COUNTABLE  &  UNCOUNTABLE  NOUNS  II  


 
DETERMINERS  
 
Determiners  are  words  that  modify  the  nouns  they  go  with,  so  we  are  going  to  distinguish  between  
those  that  go  with  countable  and  uncountable  nouns.  
 
With  countable  nouns  (singular  or  plural):  
 
1. a  /  an  +  sing.:  A  beautiful  woman.  An  honest  man.  
2. the  +  sing.  /  pl.:  The  dog  is  hungry.  The  students  were  very  hard-­‐working.  
3. some  +  sing.  /  pl.  (in  affirmative  sentences)  :  There  is  some  person  at  the  door.  There  are  some  
apples  in  the  fridge.  
4. any  +  sing.  /  pl.  (in  negative  or  interrogative  sentences):  There  isn’t  any  reason  to  stay  here.  
Are  there  any  students  in  the  library?  
5. a  lot  of  +  pl.  (in  affirmative  sentences):  A  lot  of  friends  came  to  the  party.  
6. many  +  pl.  (in  negative  and  interrogative  sentences):  There  weren’t  many  students  in  the  
library.  Have  you  got  many  exercises  to  do?  
7. how  many  +  pl.(only  in  questions):  How  many  brothers  or  sisters  have  you  got?  
 
With  uncountable  nouns  (only  singular):    
 
1. the:  I  need  the  sugar  to  make  the  cake.  
2. some:  (affirmative  sentences  and  questions)  There  is  some  water  on  the  floor.  Would  you  like  
some  tea?  
3. any:  (negative  and  interrogative  sentences)There  isn’t  any  money  left.  Do  you  have  any  olive  
oil?  
4. a  lot  of:  (affirmative  sentences)  They  ate  a  lot  of  chocolate.    
5. much:  (negative  and  interrogative  sentences)  There  isn’t  much  homework  to  do.  Were  there  
much  furniture  in  the  house  you  bought?  
6. how  much:  (only  in  questions)  How  much  cheese  would  you  like?
