System Restore in Windows XP

System Restore component of Windows XP enables you to restore a system to a

previous state
It monitors changes to the system and some application files and automatically
creates easily identified restore points
Restore points
i are created
ddduring
i the
h ffollowing
ll i system events, user actions,
i or
time intervals:
• Installation of an unsigned device driver
• Installation of System Restore compliant applications
• Installation of an update by using Automatic Updates
• System Restore operation
• Restoring data from backup media
• Manually creating a restore point
• Creating scheduled restore points at regular intervals

Restore points contain the following two types of information:

• Snapshot of the registry
• Certain dynamic system files

Methods for Restoring Replicated Data

Non-authoritative restore (default)

• Data from non-failed domain controllers is replicated to the newly
restored domain controller
• It results in the restored data (which may be out-of-date) becoming
synchronized with the data on other domain controllers through
replication

Authoritative restore
• It causes the restored domain controller’s
controller s replicated data to be
authoritative in relation to its replication partners
• Has effect of rolling back the entire network to the point in time of the
backup

Primary restore
• Used when the server to be restored is the only working server of a
replicated data set
