This is a pic of our first R.A.T. Seminar Last Year, We had a good turn. All had fun and
we learned a lot those two days of training. Some of you have asked what is R.A.T..
So I will answer that question R.A.T. is Military technology fighting technique. It is
design to help you understanding the phases of the fight. Most people enter into a fight
with no plan. They just fight until someone runs away, wins, or drops. That's leaving too
much up to chance. If you go into a fight with a set plan (entry, pressure, termination)
your chances of success goes up greatly. R.A.T. is all OFFENSIVE NOT DEFENSIVE.
Its is design to KICKBUTT and TAKE NAMES, names are optional. The founder of the
R.A.T. is my Sifu Paul Vunak it is the CORE of D.G.C.F.S.. So I hope you like and I
hope to see you in the seminar.

Organic Vitamins For Healthy Living

As some of you know Mr.Traylor and I have been trying to get back into Healthy Living
which is NOT A DIET but a life style change. I read this article and I thought you might
enjoy it. People need vitamins for healthy living and for proper functioning of their body
parts. The need for vitamins differs from each other depending on certain things such as
type of work, age, environmental stress load, genetics, and lifestyle. The vitamins can
be obtained from the natural foods as well as from the supplements. The organic
vitamins are the best for long-lasting effect and healthy living. Most of the vitamin
supplements are produced from chemicals. The chemicals used are made to mimic the
natural properties of vitamins in the natural foods, but as they are synthetic, they do not
yield perfect result for the body. The vitamin that is got from the natural food is the
perfect one for everyone and they are exactly what everyone needs. Also, natural foods

enhance the vitamin level in the blood and they also support good health. Therefore, it is
highly recommended to get vitamins from the organically grown foods than the

Mrs.Traylor Combat Fitnes 2 then vitamin supplements are highly recommended. Organic vitamin supplements are

Airsoft Products 4 considered better over synthetic as they do not contain any kind of fillers, additives, and

harmful for many people. For example, some people are very allergic to food
Weapon disarms & retention 10 dyes.Because organic vitamins are made from natural substances, they contain pure

Fake Instructors 14
Mission Centric Training 15 vitamins prevent the body from being exposed to various kinds of diseases and also
So You Want To Be a Champion 17 cure the body from the existing diseases. Studies show that organic vitamins preserve
the nature energy in the body and make people more active and keep people more
energized throughout the day. Non-organic also provide essential nutrients, but the
method used for making this vitamin is not natural and hence the body will not be able to get the full vitamins and nutrients
from these synthetic supplements. The unused parts of the synthetic vitamin go wasted and because of this organic whole
food vitamins are highly recommended. The organic vitamins can be easily chosen by carefully looking at the label pasted on
it. The ingredients listed on the organic materials should not contain any kind of filler substances. In addition to the organic
vitamin, it is better to take natural food items to have a balanced diet. Today, there are special organic vitamins that aim at
particular parts of the body such as joints or particular muscles and these types are useful for many sport activities.Organic
vitamins help in faster recovery and provide higher energy required for the body. Organic vitamin is suitable for weight control
and organic multivitamin provides several types of benefits for the body. With many choices available in the market, it makes
easier for anyone to get more healthy and fresh by just consuming the organic vitamins regularly.

Failed Times Square Bomber Warns:
'Brace Yourself' For Attacks
You know we are all really worried about our economy and now we have to worry about
home Invasion and Home grown terrorism. I have been receiving tons of phone calls
about specialized training for first responders. This is a sad state of affairs…. This world is
getting so dangerous. Here is an article I read I hope you like it.

