TIMING BELT APPLICATION REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Part No. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate
1.6L 4-Cyl. camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine

1974-78 ..................................................... 2.4 Hours ... ..... T020 Removal – 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system
124 and remove upper radiator hose. Remove upper section of air duct.
1974-78 ..................................................... 1.9 Hours ... ..... T020 Remove spark plugs. Rotate crankshaft until marks on both camshaft
131 sprockets are aligned with fixed pointer on front of engine. See Fig. 1
1975-78 ..................................................... 1.9 Hours ... ..... T020
or 2. Number 4 piston should now be at TDC firing position. Place

– With Air Conditioning, add .2 hours. transmission in 4th gear and apply parking brake to prevent crankshaft
from turning.
NOTE: For information about tensioners and/or pulleys (when
available), see ALPHABETICAL MODEL LISTING. CAUTION: Do not turn crankshaft or camshafts independent of
each other, as valves may hit pistons.

MANUFACTURER’S SUGGESTED NOTE: Any time tension is relieved from timing belt, timing belt
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE must be replaced.
The manufacturer recommends that belt be replaced every 25,000 miles
or 24 months (1974-77 models) or every 25,000 miles (1978 models).

2) Remove lower engine protection plate. Remove all drive belts. TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Disconnect coolant extension union at cylinder head. Loosen timing belt
idler pulley nut and mounting bracket bolt, and release timing belt TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
tension. On 1.6L engines before No. 42577, pry pulley to release Application Ft. Lbs. (N.m)
tension. Tighten pulley nut and bracket bolt, and remove belt. Camshaft Sprocket Bolt .......................................................................................... 87 (118)
Installation – 1) Install timing belt, making sure not to move sprockets. Tensioner Nut ............................................................................................................ 33 (45)
Ensure hole in auxiliary shaft pulley is lined up with tensioner pulley bolt.
2) To adjust timing belt tension, loosen idler pulley tensioner nut and
allow pulley to tension timing belt. Rotate crankshaft pulley 2 full turns
and recheck timing marks. Tighten tensioner nut and bracket bolt. Adjust
drive belts to proper tension.
