Are we there yet?

By Alison Lester
GARDNER'S MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
Proposed by Howard Gardner

Gardner rejected the idea that intelligence is dominated by

one single, general ability

Gardner proposed that instead, there are eight types of

human intelligence, each representing different ways of

processing information
BENEFITS OF GARDNER'S MULTIPLE
INTELLIGENCES
Increases accessibility of learning experiences for all students

Providing students with various ways to demonstrate

knowledge and skills increases engagement and learning

Allows teachers to develop a more accurate understanding of

students' knowledge and skills

Students are able to demonstrate and share their strengths,

motivating students and leading to higher self-esteem

Teaching for understanding allows students to encounter more

positive learning experiences

THE 8 INTELLIGENCES...
1. Verbal/Linguistic

2. Visual/Spatial

3. Logical/Mathematical

4. Bodily/Kinaesthetic

5. Musical

6. Intrapersonal

7. Interpersonal

8. Naturalistic
THE 8 INTELLIGENCES EXPLAINED
Verbal/Linguistic:
The capacity to use words effectively e.g. debating, reading aloud

Visual/Spatial:
The ability to perceive the visual/spatial world accurately e.g. mind mapping,

diagrams

Logical/Mathematical:
The ability to think logically, detect patterns and reason deductively e.g. problem

solving, code making

Bodily/Kinaesthetic:
Proficiency in using one's whole body to express ideas and/or feelings e.g. dance,

hands-on activities
THE 8 INTELLIGENCES EXPLAINED
Musical:
The ability to think in patterns, rhythms and sounds e.g. singing, humming

Interpersonal:
The capacity to understand, communicate and interact well with others e.g.

interviewing, collaborating

Intrapersonal:
The capacity to become aware of one's own emotions, feelings and motivations e.g.

journaling, independent studies

Naturalistic:
Those who have a sensitivity to and appreciation for nature e.g. gardening, outdoor

exploration

1. Choose your favourite place visited by Gracie and her family and write a

diary entry from that day from one of the other characters (Mum, Dad, Luke

or Billy) point of view (ACELY1675)

2. Plan and deliver a short presentation about reasons to visit Australia using

some form of presentation software (PowerPoint, Canva, Prezi etc.)

 (ACELY1677)

3. Create your own word search using key words or locations from the text

and swap your word search with another student to solve (ACELA1484)

4. In partners, debate over reasons why you should or should not visit
Australia, providing a minimum of five points for your argument
(ACELA1477)
ACTIVITIES

Logical/Mathematical
1. Create a timeline of the places visited by Gracie and her family throughout the
text. Then, using the provided map, plot their journey (WAHASS34)

2. Using a blank jigsaw template, recreate your favourite landscape from the text, cut

the pieces out and swap with another student to solve (ACAVAM111)

3. In Tasmania, it rained so much that Gracie and her family had to stay inside playing

Monopoly. Create your own board game with a partner that you would play with your

family or friends on a rainy day  (WATPPS16)

4. Research Aboriginal rock carvings or art and identify parts of symmetry in these.

Draw the symmetrical shapes you can see in the paintings (ACMMG066)
ACTIVITIES

Visual/Spatial
1. Using Google Earth, identify Australian states, territories and capital cities, as
well as all the landmarks the family travelled to and plot them on the provided
map (ACHASSK066)

2. In the text, Gracie and her family come across many different animals. Choose an

animal from the book and act it out to a partner while they guess which animal it was.

Take turns doing so  (ACADRM032)

3. Draw a cartoon of two of the characters from the book. Use speech bubbles to

illustrate their speech. Then act this out with a partner (ACADRM031)

group. Use phrases and lines from the book and invent some of your own

(ACADRM032)