Kaczynski and shoe bomber Richard Reid. The roughly 500 inmates there, considered the
most dangerous in the federal prison system, spend 22 hours a day inside their cells.
Shahzad is currently held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan.
“Happy with deal God' gave him”
The convict was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and nervously tapped his fingers on
the defense table before rising to address Manhattan Federal Judge Miriam Cedarbaum.
Shahzad - who pleaded guilty to 10 federal crimes - offered no regrets. "I'm happy with the
deal that God has given me," he said. The sentencing came just five months after
Shahzad parked an explosives-laden Nissan Pathfinder SUV on W. 45th St. in the Theater
District - and tried to detonate the crude bomb. Prosecutors said Shahzad was already
plotting a second attack before launching the first. He was instead arrested two days later
at Kennedy Airport while sitting aboard a plane bound for Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
"The sentence imposed today means Shahzad will never pose that threat again," said
Janice Fedarcyk, head of the New York FBI office. Shahzad was trained and funded by Tehrik-e-Taliban, a militant group
known in his homeland as the Pakistani Taliban. Three Pakistani men were later arrested on charges they arranged to make
introductions for Shahzad to Taliban leaders.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the bombing bid illustrates the daily difficulties faced by local law enforcement. "He
said that was his intention when he went to Times Square - to kill and injure as many people as possible," Kelly said. "It gives
you a little insight into what we're up against," he said. "We're doing more than any other city in the world, quite frankly. But
there's no guarantees." MAY GOD HELP THE U.S.A.

SNEAKY DRINKING TRICKS

First and foremost, people don't realize that what they drink is the first step in losing
weight. In fact, most people don't know that when they feel hungry, they may actually be
dehydrated and they are really thirsty, not hungry. Water is your best friend. 70% of your
body weight is nothing but water. This is also why water plays an important role in weight
control. So…
TRICK #1: Drink ice water. Yes, you know that you need to drink about 8
glasses of water per day for your body to burn fat and flush toxins out of your system. But
a study from Germany revealed that ice water is more rapidly absorbed by the body and
increases your metabolic rate by as much as 30% for 2-3 hours. Have a large glass of ice
Mr. Morales water as soon as you get out of bed in the morning and it will fight your body‟s dehydrated
Owner Fit2fight Fitness Coach state from the last 6-8 hours and jolt your metabolism out of its slumber to get a fat-
kickboxing, M.M.A. conditioning,
Realistic street defense dissolving start on your day!
Strength training, weight loss TRICK # 2: Drink hot cocoa. If you have a chocolate weakness, this will not only help
you survive…but burn more fat in the process. Buy some
Inside D.G.C.F.S. unsweetened cocoa powder (not the packaged hot chocolate garbage) and
R.A.T. & D.D.R.A.T.S. Seminar 1
look for their recipe on the back to make their version of cocoa. Use nonfat

healthy antioxidants.
Terrorism in America 7
Sneak drink tricks 8
Weapon disarms & retention 10TRICK #3: Make your own soda pop. Soda is the absolute worst thing you can put in
Pressure Testing paper tiger 12your body…PERIOD! All sodas are sweetened with lots of sugar, in fact, the worst kind of
Welcome 13
sugar…high fructose corn syrup. The more you can cut out of your diet the better. Also,
Fake Instructors 14
Mission Centric Training 15diet soda is still soda. It may not have as much sugar, but it has other chemicals and
So You Want To Be a Champion 17components that are not good for your body either. If you‟re one of the bazillion soda-
addicts out there, make your own instead by combining a small amount of fresh 100%
juice with a little bit of club soda or mineral water.
TRICK #4: Replace fruit juice with fruit. Fruit juice isn't as healthy as most people think
it is. Juice actually has a lot of sugar in it as well. If you are craving a glass of juice, drink
fresh fruit juice out of a juicer or better yet, just eat the same kind of fruit instead. Like
orange juice? You‟ll find a fresh orange even more satisfying believe it or not. Plus, fresh
fruit provides your body with much needed fiber as well as better assimilation of vitamins
and minerals.
TRICK #5: Drink your coffee. Not many people know that coffee actually
provides more antioxidants to the American diet than any other food or
beverage. That doesn‟t mean you should hook up an intravenous drip of
caffeine throughout the day (you shouldn‟t have any more than 500 milligrams a day) but
just know that coffee in moderation not only provides a pick-me-up, but is also helping you
to burn more fat and increase your lifespan. For best results without the added calories,
drink it black. But here are some other coffee tricks to help you lose more weight…
TRICK #6: The healthy hot mochacino. If you‟re one of those sweet coffee drinkers and
your forwarding address is the corner Starbucks, you should know that you‟re getting over 600 calories in that Venti White
Chocolate Mocha. That‟s like eating two big pieces of chocolate cake!
Instead, brew your own black coffee and add unsweetened vanilla soy milk,
and a scoop of either vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder to it and blend it gently in a blender. Microwave it back up to
steaming and you‟ll get all the taste of the expensive fattening commercial brand with a shot of muscle feeding, fat-burning
protein. Plus, the coffee and cocoa tag team for a powerful boost of healthy antioxidants.
TRICK #7: The healthy frappuccino. Again, the goal isn‟t to load up on
caffeine throughout the day but different people drink at different times of the day and are drawn to different types of coffee
drinks. One other popular brand is the iced, blended frappuccino that‟s like a coffee shake only again…loaded with the worst
kind of calories. As an alternative, spoon sugar-free, nonfat vanilla yogurt in an ice cube tray and freeze it into cubes
overnight. Then add them to a blender with a splash of fat-free milk or unsweetened vanilla soy milk, a teaspoon of instant
coffee crystals, and a scoop of vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder. This will taste so good that you‟ll swear it isn‟t good
for you but it is! If you want to cut down on the caffeine, just use decaffeinated instant coffee instead.
Page 8

