Another interesting — and significant — insight deducted from brain imaging is that the map of activity
changes as a person learns. Recent research has shown that novices and experts use very different sets of
modules to perform the same task. For example, when professional piano players and non-musicians
perform the same finger tapping task, the distribution of activity in their brains is quite different (Hund-
Georgiadis & von Cramon, 1999). Both the intensity of brain activation and the set of modules engaged may
vary according to the degree of experience with a learning task (Shaywitz, 2003).
UDL - Guidelines for Providing Multiple Means of Representation
Guideline 2: Provide options for language and symbols
Students vary in their facility with different forms of representation – both linguistic and nonlinguistic.
Vocabulary that may sharpen and clarify concepts for one student may be opaque and foreign to another. A
graph that illustrates the relationship between two variables may be informative to one student and
inaccessible or puzzling to another. A picture or image that carries meaning for some students may carry very
different meanings for students from differing cultural or familiar backgrounds. As a result, inequalities arise
when information is presented to all students through a single form of representation. An important
instructional strategy is to ensure that alternative representations are provided not only for accessibility, but
for clarity and comprehensibility across all students as well.
Strategic networks.
The strategic networks are areas of the brain that underlie our ability to plan, execute, and monitor skills and
actions. They include those areas often referred to as “executive functioning.” The anterior part of the brain
(the frontal lobes) primarily comprises the networks responsible for knowing how to do things, such as
holding a pencil, riding a bicycle, speaking, reading a book, planning a trip, or writing a narrative. Actions,
skills, and plans are highly patterned activities, requiring the frontal brain systems to generate such patterns.
Working in concert with posterior recognition systems, frontal systems allow us to learn to read actively, to
write, to solve problems, as well as to plan, execute, and complete compositions and projects. These frontal
systems are also critical for learning how to act on information. In reading, for example, one has to know how
to look for patterns: how to look at the critical features of letters, how to “sound out” an unfamiliar word, how
to look for the antecedent of a pronoun, and how to look for an author’s point of view.
