Slavery in the American South  

 
 

Inquiry Question:​ How did the system of slavery in the American South create profit for the enslavers and break 
the ​will​ of the enslaved?

Have you ever read the story about the little engine that could?  
 

 
 
1. What is the message of that story? 
I don't know the story 
2. What is the significance of a repeated message? For example, if you hear something about yourself or you tell 
yourself something repeatedly, how does that impact what you believe about yourself? 
Then it's gonna take impact and you start to have that mind set 
3. What if that message was negative? 
Then you would have bad impacts and a negative mind set  
4. Why would someone want to reinforce a negative message about ​another​ person? 
Maybe because they want to see them in a bad way or they just want to have others to be unhappy

Read the excerpt and answer the questions that follow: 
 
Economy ​is the way a country manages its money and resources (such as workers and land) to produce, buy, and sell 
goods and services. Goods are products like cars, computers, or even corn. Services are duties performed by one person 
for another, such as teaching and transportation. The price of each good or service is determined not by the government 
but by demand. ​Demand​ is a measure of how many people want to buy a particular good or service.  
 
In a healthy economy, demand for goods and services if high. Businesses flourish as they work to keep up with that 
demand. In a weak economy, demand is low and businesses suffer. 
 
1. The American South before the Civil War had a healthy economy. What did this mean for people in power (those 
who owned businesses? 
It mean that the people in power are basically rich and they had a good income 
2. The economy in the American South was healthy in part because of the high demand for cotton. What does that 
mean? 
It means that mostly the people in the part is that they are mostly having a good economy of the cottom 
3. How would slavery benefit the economy? 
  It benefits the economy because slaves were exencial for the production of the product

Growth of Slavery  ● The U.S maded illegal to import new slaves on 1808 
  ● Moslty parts of the north benefited on the slave trade 
● Slavery was suppost to be limited to slaves and their families that were 
already in the U.S 
● During 1808 and 1861 there was a quater of a million slaves that were illegaly

Summarize Section 1:  
 
At the beginning of the 19th centuary slave trade was ban form the U.S, only allowing the slaves that were already in the 
country to serve asn enslave.Most people often broke that law, and between 1808 and 1861 a quater of a million slaves 
were illegaly imported. 
 
Enslaves were not happy at all their lifes were moslty painfull and horrible to described.Slaves were lash hardlyat leat 
most than 100 time a day, most of the time they were fetters in their feet and in night they secreatly had a little fun to 
have resistence. 
 
Enslaved were controll to work in day and night, over long period of time and had flew periods of sleep.

Summarize Section 2:  
In many ways did the enslave resisted, they woud usuallt stated riots and rebellion aganist slavery. During most of the 
19th centiuary enslaved had lots of riots makin it one of the ways they resisted.Other flew thousend resisted by escaping 
to the north, canada or mexico many of them did> the ones that escaped came back and helped the enslaved to escape 
 
Authorities were worried that the poor whites would of join slave riots to destroy the properties of the richg whites. 
 
 
Analysis:  
 
 
1. Why would the number of enslaved people increase with the growth of the economy in the South? In other words, 
why was the demand for new slaves so great? 
 
The demand for new slaves was so great because the plantations were growing and they need more people to work on 
them 
2. Revisit this passage by John Little: 
 
They say that slaves are happy, because they laugh, and are merry. I myself and three or four others, have 
received two hundred lashes in the day, and had our feet in fetters; yet, at night, we would sing and dance, and 
make others laugh at the rattling of our chains. Happy men, we must have been! We did it to keep down trouble, 
and to keep our hearts from being completely broken: that is as true as the gospel!  
 
According to this passage, how did the enslaved assert their humanity in spite of their condition? 
 
Slaves assert their humanity in spite they're in cponditions by at least having little fun and getting distracted of their 
horrible life 
 
3. How did the U.S. government respond to slave revolts? Why? 
 
The U.S government responded by sending the militia to stop the riots becasue they did not want the slaves to cause 
problems or eventually a war 
 
4. In addition to revolts, what other way did the enslaved resist slavery? 
 
Other ways the slaves resisted the enslaved was escaping but that was dangerous and also making their ways 
out by dangerous environments 
 
5. Why would some white people hate the rich planters? 
 
Some of the poor whites hated the rich planters because they had money and power and they also control some 
people

The system of slavery maded lots of profit for the rich, but it was breaking with their will and how free they were.