TRICK #8: Drink a cup of coffee before exercising. If you‟re a caffeinated coffee drinker, the short burst of energy you
receive will help you get motivated for your exercise session, decrease your feeling of fatigue during your workout (so you can
workout longer and easier), and is mildly thermogenic to help you burn more fat.
TRICK #9: Drink green tea. Green tea has been used as a medicine in China for over 4,000 years. It aids the digestive
system and can help ease an overly full stomach and it has been linked to a reduction in cancer risk. But for weight loss, the
main ingredient in green tea, EGCG, maintains high nor epinephrine levels in your body to keep your metabolism revved up.
One study published in the Journal of Nutrition even reported that subjects who drank green tea during their workouts lost
significantly more belly fat than those who didn‟t. The health and weight loss benefits of drinking green tea are enormous and
if you‟re looking for optimum health and a body to die for, drink green tea throughout the day.
TRICK #10: If you drink alcohol, opt for dry red wine. Dry red wine is better than your sweet wines, because sweet wines
have more sugar! Dry wines have sugar, but most of it has been fermented away into alcohol and from a weight gaining
perspective, dry is better. Plus, dry red wines contain certain antioxidants that are beneficial to your health. My
recommendation is a California Pinot Noir. Not a wine drinker? Then…
TRICK # 11: Drink beer. I know that the words “beer” and “belly” don‟t exactly make a great combination but animal studies
have shown that the bitter compounds from the hops in beer have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body and may help you
lose more fat. The key is to not have more than one bottle per day for this to work and dark beers will contain more of the
active compounds you‟re looking for. And no...having all 7 beers on Saturday is not the same thing. In fact…
TRICK #12: Avoid late night social drinking. After a few drinks, most
people get the munchies and when you're feeling a little inebriated and hungry you won't be able to make rational decisions
regarding your diet.
Unfortunately this usually happens at night and your body hates it when you overeat at night because your metabolism slows
way down while you sleep and it will store all those extra calories around your waist as body fat .

