PEOPLE AT RISK: need yearly screening


w Diabetes
Stage 1
w High blood pressure
Normal kidney function w Heart and blood vessel disease
with risk factors w Family history of kidney disease
(measured by GFR*, w Immune disorders such as lupus
blood & urine tests) w Heavy use of pain medication

Stage 2 STAGES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Declining GFR to w Follow a healthy lifestyle:
60ml/min/1.73m2 • Healthy eating
(mild kidney damage)

• Be physically active
• Stop smoking

Stage 3
w Take medications as prescribed
GFR: 30 – 60 ml/
min/1.73m2 w Aim for a healthy weight
(moderate kidney w Avoid anti-inflammatory pain medications e.g. ibuprofen,
damage) naproxen, high-dose ASA (more than 325 mg per day)
w Maintain good blood pressure (less then 130/80)

Stage 4 w If you have diabetes maintain good blood sugar *A1c less
GFR below 30 ml/ then 7% (blood test done at a lab)
