LESSON RATIONALE
Kindergarten students need to be able to relate to what they are learning for it to click, so by taking the
concept that people have different jobs and having them choose a job they want to have in the future will
help the student make that connection.

READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal: Students will identify that people have different jobs because they have different abilities
and interests.
B. Objective: After discussing various jobs that people have, students will decide a job they want to
pursue in the future and explain why they want to have that job.
C. NCSS: Individual development and identity
IAS: K.4.3 Explain why people in a community choose different jobs

II. Management Plan

a. Materials:
Drawing page
Crayons/markers
PowerPoint with job pictures
b. Time: 35 minutes
c. Space: Carpet and desks
d. Behavior: I will monitor behavior and reinforce positive behavior through clipping up
student who are behaving on the clip chart and using a skittle reward system. I will also use
call and response method to regain students focus.

III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners—Students in my class, struggle to

focus for extended periods of time, so I am incorporating various activities that will allow for them to
move and be actively participating. Some of the students require extra guidance on independent
assignments so I will assist them.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION (CAEP K-6 1.b)

IV. Anticipatory Set (7 minutes)
• Ask students, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Allow time for them to respond.
 When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of being a ballet dancer (demonstrate a dance move),
but then I realized that because I didn’t take many lessons, it probably wasn’t the best option for
me.
 Then when I was in fourth grade, I decided I wanted to be a veterinarian, but sick animals made
me sad and I don’t like seeing blood. So, I figured out that I couldn’t be a veterinarian.
 Then when I was in middle school and high school, I dreamed of being a singer (show 30 second
clip of my YouTube video). I was really great at that, but realized I loved teaching and working
with kids more, so now I am going to be a teacher.

V. Purpose: “Today we are going to explore different jobs that people have and why they have those
jobs.”

VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output) (10 minutes)

 “I have some images of some jobs, I am going to show them to you and we are going to discuss
what they do for their job and why.”
 Show picture of police officer, trash man, pilot, bank teller, veterinarian, teacher, mother, father,
football player, hair stylist. Ask students “what does this person do for their job?” allow time for
responses after each.
 Tell students that there are lots of jobs that we did not talk about but to think about what they are
good at and like to do. Then tell them to think of what they want to be and why. Then have the
students go back to their seats and draw a picture of what they want to be.

VII. Check for understanding (8 minutes)

 I want the students to understand that every job is important, and they should think about what
they like to do and are good at when they pick a job someday. I will have them draw a picture of
what they want to be.

Review learning outcomes / Closure – (10 minutes)

Then I will have all students come up and share their drawing and answer three questions:
a. What do you want to be when you grow up?
b. Why do you want to have that job?
c. What does a person with that job do?

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

Develop a plan for assessing the degree to which your students have mastered the learning outcomes
from this lesson. Your plan should include formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and
strengthen instruction that will promote continuous intellectual, social, emotional, and physical
development of each student. (CAEP K-6 3.a)
A. Formative:. I will have students present their drawing and answer questions at the end of the lesson.
REFLECTION AND POST-LESSON ANALYSIS
(CAEP K-6 3.b)
1. How many students achieved the lesson objective(s)? For those who did not, why not?
2. What were my strengths and weaknesses?
3. How should I alter this lesson?
4. How would I pace it differently?
5. Were all students actively participating? If not, why not?
6. What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?
Include additional self-answer questions that specifically address unique lesson content, methodology,
and assessment.
