Stress

One day, a man went to meet a doctor. He said he is depressed. He said life seems harsh
and cruel. And he is alone. Doctor said the treatment is simple. The great clown Alan is in
town tonight. Go and see him, you will find your happiness. Man burst into tears: But doctor. I
am Alan.

Good evening to all my beloved toastmaster club members. As you can see from the slide, I
am going to share with you guys about stress. Before that, let me tell you two real story that
have happened around us recently. So let us start with the first one. A female students from a
college commited suscide in a morning. She left a note for her mother. Based on the content
of the note, she appeared to be depressed, mentioned that the pressure from life and studies
was to much for her to handle. This had made her lost hope in her life, so she killed herself by
jumping off from her condominium. For the second one, a guy who was also a college student,
killed himself with a stolen gun. The student locked himself in a toilet and took his own life. His
father told the police that his son had been suffering from depression for over a year.

In my grandmother era, I seldom heard about such kind of things from happening. Even if it
did, it only implicates businessman who was facing financial problem or someone who have
just broke up with their another half. But nowadays, we can see that such incident have
become more prevalent than before. Even a primary school student would have suscide
thoughts when they get stressed. Actually I am quite puzzle over where did they get the idea
that they can kill themself when things goes wrong. As we can see, the situation is deteriorating.
I believe it is quite impossible for us to find someone who never undergoes stress
circumstances. Everyone get stressed, but some people seem more susceptible to pressures
getting on top of them. We can see that the ability of human to cope with stress have become
more worrying for the time being. Stress alone doesn’t make it an big issue, but intense stress
will cause depression whereby the suscide thought come across our mind. Stress, if it is in
small amount, is actually good. Doctors defines stress as your body’s responses to mental or
emotional pressure. Stress helps our ancient ancestors to run fast if they were being chased
by a wild animal.

I have browsed through internet and found some interesting information on how to cope with
stress. So the first one is “take control”. Perceiving that we have control over what might
happen is a very important way for us to be able to deal with demanding situation. For example,
people often go into job interviews thinking they don’t know what they are going to be asked
and of course, what they are going to say. Instead, you should ask yourself, what can I control
here. Focus on very simple things you can control like how you walk into the room and so on.
It is about focusing on what you can achieve rather than what you might go wrong. For the
second one, you can get yourself a dog. Dogs are great motivators for going outside and
getting some exercise. It also can act as your companion when you are alone. Nowadays,
many people don’t get married, instead, they get themselves a dog to accompany them. Of
course, it is better to get hitched as engaging with other people, especially your loved ones,
buffers stress. Walk in the woods also help you to cope with stress. Even if you live in the city,
just getting out and do some jogging can help. Lastly, play video games could also help reduce
stress. But of course, it is not good if you were indulged in it. Anyways, moderation is the best.

These are some of the ways that could help you beat stress. Of course, they are still many
other ways that could help you as well. I believe all of you know that one size doesn’t fits all,
so you have to choose the best ways that suit you if you want to beat stress. Thank you.
