Material Finer Than 75 Micron

Aim:- Determination of material finer than 75 micron

Apparatus :-

a) Balance : 5 kg capacity weighing balance (Least count of 0.5 g)

b) Sieve : 1.18 & 75 micron IS sieves
c) Container : A Pan or vessel of a size sufficient to contain the sample covered with water and permit
of vigorous agitation
d) Oven : Capable of maintaining uniform temperature of 110° C +/- 5° C

Procedure :-

a) The test sample conforming to the approximate minimum requirements given by IS shall be
dried to constant weight (B) at temperature of 110 +/- 5° C. The sample is kept in a ventilated
oven for 18 to 20 hours & weighed to the nearest 0.1 percent of test sample. The sample is kept
again in the oven for 2 hours to check constant weight up to 2 g.
b) After drying & weighing . the sample shall be placed in the container & sufficient water is added
to cover it. The contain of the container shall be agented vigorously.
c) The contents shall be sufficiently agitated to result in complete separation of all particle finer
than 75 micron from the coarse particles & bring the fine material in to suspension.
d) Care should be taken to avoid as much as possible, the decantation of the coarse particles of the
sample. The operation shall be repeated until the wash water is clear.
e) The wash water containing the suspended and dissolved solids shall be immediately poured
over the nested sieve arranged with the course sieve on the top
f) All material retained on the nested sieves shall be returned to the washed sample. The washed
aggregate shall be dried to constant weight ( C ) at a temperature not exceeding 110° C. The
sample is kept in a ventilated oven for 18 hrs weighed to the nearest 0.1 percent of test sample.
The sample is kept again in the oven for 2 hours to check constant weight up to 2 g.

Calculation :-

Material finer than 75 micron = (B-C)/B X100
