TOTAL COMMITMENT WITHOUT

DISTRACTION OR COMPROMISE

With Jesus, righteousness no longer consists in observance of an external

legal code. Rather, Jesus defines righteousness as an apprenticeship to
Himself as Master Teacher through the Holy Spirit. By the world’s
standards, following Jesus is a very costly proposition, because this Person
who is Righteousness requires our complete loyalty – total commitment
without distraction or compromise. What does Christian discipleship
entail?

To be Christian disciples involves putting aside all personal ambition in

favor of God’s roles for our lives. To be Christian disciples means that all of
our relationships will be tested to prove that following Jesus is our highest
priority (Luke 9:57-62; see also Matt. 8:18-22).

Luke 9:57-62
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to
Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have

nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
59

But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and

preach the kingdom of God.”

61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and

bid them farewell who are at my house.”

62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and

looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Jesus requires a loyalty to Himself greater than loyalty to any other human
being. Personal discipleship and commitment to Jesus can result in division
and rejection from those we love, even from our own family members (Luke
12:51-53; see also Matt. 10:34-36).

Luke 12:51-53

Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at
51

all, but rather division. 52 For from now on five in one house will be divided:
three against two, and two against three. 53 Father will be divided against
son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against
mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law
against her mother-in-law.”

To be Christian disciples means being wary of legalistic religion (religion

strictly by the rules), because it is at odds with the loving “life” quality of the
kingdom of God. We must trust that Jesus will give us the wisdom and
words to overcome even such opposition as this (Matt. 10: 17-20 NKJV).

Matthew 10:17-20
17But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge
you in their synagogues. 18 You will be brought before governors and kings
for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they
deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it
will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you
who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT (QUESTION OF THE DAY)

WHAT IS YOUR ASKING PRICE FOR YOUR SOUL?

Jesus Christ challenged His followers by asking them, “What profit is it to a

man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?” People
sell their souls for money, fame, power, position, and pleasure. They may
not always do it consciously; but they turn away from God in order to
pursue things and they are seduced by things like money and power. In the
end, what good is it if you make millions, climb to the top, and line in the
fast lane if you don’t know God?
