Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the differences between the English ability and mathematical ability
of the Grade 2 Students in Pudoc East Elementary School .
Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the students in of:
a. Sex
b. Age
2. What is the level of students in terms of English vocabulary?
3. What is the level of students in terms of understanding English texts?
4. What is the level of students in terms of solving addition/subtraction problems?
5. What is the level of students in terms of solving multiplication problems?
6. Which subject do they find easier to follow?
7. Which of the two subjects did they excelled more?
8. Is there a significant difference between the English ability and mathematical ability of the
Grade 2 Students in Pudoc East Elementary School ?

Methodology

A quantitative approach was applied in this study because the aim of the researcher
is to investigate and determine the statistical difference among two variables. This research study
used a descriptive research design to determine the significant difference between the English
ability and mathematical ability of the Grade 2 Students in Pudoc East Elementary School of .S.Y
2018-2019. Random sampling was used to determine the sample population. The respondents of
this research will be the Grade 2 students of Pudoc East Elementary of S.Y 2018-2019. Male and
female students will be considered. 38 Grade 2 students participated in the study. The sample
size from the whole grade level will be enough to permit statistical analysis of the data and at the
same time small enough to be practical for data collection. This study gathered data through
worksheets that was validated by the teachers in Saint Augustine’s School Tagudin, Ilocos Sur.
The researchers asked permission from the advisers of Grade 2 students of Pudoc East
Elementary School ,the researchers personally administer the distribution of instrument and
data gathering.
All of the information that was collected from the worksheets was typed
into a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel. The researchers used a statistical tool to analyze and tally the
data that will be gathered from the Grade 2 students of Pudoc East Elementary School. Data
containing the profile of the students was initially tabulated for frequency distribution. T-test was
used to see if the difference among the variables are significant. A significance level of 0.05 will be
used. The t-test for dependent variables was used to summarize the results. The data will also be
summarized in pie charts to show percentages and number of respondents that answer such
questions.
Results and Discussion

Table 1 presents that the majority of the respondents were females with a higher percentage of
58% compared with males that is only composed of 42%.

Table 2 presents that majority of the students present during our CIP activity are 8 years old which
is the usual age for grade 2 students. While 26% of the students were 7 years old and the 9 years
old students were 10% of the class and on the other hand, the 6 years old and 10 years old of the
class were only 3% each.

Conclusion
After analyzing the data , the researchers figured out that most of the students of Grade 2
students in the Pudoc East Elementary School excels more in math subject than the English subject.
The researchers also observed that the students are having a hard time in reading English texts when
they tried to do a reading session with them plus they have a lot of unfamiliar English words from
the worksheets so as a result, they do not know what to answer in most of the items in the activity.
While they are answering the worksheets ,the researchers were also assisting them in answering and
the students had a hard time in understanding what the researchers are explaining in English subject
that the researchers are almost telling them the answers because they are not really getting the topic
that they are explaining to them and on the other hand, the math subject is much easier for them to
understand because one example in each activity is already enough for them to answer the next items
alone. In general, the researchers can say that the Grade 2 students of Pudoc East Elementary School
needs more focus in learning English than math because the researchers learned that they find math
easier to do and understand in fact, they excel more in math than English.

Recommendations

After the researchers conducted this research, they would like to recommend the teachers of
Grade 2 teachers in the Pudoc East Elementary School that they should give more attention and focus
in teaching their students the English Subject including vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms,
homophones and pronouncing English words. Teachers should teach every Grade 2 students equally
in the subject that they are having a hard time in understanding and learning especially the English
subject knowing that Pudoc is somewhat isolated in the real world and being left behind in terms of
educational advancements. It is in the hands of the teachers in Pudoc East Elementary School to shape
and nurture their students’ future. Since English is a powerful tool in going along with the world it is
a must that students should learn English very well. To the future researchers, you can add more
subjects that are using English language to measure their English ability even better. You can also
add more worksheets to make your data even more reliable.
Scope and Delimitation
The study is limited mainly to determine the English ability and the mathematical ability of
the Grade 2 students of Pudoc East Elementary School. It also aims to determine if there is a
significant difference between the English ability and the mathematical ability of the Grade 2
students.
The respondents of this research are the Grade 2 students of School Year 2018-2019. This
study was conducted at Pudoc East Elementary School, Pudoc East , Tagudin, Ilocos Sur. Worksheets
were distributed to the Grade 2 students of at Pudoc East Elementary School, Pudoc East , Tagudin,
Ilocos Sur .

Significance of the Study

Our study will benefit the following:
Grade 2 Students of Pudoc East Elementary School, they will be given more attention
especially the English subject since they have a hard time in learning and understanding that area
knowing that English could be a great contributor of their success in the near future.
Teachers of Pudoc East Elemtary School, they will be more informed of what subjects needs
more improvement and focus so that they can give the students the best quality of education that
they can give.
DepEd Ilocos Sur, they will have the information of how is the status of education in isolated
areas and they would know how can they possibly help these schools in delivering the quality
education that all students deserve.
Parents and Guardians, they will know how and what to assess in their children’s school
performance. They could also possibly help the teachers in nurturing their children in different
subject areas especially the English subject at their own homes.
