Macro Feedback

Design and layout

The overall design of the book is presentable and printing is in legible text. However, the lessons need to
be reviewed in the light of target audience. The design needs to be revised to support fitness for
purpose.

As a textbook

If the purpose of these lessons is to be used by the students then either it is a text book wherein the
intention is not to write anything in the text book. In this case, the explanation part needs to be
expanded for the ensuring independent learning of the learners/students. Initial explanation section is
only for the first exercise. The subsequent exercises are not supported with explanation.

As a Workbook

If the book needs to be used as a workbook alongside the text book, then the space for working should
be increased allowing learners/students to write answers in the given spaces. Spaces shall also be well
defined with text boxes or lines for writing to ensure neatness as it would help students revisit the
concept in a much organized manner. More sums may need to be added to support practice.

As a Teacher Guide

If these lessons are to be used as teachers guide for conducting lesson, yet it does not contain enough
information or strategy for teachers to conduct the lesson. It may require the set objective/s,
methodology, time, resources, assessment criteria etc.

All in one

If the purpose of the lesson is to serve as all in one then all above mention factors to be brought under
consideration. Although, textbook and workbook can be combined but teacher guide may confuse the
learners/students as they are not the audience for that content.

Serious business layout

The layout of the text is too serious and business type model. When catering to learners/ students of the
21st century the model can be somewhat user friendly and added with some fun element to promote
interaction of learners/ students with the text.

Concept

Models

Model that’s used for solving sum is much feasible for students to adopt

Breaking concepts into smaller units

If the aim of the organization is to break instructions or concepts into smaller units for students ease,
then the design of the lesson may not serve the purpose as too many concepts are cluttered onto one
page and not enough practice is provided to assist developing comfort level of students on one concept
before moving on to the next.

Topic

Topic needs to be aligned with the content as Basic operations are the four operations as plus, minus,
multiply and divide, whereas, the content was all about fractions and decimals.

Explanation Section

The explanation can be expanded as providing more of visual aid making connections with the real
world may enable students to apply the concepts. It eventually should aim at bringing students from
abstract to reality. The essence of real life application of concept is missing in its real context. Word
problem emphasizes on application part but as its solving a sum time students focus may be more
towards solving the sum than applying the concept.

Word Problems

Word problems are in local context which is much applicable for students. They can relate with it,
however it can also be about things that they come across in their daily routine which matters most to
them like gaming, TV programs etc. Also, considering the fact that students may not have the level of
language proficiency that’s required to interpret word problem, either concept of mapping the word
problem to interpret it shall be introduced or the language should further be simplified for students to
interpret independently.

Tricks and games

Mathematics can be real fun if learners/students are provided with tricks and games which they can play
with the given concepts. There can be a section where the students may be provided ways of verifying
their answers. For e.g. giving concept in base ten block model and asking them to verify answers by
lining decimals and adding them up. It’s the same layout as used in the lessons but writing it as a trick
may motivate students to make connections. This will help develop patterns of learning in
learners/students.

Food for thought section for teachers

It basically mentions lesson objective which again may assist teacher to align her instructions. However,
these objectives shall align with Blooms Taxonomy. Using words like’ understanding’ which in terms of
objectives is not measurable and in a long run may mislead teacher.
