DESCRIPTION OF NEW New Bongaigaon is a city in the Indian state of Assam. The
BONGAIGAON : City included or new part of municipal board of Bongaigaon
District. The town, divided into two parts – Old Bongaigaon and
New Bongaigaon, is situated 180 kilometers (112 mi) north
west of Guwahati. To meet the demands of Bodos of Assam,
Bongaigaon was divided to give way for Chirang district.
Bongaigaon has a major petrochemical industry, the Indian Oil
Corporation Limited(IOCL BGR).
The town occupied a place in the map of Indian Railway with
the establishment of the railway station in the year 1908. Most
of the institutions like ITI, Bongaigaon College, Office of
the Assam State Electricity Board, in the early 60’s and in fact
the very base of the development of the town was laid in this
decade only. The development further gained momentum with
the establishment of the Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemi-
cals Limited (BRPL) Complex in the year 1972
at Dhaligaon and also Thermal Power Plant at Salakati.
Though these area are not within the limit of Bongaigaon Mu-
nicipality the town also caters to the demand of this population.
The Bongaigaon Town Committee was first constituted in the
year 1961 and was upgraded to a Municipal Board in the year
1977. Presently the Municipal Area consists of 25 nos. of
wards covering an area of 14.31 sq m.
New Bongaigaon falls under the Northeast Frontier Rail-
way zone of the Indian Railways. There are two stations in
Bongaigaon - New Bongaigaon railway station (2nd largest
railway junction of Assam state) with a population around
1,74,160.
It is situated 36 m above mean sea level with average annual
temperature around 26 Co , climate condition in new bongaiga-
on is semi arid with annual precipitation around 1717 millimeter
It is situated near banks of Manas & Champabati river
(Tributary of the Brahmputra river)
New Bongaigaon Falls under earthquake zone V according to
IS 1893(part 1) : 2016.

OBSERVATION DURING During drilling we found that strata is normally consolidate,

DRILLING : which confirms the SPT results.
We also observe some tree roots at a depth of 15 m while
taking SPT at that depth.(BH-03)(Photograph is attached in
annexure).
Water table and fine content of the soil gives and idea that it’s
a deposited material due to weathering of rock or transported
due to floods.

FIELD INVESTIGATION :
6 No. of 150 mm. dia bores were drilled down up to the depth
FIELD BORING & SAMPLING :
of 15.00 mt. at proposed site of construction by our skilled and
experienced site personnel by using percussion drilling in Feb-
ruary 2018 as suggested by client.

TEST PROCEDURES FOR FIELD TESTS :

The standard penetration tests were carried out by split spoon

STANDARD PENETRATION TEST :
sampler confirming to IS 2131-1981. The split spoon sampler
assembly is divided in three parts. One is cutting shoe of 38
mm inside dia and 51 mm out side diameter with 75 mm
length. The second is split body of same diameter and 508 mm
in length. The third is driving head with ball of same dia meters
and 180 mm in length. The drive weight assembly consist of
63.5 kg. weight hammer and 750 mm free fall guide rod.

Before conducting the Standard Penetration Test we had

cleaned the bore by shell then lowered the S.P.T. sampler with
'A' rod and conducted the Standard Penetration Test in accord-
ance with IS 2131-1981.

The undisturbed soil samples were collected in thin walled

UNDISTURBED SAMPLE :
sampling tubes. The thin wall sampling tubes confirming to IS
2132-1981 consist of cutting shoe sampling tube and driving
head with ball.

The tests were conducted in accordance with IS 2132- 1981.

Disturbed samples were collected during boring and from the

DISTURBED SAMPLES :
split spoon sampler.

The samples recovered were labeled and sent to Laboratory

for testing.

The borehole was terminated when adequate depth of drilling

was completed in consultation with the Site-in-charge as per
technical specification.
4

The following laboratory tests were carried out on disturb and

LABORATORY TESTING :
undisturbed samples.

1) Grain Size Analysis

DISTURBED SAMPLE/SPT SAMPLE:
2) Atterberg Limit

UNDISTURBED SAMPLE : 1) Grain Size Analysis

2) Atterberg Limit

and 11196-1985 respectively. We have carry out the Test
by using both equipments with respect to the soil behav-
iour and as per the IS- 2720 ( Part-V)-1991.

3) Specific Gravity : The specific gravity of the soil samples

were carried out in accordance with IS-2720 (Part- 3/Sec-

RECOMMENDATIONS & : 1) Water table was encountered in all of the boreholes during
the investigation in February 2018.
CONCLUSIONS
2) We have determined Safe Bearing Capacity as mentioned
below for the proposed structure. Suitable values may be
used for design purpose.
3) We have determine the liquefaction potential as soil is
fine sand and mixture of silt with presence of ground water
table.
