by various leftist and Islamist organization
and student movements.
Stages
The Iranian revolution was divided into two stages:

● The first stage was when an alliance of liberal, leftist, and religious groups
oust “the Shah.”
● The second stage, often
named the Islamic Revolution,
was when the Ayatollahs came
to power.
Social Changes

monarchy → Islamic Republic.
The impacts on other countries

The Iranian revolution did not only transform Iran completely, but also had
far-reaching consequences for the world.

● It caused a deep shift in Cold War and global geopolitics. The US did not
only lose a key strategic ally against the communist threat, but it also
gained a new enemy.
● Emboldened by developments in Iran, the Soviet Union invaded
Afghanistan in 1979. This was followed by the eruption of the Iran-Iraq
war of 1980, designed to bring down the new Iranian theocratic regime.
Example: The Hostage Crisis (Iran and
American)

● Iranian revolutionaries seized the U.S. embassy

and took the employees hostage.
● They held the employees captive for 444 days
● It changed the way America viewed Iran.
● Leading to the broken bond between Iran and
America
