ES 13 Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

Problem Set 3

Instructions: Write your answers and all relevant calculations on yellow pad papers. Outline
your solutions as complete and neat as possible.

Combined Loadings

1. The beveled gear is subjected to the loads shown. Determine the stress components
acting on the shaft at point B and show the results on a plane element (stress plane)
located at this point. The shaft has a diameter of 25 mm. Prepare the load effects table
(ATFV table).

2. A square pipe is used to support an eccentric load as shown. The material properties
of the material is provided in the table below. Determine the maximum 𝜽 such that the
shaft will not fail due to the stresses arising from the application of the eccentric load.

3. For a stress plane, 𝑃1, with the following stress components

𝜎𝑥 = +50 𝑀𝑃𝑎
{ 𝜎𝑦 = +10 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝜏𝑥𝑦 = −45 𝑀𝑃𝑎

a. Draw the Mohr’s Circle and identify what case considering the principal stresses.
b. Determine the state of stress of the element rotated 35° 𝐶𝐶𝑊 from the given stress
plane.
c. Compare the results from (b) using equilibrium method.
d. Find the local (in-plane) maximum shear stress and the absolute maximum shear
stress.
e. Determine if there are orientations where the shear stresses are zero.

Theories of Failure

4. For a given pipe applied with 62.5-𝑁𝑚 torque on both ends as shown. If the strength
√3
of the pipe material is 𝜎𝑦𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 = 𝑀𝑃𝑎, determine the required minimum diameter for
𝜋
the member not to fail under the Maximum Distortion Energy Criterion.
