Lesson: The Ascension of Jesus Christ

Objectives:
Through the account of the Ascension of Jesus, we want the children to learn that we have a
most perfect intercessor to the Father in Heaven (i.e. Jesus), that Jesus sends us his Spirit, and that he
gives us the hope of one day reaching the place he has prepared for us.

Lesson Proper
 Ask the children: Was there a time when you have to be separated from a loved one or a friend
for a very long time? How did the separation make you feel? What could be the reasons you had
to be separated? What gives you a certain hope that everything is for the greater good?
 Our story today is about Jesus’ ascension to heaven. It is when he left the world in order to
intercede for us to the Father in heaven and send us his Spirit to help us in our journey on earth.
 Read the story of Ascension. In the middle, ask the children: What do you think the apostles felt
when they saw Jesus leaving them? Do you think they were happy? Or sad? Why is it so?
(Ans: They were probably sad for a moment because Jesus, whom they love very much, will not
be physically present among them. But afterwards, they were much happier because Jesus
assured them that he will send them the Spirit who will help them, as promised by the Father.)
 Discuss the moral lessons from the story:
 Despite the obstacles we may find in our way, we can put all our hope in the word of
Christ because he is always faithful in keeping his words and his promises.
 We must not be sad instead, we must be filled with hope because Jesus is interceding
for us to the Father in heaven
 We must be filled with hope that one day, we too are going to reach heaven, where
Jesus is.
 Our Lord will come again and he will judge the living and the dead. But we never know
when so we should be on the watch, and be of service to God and to others.
 Suggested activities:
 Connect the numbers (see attached file)
 Pinoy henyo

THE ASCENSION
(Luke 24)

For forty days after Jesus resurrected, Jesus appeared many times to his disciples. They know knew that
Jesus had come back to life. But now it was time for him to leave them. So, Jesus led his friends to the
Mount of Olives.

“Soon,” he said, “God will send you his Holy Spirit. You will be given the power to tell the peoples of the
world what I have done and what I will do for them.”

As he finished speaking, Jesus was taken up to heaven and a cloud hid him from their view.

Then, two men appeared, all in white. “Jesus has gone to heaven,” they said. “He will return one day in
the same way you saw him leave.”
