Topic: 1. Introduction of Research
1.1 Definition, Purpose, Characteristics,
Differences, Kinds & Classifications of Research,
Qualities of Good Research

Researcher: Shiela A. Catalan

Professor: Dr. Celia E. Cariño

Date: First Semester Year 2018 – 2019

I. Introduction
In this chapter, the concepts on Methodology of Research will be
discussed. From its definition to the different kinds and
classifications of research and its use. The characteristics or
qualities of a good research will also be enumerated and elaborated.

II. Objective
By the of the lesson, learners will:
1. Define the concepts used in Methodology of Research.
2. Enumerate and explain the different kinds and classification
of research.
3. Explain the different characteristics or qualities of a good
research.

III. Content
RESEARCH
- The systematic investigation into the study of materials and
sources in order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions.
- Research Methodology is the systematic, theoretical analysis
of the methods applied to a field of study. It comprises the
theoretical analysis of the body of the methods and
principles associated with a branch of knowledge.

Specific Purposes and Goals of Research

1. To discover new facts about known phenomena.
2. To find answers to problems which are only partially solved
by existing methods and information.
3. To improve existing techniques and develop new instrument.
4. Discover pathways of action of known substances or elements.
5. To satisfy researcher’s curiosity.
6. To expand or verify existing knowledge.
7. To improve man with more of the basic needs-more and better
food, clothing, shelter, etc.
8. To promote health and prolong life.
9. To make work , travel, and communication faster, easier and
more comfortable.

Characteristics of a Good Research

1. Systematic
2. Controlled
3. Empirical
4. Analytic
5. Objective, unbiased, logical
6. Employs quantitative or statistical methods
7. Patient and unhurried activity
8. Requires effort – making capacity
9. Requires courage

Kinds and Classifications of Research

There are many kinds of research which are classified according
to their distinctive features. Some of the classifications are as
follows:

1. According to purpose – There are three broadly different kinds of

research, namely, predictive, directive and illuminative.

 Predictive or prognostic research has the purpose of determining

the future operation of the variables under investigation with the aim
of controlling or redirecting such for the better. “Predictive
research proposes to give the result from one specific educational
practice or pattern and seeks to establish a close statistical
connection between characteristics of students and a prediction of
educational outcome.”
 Directive research determines what should be done based on the
findings. This is to remedy an unsatisfactory condition if there is
any.
 Illuminative research is concerned with the components of the
variable being investigated, as for example, “interaction of the
components of educational systems and aims to show the connection
among, for example, student characteristics, organizational patterns
and policies, and educational consequences.”

2. According to goal – According to goal, research may be classified

as basic or pure research and applied research.

 Basic or pure research is done for the development of theories

or principles. It is conducted for the intellectual pleasure of
learning. Much of this kind of research has been done in psychology
and sociology.
 Applied research is the application of the results of pure
research. This is testing the efficacy of theories and principles. For
instance, a principle says that praise reinforces learning. To
determine if this is true, one results of the study. Inferential
statistics such as correlatives, chi-square, analysis if variance,
etc. are used to test the hypothesis. This type of research usually
includes comparison studies, cause-and-effect relationships, etc.
 Non-quantitative research. This is the research in which the use
of quantity or statistics is practically all. This is especially true
in anthropological studies where description is usually used.
Descriptive data are gathered rather than quantitative data.

3. According to time element – According to time element, best

classifies research as historical, descriptive and experimental.

 Historical research describes what was.

 Descriptive research describes what is.
 Experimental research describes what will be.

IV. Evaluation
1. What is the meaning of Research?
2. What are the goals and purpose of research?
3. What are the different kinds and classifications of research?
