DESCRIPTION OF NEW New Bongaigaon is a city in the Indian state of Assam. The
BONGAIGAON : City included or new part of municipal board of Bongaigaon
District. The town, divided into two parts – Old Bongaigaon and
New Bongaigaon, is situated 180 kilometers (112 mi) north
west of Guwahati. To meet the demands of Bodos of Assam,
Bongaigaon was divided to give way for Chirang district.
Bongaigaon has a major petrochemical industry, the Indian Oil
Corporation Limited(IOCL BGR).
The town occupied a place in the map of Indian Railway with
the establishment of the railway station in the year 1908. Most
of the institutions like ITI, Bongaigaon College, Office of
the Assam State Electricity Board, in the early 60’s and in fact
the very base of the development of the town was laid in this
decade only. The development further gained momentum with
the establishment of the Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemi-
cals Limited (BRPL) Complex in the year 1972
at Dhaligaon and also Thermal Power Plant at Salakati.
Though these area are not within the limit of Bongaigaon Mu-
nicipality the town also caters to the demand of this population.
The Bongaigaon Town Committee was first constituted in the
year 1961 and was upgraded to a Municipal Board in the year
1977. Presently the Municipal Area consists of 25 nos. of
wards covering an area of 14.31 sq m.
New Bongaigaon falls under the Northeast Frontier Rail-
way zone of the Indian Railways.There are two stations in
Bongaigaon - New Bongaigaon railway station (2nd largest
railway junction of Assam state) with a population around
1,74,160.
It is situated 36 m above mean sea level with average annual
temperature around 26 Co , climate condition in new bongaiga-
on is semi arid with annual precipitation around 1717 millimeter
It is situated near banks of Manas & Champabati river
(Tributary of the Brahmputra river)
New Bongaigaon Falls under earthquake zone V according to
IS 1893(part 1) : 2016.
FIELD INVESTIGATION :
6 No. of 150 mm. dia bores were drilled down up to the depth
FIELD BORING & SAMPLING :
of 15.00 mt. at proposed site of construction by our skilled and
experienced site personnel by using percussion drilling in Feb-
ruary 2018 as suggested by client.
2) Atterberg Limit
3) Specific Gravity
5) Direct Shear Test : The direct shear tests were carried out
by small size box shear test in accordance with IS- 2720
(Part-13 )-1986 and apparatus confirming to IS- 11229-
1985.

VOID RATIO:- Void ratio of a soil mass is defined as the ratio of volume of voids to the volume of solids.
e0 VOID RATIO = ((G * ϒw)/ϒd) - 1 0.88
In Case of
General shear Qd = C*Nc*sc*dc*ic + q*(Nq-1)*sq*dq*iq + 0.5*B*ϒ*Nr*sr*dr*ir*W'
failure
Where,
VOID RATIO:- Void ratio of a soil mass is defined as the ratio of volume of voids to the volume of solids.
e0 VOID RATIO = ((G * ϒw)/ϒd) - 1 0.8832
In Case of Local
q'd = 2/3*C*N'C*sC*dC*iC + q*(N'q-1)*sq*dq*iq + 0.5*B*ϒ*N'r*sr*dr*ir*W'
shear failure
Where,
VOID RATIO:- Void ratio of a soil mass is defined as the ratio of volume of voids to the volume of solids.
e0 VOID RATIO = ((G * ϒw)/ϒd) - 1 0.8832
Ultimate bearing capacity for mixed shear failure can be obtained by linear inter pollation between general shear
failure and local shear failure.
2
SBC calculation for local shear failure = 16.51 t/m
2
SBC CALCULATION FOR MIXED SHEAR FAILURE = 9.54 t/m
10
WHERE,
B = WIDTH OF FOUNDATION IN m 3 m
3
FIELD DENSITY OF SOIL IN /m = 1.52 t/m3
DEPTH OF FOUNDATION IN m 4 m
Cb= Grain Size Correction Factor as per Foundation Engineering by N.V.NAYAK on page no 2.42 1
The ultimate load capacity of pile (Qu) for medium & coarse sand is given as :
Qu = 40N Ap +
.
For non-plastic silt or very fine sand the equation has modified as ;
Qu = 30N Ap +
.
where,
N = average N value at pile tip 34
Lb = effective length of penetration of pile in the baring strata in m 7
D = diameter or minimum width of pile shaft in m 0.45
Ap = cross sectional are of pile tip in m2 0.15896
N' = average N along the pile shaft 21
As = surface area of pile shaft in m2 9.891
RECOMMENDATIONS & : 1) Water table was encountered in all of the boreholes during
the investigation in February 2018.
CONCLUSIONS
2) We have determined Safe Bearing Capacity as mentioned
below for the proposed structure. Suitable values may be
used for design purpose.
3) We have determine the liquefaction potential as soil is
fine sand and mixture of silt with presence of ground water
table.
