literary and informational text through grade appropriate listening, reading, and
viewing.
○ By the end of Level 3, an English Language Learner can use a developing set of
strategies to: determine the main idea or theme, retell a few key details, and
retell familiar stories from read-alouds, simple written texts, and oral
presentations.
Materials:
● Ivy + Bean
● Pencil
● Section 3 Comprehension Questions
● Section 4 Comprehension Questions (for end)
● White Board
● White Board Marker
Procedure:
● Start with intro questions:
○ What is a summary?
■ A short description of the beginning, middle, and end of a passage or
novel. -- write this on small white board
○ Who wants to give me a summary of this section of the book?
○ What was your favorite part of this section of the story?
○ If you were Nancy, how would you feel about having Bean for a sister?
● Go to student comprehension packet for Pages 68-93.
○ Q1: What was in the box that Ivy pulled out from under the bed? (A: a spell book)
○ Q5: What happened when the girls went to Mrs. Trantz’s yard? (A: Mrs. Trantz
caught them)
■ Follow up: How do you feel about Mrs. Trantz’s reaction? Is she mean,
upset, etc.?
○ Q9: Why was Nancy crying? (A: Her mother wouldn’t let her get her ears pierced)
■ Follow up: Discuss a time in your life when you were upset because
someone wouldn’t let you do something you wanted to do.
● Give students vocabulary chart for pages 68-93. Go over each word one at a time.
○ Ask students to write their guess for each word, then go over the true definition.
Have them draw something that helps them remember the word.
● Give students next week’s questions and go over tricky vocab they may encounter.