Weapon Disarms and Weapon Retention

When presented with a situation where you are confronted with an armed attacker, your
most important task is control of the weapon and neutralization of that particular threat.
Whether it be a gun, knife, stick or other weapon you must first and foremost get out of the
line of danger. Knowing and understanding the nomenclature of different types of
weapons will allow you to make correct split second decisions when faced with an armed
attacker. Having an understanding that every weapon has a primary as well as a
secondary threat is needed so that you can have a solid base of fundamental knowledge;
as to fully gauge your options of what will and will not work. Any firearm presents the
obvious primary threat of the spent round being propelled through the barrel of that
weapon and expelled from the muzzle. You obviously do not want to be shot, or grazed by
a spent round. But what about secondary threats from a firearm! The weapon can be used
Mr. D'Antonio for a “pistol whip” in the case of a handgun or a “butt stroke” in the case of long or rifle
C.U.T.S. Founder & Matser Chief style weapons. But that is not all there is to the secondary threat. What many people do
Instructor
not foresee when teaching weapon (gun) disarms is the probability and very real likelihood
Inside D.G.C.F.S. that the weapon will discharge! There are several threats besides being shot that are
R.A.T. & D.D.R.A.T.S. Seminar 1 clear and present during the discharge of any weapon when you are attempting a disarm,
Mrs.Traylor Combat Fitnes 2 and not knowing about them until it happens can be very unsettling as well as place you in
Coming Events 3 a state of shock. Let‟s start by understanding that on many handguns, you will find an
Airsoft Products 4
Dark Gift Combat DVD’s 5 exposed hammer and or a recoiling slide or a cylinder that houses the rounds. In your
Crime rate in your Hood 6 attempt to disarm your attacker, you can get pinched quite severely in those moving parts.
Terrorism in America 7 The shock and pain, if you are not ready for it, is enough to send most people into a
Sneak drink tricks 8 mental “lock”. Another secondary threat we do not think about is muzzle blast and burn.
Weapon disarms & retention 10
Pressure Testing paper tiger 12 When you are grabbing onto a weapon that is being discharged at a place where the
Welcome 13 weapon is not meant to be held, you can and will get burned and it will hurt! We can also
Fake Instructors 14 be deafened by the sudden “pop” of the round being spent. Being that close to the
Mission Centric Training 15 business end of a firing weapon will cause a sudden, disorienting temporary loss of
So You Want To Be a Champion 17
hearing followed by a loud ringing in the ears. This, again, can be very unsettling for
someone unprepared for such an occurrence.Knife disarming is another strange animal
because we generally view the knife as a slicing or stabbing weapon, and therefore train
to combat those primary threats. However there are very clear and present secondary
threats to consider. In addition to WHAT the secondary threats are, we need to know
HOW those secondary threats can be used. Let us break down the entire structure of a
knife. These are:

1: blade/sharp edge 2: tip 3: handle 4: butt or pommel

5: spine of the blade 6: sides of the blade or surface of the knife

Keeping the above in mind and knowing what we do so far about reality based combat we
can more closely explore the secondary threats of a knife and just how they can be used.
The handle can be used to trap the fingers and hands for controls and locks. The pommel
can be easily utilized as a bludgeoning tool or to dig into nerves and muscles as well as grind into bone to cause extreme
pain. The spine of the blade is useful in locking techniques as well in addition to its capabilities as leverage tool used to pull an
attacker into a desired direction or to strike into surface areas of the skin where bone is most prominently exposed. The flat
surface area of the knife, again, can be used for locking and trapping. A very unorthodox and unique method of using the knife
is what I call the „Italian bitch slap” which is where you literally use the surface of the blade to slap the face (aim for the jaw or
just under the eye socket). This same principle can be used against the metacarpals and other bony areas as well. Knife
disarms are a dangerous beast if you do not understand the proper mechanics of how a disarm works, especially if the blade
is wielded in skilled hands! Let me start with there is no such thing on the street as a “frozen arm” one thrust attack. When
someone confronts you with a bladed weapon, their intent is going to be on repeatedly cutting or stabbing you with the
ultimate goal of killing you. A very particular set of actions must occur in order for your attacker to cut or stab you more than
once, and that is they have to extend their arm in order to launch their initial attack, then in order for them to repeat the action
of stabbing or slashing they will have to retract their arm so as to chamber for the next stab or slash, this is the principle of
retraction. As your attacker slashes or stabs, you must move first off of the attack and then swiftly move in deep into the
position where they will have to retract the blade for the follow up slash or stab. This is how you will enter into your assailants‟
inside space and thus control any subsequent attack, neutralizing the threat. Now that we have a foundation of understanding
in primary and secondary threats presented by two very distinct weapons, and we have touched on the workings of knife
combat we can explore the concepts and principles of weapon disarming methods and weapon retention of the handgun.

Page 10
Weapon disarms are not meant to be fancy or flashy. As a matter of fact, the more aesthetically unappealing, the better the
technique will work. Fancy and flashy will only cause you to fumble through a mess of unneeded movements that take too
long and will cause your technique to fail. We now understand the various threats presented with a hand gun. With this
knowledge we can effectively apply simple principles to allow us to survive the threat from a encounter with a gun wielding
assailant and safely relieve him of his weapon. The first most important concept to employ when looking down the business
end of a handgun is a fourfold process.

