10
things you must know about
the program for the
2017-2018 school year

1.- What is Construye T?

Construye T is a program from the Ministry of Public Education (SEP, by its acronym in Spanish),
in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The program is aimed
at high school students and its main purpose is to improve school climate and to promote the
social and emotional learning (SEL) of youngsters, to enhance their present and future wellbeing,
so that they can deal with their academic and personal challenges successfully.

2.- What are socio-emotional skills and why is their

development important?

They are tools that allow people to understand and regulate

their emotions, to feel and show empathy towards others, to
establish and develop positive relationships, to make responsi-
ble decisions, and to set and achieve personal goals.

There is evidence that SEL contributes to:

• Achieve better academic performance

• Generate a positive school climate

• Accomplish successful career paths

• Prevent risky situations in youngsters: teenage pregnancy, school dropout, substance

abuse, violence, among others.
3.- What skills does the program Construye T
promote?
Construye T promotes 6 skills organized in three dimensions:

Allow the individual to know

and trust him/herself, as
well as his/her ability to

goals.

4.- Construye T and the New Educational Model

For the first time in Mexico, socio-emotional
learning (SEL) has been incorporated as a
core dimension of the national mandatory
curriculum.

In the New Educational Model, “socio-emotio-

nal skills and life project” are included as an
essential component of the high school
graduate profile.

To this extent, Construye T has been redesig-

ned to offer the necessary pedagogical tools
that will allow professors to implement the
program in schools.
5.- Evaluation of the program Construye T’s
processes (2016)
In 2016, there was an evaluation of Construye T with principals, tutors and teachers. Results
produced the following concerns:
• There is not enough staff qualified in SEL in schools.
• Some materials provoke emotional breakdowns in students that
teachers feel incapable of containing.
• Activities are perceived as an imposition and not as tools that can help
improve school climate.
• Some activities took longer than specified in the program’s index cards.

6.- Construye T: then and now

Construye T has been aligned with the proposals of the New Educational Model, and has been
improved based on the feedback obtained through the program’s evaluation.

7.- What is NOT Construye T?
• A program that addresses problems of violence, bullying, substance abuse, unwanted pregnancy,
or school dropout. It is, first and foremost, a prevention program.

• A program for emotional catharsis, because the purpose of the tasks is to develop socio-emotio
nal skills in the school setting.

8.- How will Construye T work in your school?

Throughout the semester, each teacher will deliver
12 lessons on socio-emotional skills,
in 20-minute sessions, and as part of his/her class.

9.- What tools or training will Construye T provide to

implement the program in schools during the
2017-2018 school year?
Construye T will provide the following resources:

On-site and on-line training

• On-site and on-line training for Construye T’s tutors and

principals, which will acquaint them with the new approach
to implement the program at school and classroom levels.

• On-line training for all high school teachers, which

will give them the tools to implement Construye T
in their classrooms.

• Remote accompaniment for Construye T’s tutors and

principals.

Materials

• Lesson manuals for teachers to develop socio-emotional

skills in class.

• Short video lessons that will provide general information

about specific socio-emotional skills.
