Liz Spetz On Leadership and Living

297-8804
When great leaders retire they either write their memoirs or they give speeches. Sometimes
they have valuable experience to share. I recently came across comments on leadership by
607 Railway Street retired four star general Colin Powell and found much of what he had to say to be true and
useful:
• Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off. Ironically, by procrastinating on
the difficult choices, by trying not to get anyone mad, and by treating everyone equally
"nicely" regardless of their contributions, you'll simply ensure that the only people you'll
wind up angering are the most creative and productive people in the organization.
• Don't be buffaloed by experts and elites. Experts often possess more data than judgment.
Elites can become so inbred that they produce haemophiliacs who bleed to death as soon
as they are nicked by the real world. Policies that emanate from ivory towers often have
an adverse impact on the people out in the field who are fighting the wars or bringing in

the revenues. Real leaders are vigilant and combative in the face of these trends.
www.REALTOR.ca • You don't know what you can get away with until you try. So the moral is, don't ask. I'm
serious. "If I haven't explicitly been told 'yes,' I can't do it," then believe that "If I haven't
explicitly been told 'no,' I can." There's a world of difference between these two points of
view.
• Fit no stereotypes. Don't chase the latest fads or those that make everyone else the most
comfortable. The situation dictates which approach best accomplishes the team's mis-
sion. Leaders honour their core values, but they are flexible in how they execute them.

Managing Your Money

Uncover Hidden Investment Money

Facing what seems to be a never-ending flow of day-to-day living expenses, it can appear
difficult to set aside money for investing. But you know you should—’paying yourself first’
by contributing regularly to your RRSP eligible investments and other investments is the
best way to achieve your retirement and long term financial goals.
To help you do the right financial thing, here are three do’s and don’ts for uncovering hid-
den money you already have that you can use to regularly fund your investments.
Do consolidate debt. Gather up your small loans and credit card debt and combine them in