1: move offline from the barrel 2: control the weapon 3: redirect the weapon 4: take the weapon

These four principles must be completed in this sequence and in precise/rapid succession. How and where to move offline of
the barrel is very important. Mistakes made when doing this will be fatal, thus there is a zero margin for error. Side to side
movement, while turning, makes for the most tactically sound movement and will absolutely work best. Avoid turning in
towards the center (i.e. in between the arms) of the assailant. Instead you should opt for movement that places you outside of
the attacker. As you move offline of the weapon, immediately grab the barrel of the weapon and push it away from you and
towards the assailant. Grabbing the weapon with both hands you will peel the weapon away from you and towards the
attacker, thus redirecting the barrel at them. This peeling motion literally peels the weapon from their grip. Your final step is to
relieve your attacker of their firearm, this is accomplished with a pulling motion towards you. PEEL AND PULL! Peel the
weapons barrel away from you, pull the weapon towards you. PEEL AND PULL! Create distance; do not stay within the reach
of your assailant once you have relieved him of his weapon. Staying within the reach allows your assailant to grab and hold
onto the weapon, this is where a struggle can ensue. The last thing that you want to do is struggle over a weapon. This leads
me into the next very crucial topic, weapon retention. Whether you are the one who has originally drawn down with your
weapon, or have relieved your assailant of their weapon and have the weapon directed at them, it is vital that you stay in full
control of your weapon. Do not allow your opponent to grab and or take control of your weapon. Proper handling of your
weapon is vital. A firearm is not meant to be placed up under the chin or to the head or body of another person. The firearm is
a weapon of distance. It is with this in mind that once you relieve your assailant of the firearm you need to move out of their
reach and properly drawn down on and possibly shoot your assailant. If when you are drawn down on your assailant, and they
make an attempt to reach for your weapon, you need to react instantly and more importantly, correctly. Leverage is your best
friend when attempting weapon retention. Let me go into some detail on the proper method to retain your firearm, in this case
we will discuss the hand gun. Should your assailant reach or lunge for your weapon, you must step back on your strong side
(the side holding the weapon) and retract your weapon to either the shoulder or to the hip. If by chance your assailant makes
a move for your weapon and is successful and has hold of your handgun, place your left hand onto theirs while maintaining a
firm hold on the grip of your weapon and pull down and away from them in a clean motion. Avoid struggling at all costs! Never
allow the barrel of the weapon to be turned towards you. It is crucial that you maintain your grip on the weapon as well as
keep the barrel pointed away from you (or any other party other than your attacker). Overall you must maintain situational
control & awareness of your surroundings. Control can only be achieved by relieving that attacker of their weapon, if it is in
their grasp make no mistake, THEY ARE STILL IN CONTROL.

Yes! This is going to be one of Those articles. You know I hate to sound like a broken
record. I've been doing various martial arts my entire life and I truly believe in it and that
it can help people. I think martial arts like karate, jujitsu, fma, etc. can change many lives
in a positive way. Please understand before you read on that this is an individual
problem that has nothing to do with any particular art. There's good and bad in
everything like everything else it usually depends on the instructor.
Many years ago these techniques and concepts were used on the battlefield by ancient
warriors. These warriors used this stuff everyday and they knew what they were doing
because of it. If something wasn't working properly then it would be modified because
Paul Green lives would be lost if it wasn't the best that it could be.

