3. FIRST AID MEASURES

Symptoms and signs of exposure

Splashes into the eye may cause irritation. If digested can lead to irritation of the mouth, irritation of
the throat, irritation of the digestive tract, vomiting. Aspiration into the lungs may occur directly or
following ingestion. This can cause chemical pneumonitis which may be fatal. Prolonged exposure
to vapour/mist concentrations above the recommended occupational exposure standard may cause
: headache, dizziness, nausea, irritation of the eyes, upper respiratory tract, mouth and digestive
tract, cardiac irregularities, asphyxiation, unconsciousness and even death.

4. GENERAL ADVICE
: Remove contaminated clothing

Inhaled : Move affected person to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Obtain
medical attention immediately.
On skin contact : Wash thoroughly with soap and water.
On contact with eyes : wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids
held open, consult an eye specialist if irritation persist.
On ingestion : Do not induce vomiting. Rinse mouth with water. Seek medical attention.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Hazardous thermal decompositiion and combustion products:
Carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, oxides of sulphur, unburnt hydrocarbons. In case of fire, toxic
fumes might be formed.

Suitable extinguishing media:

water spray, dry extinguishing media, foam, carbon dioxide (C02)

Unsuitable extinguishing media :

Water in a jet. Use of Halon extinguishers should be avoided for environmental reasons.

Personal protective equipment :

Use in a well ventilated area. Wear protective overalls, gloves and safety glasses.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Spill or leak handling information;

Personal Protection: Put on adequate protective equipment. Remove all possible sources of ignition
in the surrounding area and evacuate all personnel.

Procedures :
Keep spectators away. Floor may be slippery, use care to avoid falling. Contain spills immediately
with inert materials (eg sand, earth). Transfer liquids and solid material to separate suitable
containers for recovery or disposal. Contain spill by pumping (use an explosion proof or hand-
pump) or with a suitable absorbent and place in covered container.
Caution:
Keep spills and cleaning run off out of municipal sewers and open bodies of water.
Incinerate liquid and contaminated solids in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling
Appropriate protective equipment must be worn when handling a spill of this material. Do not
breathe vapour. Take precautionary measures against static discharges.
Storage
Classified as a class C1 combustible liquid for storage and handling purposes. Store in a well
ventilated place away from sources of ignition. Keep containers closed when not in use - check
regularly for spills.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering controls:
Ensure workplace is well ventilated to maintain air concentrations below exposure standards.
Personal protection:
Respiratory protection: None required under normal operating conditions.
Eye Protection: Use chemical splash goggles (AS 1337 or approved equivalent)
Hand protection : Protective gloves if splashes are likely to occur.
Body Protection : wear overalls to minimise contamination of personal clothing.
