Your Name: Shane Pendleton Date of Activity: 2/9, 2/19 Faculty name: Linda Perez
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
• On 2/9 I attended the Medical Reserve Corps of Southern Arizona “Stop the bleed”
training. At this training, I learned how to apply tourniquets, gauze, and pressure to stop a
hemorrhage in an emergent situation.
• On 2/19 I shadowed a physician at the pain clinic at Banner South. While shadowing, I
observed how the care team treats chronic pain for a variety of patients. I also attended a
seminar on the pharmacokinetics of opioids.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
• The “Stop the bleed” training was held at the Pima County Health Department and lasted
four hours.
• My shadowing experience was at Banner South, and I was there for five and a half hours.
• I really enjoyed the “Stop the bleed” training, and I feel like it was a valuable experience
for me. In nursing school, we don’t learn a lot of the emergency training that first
responders learn. Practicing applying tourniquets and learning strategies to stop
hemorrhage made me feel a lot more comfortable about my ability to handle an
emergency situation. If I saw someone bleeding in the street, I now feel like I know what
I would do.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
• I think that bleeding control is a valuable and necessary skill as a nurse and as a citizen
who could assist the community. I would highly recommend this to other nursing
students as I feel like it clarified a topic that we never explicitly learned in nursing
school.
• I would not recommend shadowing in the pain clinic unless a student had a specific
reason or interest in pain. For me, I enjoyed the experienced as a research opportunity for
my paper. I don’t think other students would find the experience to be valuable.