know end. You know i saw a book the other day called Weapons of Karate. Talk about
not giving a damn. For those that do not know karate is a word from Okinawa meaning
"empty hand". Weapons that were taught to them was actually a separate art called
Kobudo or Kobu-jutsu. You would think an author would know this...but they don't. It's
honestly gotten that bad. If your an instructor please understand me when i say to you
that in this day and age your responsibility is not to some grandmaster that you may
never meet. Your responsibility is to the people that come to you for help. They put their
blind faith in you and you should strive everyday to make sure that you earned it. Every
technique that you teach should always be tested under stress before you teach it. This
is called pressure testing. Pretty much any technique will work on a compliant person
that is standing still when nothing is on the line. That however isn't gonna be the way it is
if one of your students gets attacked. I think every instructor owes it to their students to
pressure test techniques. When you see a technique you should ask the same questions
of it even if it works. Here are some examples:Did the technique work?
What would make that technique fail or what would the counter be? Is there a different technique that would be higher
percentage? Does this technique require a student to be a certain size or gender? How long would it take a student to
become proficient at this technique? Should it be higher or lower in the overall curriculum based on training time?
What situations or scenarios would this apply? What are the concepts that drive the technique so my students can understand
it better and possibly modify it if need be? These are a few of the questions that you should be asking simply because it
should matter to you. Pressure testing can be done safely! One way to induce the stress is to have a student stand with there
back to the attacker in class and have them turn around and the person attack them as they turn around. Another way is to
use a whistle in class so you have the attacks happen randomly when you blow the whistle and know one gets to know when
it happens. These are just a couple ways to induce real stress in a controlled environment. This will tell you right away if that
technique is gonna work. If it doesn't work then toss it. Let your students know your testing the techniques. At least they know
your not gonna teach some bogus thing on purpose and that your putting them first. I still have students that contact me today
that i taught when they were children just to say how much they've been helped by the training. That means more to me than
anything. I made sure they always knew that their safety came first and that they are what mattered not some outdated logic. I
think as instructors you owe this to your students. Potential students if your going to a dojo to study make sure you ask these
questions so you don't get stuck with a paper tiger just going through the motions. Make sure they pressure test. Sure you
may not be on a battlefield everyday but the world is getting more violent everyday. You don't gamble with your life betting on
someone who is just going through the motions. Make sure they pressure test.

Mission Centric Training

In sports science, the principle of specificity is the concept that, to get better at a sport,
your training should be relevant to that sport to get a positive training effect. Basically,
training to play baseball every day is not going to have a big impact on your basketball
game. This same principle states that you need to transition from generalized training to
highly specific training. After achieving a level of general fitness a baseball pitcher needs
to practice pitching, but a catcher practices catching. In the combative arts, I coined the
term, Mission Centric Training to reflect the same principle of specificity.
A truism that I like is: will never do anything in combat that you haven‟t done in training. I
think it‟s fair to say that when your heart rate gets extremely elevated and your adrenals
have just wired you up like a Christmas tree, you‟re probably not going to sit down and
compose a symphony. The movements that are going to be available to you are gross
movements that you have drilled into muscle memory. You simply must burn in the
movements that are most appropriate for the mission.

things like the end goal, the likely operating environment, and potential obstacles. For
systems including Arnis, Kenpo,

Overall, the combative arts encompass a number of different missions. If you compete in

Mission Centric Training 15 If you want to compete in the next UFC, you‟re probably not going to spend the majority

includes carrying a 70 pound pack and a rifle in an urban environment, and fighting
multiple armed opponents in close quarters, practicing rolling on the mats in an octagon
is going to be counter-productive. Unfortunately, combative training systems get marketed inappropriately all-too frequently
by those who don‟t understand that things don‟t translate well across missions.
There is nothing wrong with training for sport. There is nothing wrong with training for combat. There is nothing wrong with
training for physical fitness or for any other reason. The very important thing is to understand the difference. Personally I
opted out of combative sport a long time ago. I realized that the sports I participated in were building habits in me that would
get me killed in a real self-defense situation. I‟ve seen a lot of stick fighting tournaments where armored opponents clash head
on and just beat each-other over the head, ignoring blows that would be lethal from their opponent. The techniques of boxing
are great, but put a knife in the hand of an opponent and blocking that jab doesn‟t make sense. Wrestling, point fighting, and
MMA focus on the mission of the game in their environment, under a set of rules. They should not be confused with self
defense.
Page 15

What Are The Rules?

