CROSS-EYED
“When I survey the wondrous cross, on which the Prince of Glory died… See from His head, His hands,
His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet…? …Love so amazing,
so divine, demands my life, my soul, my all.” -Isaac Watts, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.
Did ever such love and sorrow meet? Has anyone else ever loved you quite that much? Has there ever
been a more amazing, more divine love? Have you ever taken at least one moment to fully consider the
love that was shown to us in Jesus’ crucifixion? Referring to His own crucifixion, Jesus said, “‘I, when I
am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself’” (John 12:44). Jesus, again referencing His
crucifixion, says, “‘Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted
up, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish’” (John 3:14-15). In John 6:40, Jesus later says,
“‘For this is the will of my Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal
life, and I will raise him up on the last day.’” If you have never looked upon our Savior’s broken, bleeding
body hanging on the cross for you, and placed your faith in Him and His salvation, may you consider
doing that in your heart for the very first time and experience this eternal life Jesus spoke of.
If on the other hand, you have at one point placed your faith in Jesus for salvation and have received this
eternal life, how long has it been since you have looked back to the cross that Jesus died on for you? The
writer of Hebrews says, “Let us look to Jesus…who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross,
despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured
such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and your hearts give up” (Hebrews
12:2-3). Charles Spurgeon said, “There is no getting near to God, except as we
get near the cross.” Fanny J. Crosby offers similar thoughts in her hymn,
“Near the Cross”:
Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day, with its shadows o’er me.
Near the cross I’ll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever…
Matt Redman offers the following reflections in his song, “Once Again”:
Once again I look upon the cross where you died
I'm humbled by your mercy and I'm broken inside
Once again I thank you
Once again I pour out my life
What good would it do for you to once again look upon the cross where He
Rev. Frank Pruden died? O Lord God, please help us all to be “cross-eyed.”
