BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal): Geometry Pre-AP Blended Pilot Program Learners will design a home and
calculate the amount and cost of materials needed.

Foundational Knowledge: Magazine Scavenger Hunt: Learners Exit Ticket/Quick Check

will “build a home” using pages from (Formative Assessment)
Learners will identify different 3-D home design magazines. They will list
solids and surfaces that make up out the different surfaces found in a Summative Assessment (Unit Test,
the surfaces of a home and apply home and which materials would be involving a writing question)
appropriate formulas to calculate used to cover the surface. Learners
surface areas of a variety of 3-D will identify which 3-D solids (prisms,
solids and composite figures. cylinders, spheres/hemispheres,
cones, and pyramids) create these
surfaces.

Hands-on inquiry/discovery
activity: Class periods will meet formally
face-to-face during designated class
period. Working in groups, students will
be given a rectangular prism (Kleenex,
cereal box) and a ruler. They will be asked
to calculate how much wrapping paper
will be necessary to cover the prism in its
entirety. Students will discover the surface
area formula through this process. Then, in
order to discover the process for finding
the surface area of a composite figure, two
boxes will be stacked on top of each other.
Students will compare the amount of
wrapping paper that would be necessary
to cover the two “packages” individually
versus the amount of paint that would be
necessary to cover the composite solid. A
class discussion will follow.