An important set of obstacles to consider when training or teaching are rules. For the most part, everyone has a set of rules or
laws they must follow. In all jurisdictions, laws govern the use of force for self-defense. Police forces have additional use of
force policies. The military has rules of engagement. Combative athletes have the rules of the game. I often here the phrase,
“it‟s better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.” I agree that, if my life is on the line, I wouldn‟t hesitate to use lethal force to
stop an opponent. However I don‟t relish the thought of spending the rest of my life avoiding prison shower rape because I
ripped the throat out of a guy who shoved me in a bar. If everything you practice is lethal, you don‟t have any other options.
The Civilian Mission
As a civilian with a job that doesn‟t involve daily combat, my #1 mission is survival. I focus my training so that I could survive a
potentially lethal assault by one or more possibly armed individuals and get back to my family. You‟ll notice that I didn‟t state
that my mission was to win fights, or beat up bad guys. I‟m not interested in fighting. Fighting is sport.
By focusing on survival, my choice of tactics might include running, screaming, the use of weapons, avoidance, whatever. In
the end, self-defense for me can be summed up in a single word: escape. My end goal is to remove myself from an unsafe
situation and get to safety. I have a range of tools or options I can use, and some of them involve hurting my opponent, but
some of them do not.
A woman came to one of my self-defense seminars a few years ago and told me she was scared because her husband, a
high ranking black-belt in Tae Kwon Do, would always look to pick a fight with someone when they went out. This person
obviously has a deep psychological problem that may wind him in jail, or get he or his wife killed some day.
How Should I Train?
To keep this article from just being academic claptrap, let‟s use it to inform our training:
1. Understand Your Mission
Be honest and determine the goal of your training, the environments you‟re likely to use your training in, your likely
obstacles, and any parameters or rules you must follow.

2. Move from generalized to specific training

You have to get some basics down first. Physical fitness is also helpful. Then it‟s time to get specific with your training.
If you are training for sport – get your mat-time in. If for self-defense, practice that. If you are going to carry and use a
pistol for self defense – practice with the exact model you‟ll be carrying.

3. Don’t forget environment and obstacles

Train in your street clothes outdoors sometimes. Train in low-light. Train using training partners as stand-ins for family
members you might have to protect. Add noise, furniture, multiple opponents who may or may not be armed. Train in
a closet or other phone booth-sized space.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A CHAMPION

I can‟t tell you how many times people have come up to me over the years asking me to
train them up to be a world champion martial artist. You know the ones I‟m speaking
about. They sit at home watching martial arts movies, and day dream of becoming the
best in the world. Yet when it comes to having to get up off of that couch and actually

THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE

wasn‟t convenient sometimes, but when I tried to make excuses my coach wouldn‟t hear
it. In fact he reamed me but good, then reminded me of the greatness he saw in me. I
wanted to be a world champion and the only way to do it….. was to do it. Your biggest
opponent will always be yourself, and that is the one you have to keep in line. Daily. Every time you need to go to class and
train.
WHAT IS REALLY IN YOU?
Training brings out the best, and worst in all of us. You will know what is inside of you when you start pressing and
challenging yourself, and what is important, is how you deal with it and what you do with it. No one can force you to do
anything you don‟t want to do. Be honest with yourself here; you are the one who made the choice to train, and it is you who
can keep you going or hold you back. Do you have the courage inside you that it takes to push yourself to your mental and
physical limits? Do you have the ability to maintain balance and excellence in your personal and business life while you
achieve your personal goals? The only one who can answer that is you.
A TRUE CHAMPION
You may not be a world champion, but you can certainly achieve the discipline and training of one. And you can also gain the
heart and soul of a champion. Being the best at what you do combined with honor and integrity is a true champion. If your
goal is to be a champion in the martial arts, then by all means go for it with everything inside you. But remember this, it takes
commitment, discipline mentally and physically, and patience. Great things don‟t happen overnight, but if you are consistent,
and keep doing what you need to, you will benefit from your labors.
STEPS
Write down your short term and long term goals, then write down all of the steps it will take you to get there. As you
accomplish them, you can check them off to look at your progress. Be patient with yourself, and with others. If your goal is to
be a martial arts fighter, I would encourage you to become a martial artist first, then go on from there. Find a good school that
is interested in helping you achieve your goals. Meat market dojo‟s can be discouraging and not beneficial to bringing out
what is waiting to be cultivated in you. Then train, train, train!!!! Good luck to you! Namaste
