Abstract
Carbon fibre is a fibrous carbon material having a micro graphite crystal structure made by carbonization
of either PAN or pitch. Carbon fibres are inert, medically safe, chemically stable, low in density and their
strength-to-density ratio is one of the highest among all fibre types. It has a very high tensile strength and
young’s modulus. Carbon fibers, particularly those with polymeric matrices, have become the dominant
advanced composite materials for aerospace, auto-mobile, sporting goods and other applications.
Carbon fibres are favored hugely for reinforcing concrete structures for its strength and pliability. It saves
raw materials, prevents rusting, and provides longer lifespan. They facilitate the cathodic protection of
steel reinforcement but are much less effective for radio wave reflection. Due to electrical conductivity of
carbon fibres, the addition of carbon fibres to cement significantly increase.CFRC is dominantly used to
increase load capacity of old structures (such as bridges) by wrapping PAN based carbon fabrics or fibres
around the sections to be wrapped. Also randomly oriented pitch based carbon fibres are added to the
cement mixture in volume fraction of <0.1.Recently, efforts are made to use short pitch-based fibres for
concrete. CRFC is being used to develop smart heating floors and lightweight concrete shells.
