1.3 Safety

The Series 4 and Series 4A Modules may produce voltage up to 110 Volts DC (VDC) or current up to 3.0 Amps
when exposed to sunlight. A single module could create a lethal shock hazard during hours of daylight, including
periods of low light levels. The danger increases as modules are connected together in series and/or parallel.

To avoid fire and/or injury due to ground fault and associated electrical hazards:

• Do not unplug PV module connections while under load. Do not disconnect the module connectors
during daylight hours unless the module is in an open circuit condition or all modules in series and
parallel are covered with an opaque material, such as a tarp or blanket.

• Repair or replace damaged wires immediately. Keep all array wiring out of reach of non-qualified
personnel.

• Do not concentrate light on the module in an attempt to increase power output.

• Never allow the PV array system voltage to exceed 1500VDC under any condition.

• Replace broken modules immediately.

• Repair any ground faults immediately.

• Do not work on modules or systems when the modules or wiring are wet.

Reverse currents higher than the rated values for a First Solar module (reverse current overload), may result in
module failure, including module breakage. Extreme and continuous reverse current overload conditions may
cause a fire or create electrical shock hazards. To avoid reverse current overload:

• Maintain equivalent voltage in parallel strings by installing an equal number of modules per string within
the same source circuit. Failure to install modules with balanced voltage in parallel strings can result in
voltage imbalance.

• Comply with all practices as stated in this document and repair ground faults.

Wear safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1-2003) and cut-resistant gloves when working on non-interconnected modules or
systems.

Wear electrically rated PPE when working on interconnected modules or system components.

Series 4 and Series 4A Modules are not compatible with Series 3 Modules within the same interconnected string.

• To avoid risk of fire, do not interconnect Series 4/4A Modules within the same interconnected string as
Series 3 Modules.

2 Regulatory Compliance
It is the responsibility of the installer and/or system integrator to ensure compliance with all local electrical codes which may
be applicable to the installation and use of First Solar Series 4 and Series 4A Modules.

• Before beginning the PV system design and installation, contact appropriate local authorities to determine local
code, permit, and inspection requirements.

Series 4 and Series 4A Modules meet the requirements of Safety Class II for 1000VDC systems and Safety Class 0 for
1500VDC systems. Series 4 and Series 4A Modules are tested and certified per IEC 61730 Application Class A up to a
maximum system voltage of 1000V and Application Class B up to a maximum system voltage of 1500V, both with maximum
overcurrent protection ratings of 4.0A.

Series 4 and Series 4A Modules are tested and certified per IEC 61646 for a maximum system voltage of 1500V.

3 Electrical Specifications
See the Series 4 and Series 4A Module datasheet (PD-5-401-04) and module label for all electrical ratings of the module. All
electrical ratings are listed at Standard Test Conditions (irradiance of 1000 W/m2, AM 1.5 spectrum, and a cell temperature
of 25°C).

3.1 System Derating Factors

Under normal operation, a photovoltaic module may experience conditions that produce more current and/or voltage than
reported at Standard Test Conditions. Accordingly, the datasheet and label specification values listed for STC should be
multiplied by a factor of 1.25 for voltage and current when determining component ratings. Adjustments of those factors
might be needed to respect site specific climate conditions.

As defined in the National Electric Code and IEC 62548 , the maximum system voltage for a Photovoltaic System is
determined using the open circuit voltage of the PV modules. First Solar’s Series 4 family of modules have unique
performance characteristics that result in an increased open circuit voltage at low operating temperatures. The open circuit
voltage should be multiplied by a low temperature correction factor as specified in Application Note PD-5-435 NA in addition
to the 1.25 factor mentioned above. This low temperature correction factor should be based on the site specific design
temperature profile.

4 Installation

4.1 Mounting
Physically damaged modules may cause ground faults and associated electrical hazards. To avoid these
! conditions:

! Do not install the modules during high wind or wet conditions to reduce the likelihood of injury.

Wear safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1-2003) and cut-resistant gloves when working on non-interconnected modules or
! systems.

! Wear electrically rated PPE when working on interconnected modules or system components.

• Handle modules with care during installation, as heavy impact on the front, back, or edges could result in damage
to the module. Do not walk or stand on modules or retaining clips.

• Do not stack or carry multiple modules on top of one another after removal from factory packaging to minimize
the risk of breakage.

• Do not lift or pull on modules using lead wires or strain relief wire loops to minimize the risk of wire damage.

Mounting of the Series 4 and Series 4A Module to a suitable structure can be done by attaching the module directly to the
structure using retaining clips (see Figure 5.1).

The interface of the mounting structure to the module (including the retaining clip and rubber insulator) must meet the
technical requirements specified in First Solar Application Note PD-5-320-04 and must be approved for use by First Solar
prior to installation. The mounting system design must provide adequate support for the module to prevent damage from
occurring when the module is subjected to pressures of 2400 Pa (which equates to wind pressure of 130 km/hour, with a
safety factor of 3 for gusty conditions based on IEC 61646). The location of the clips shall be along the 1200mm length of
the module and the center point of the clip shall be located between 250mm and 300mm from the module edge. See Figure
5.1 for allowed location. Rubber insulator material, or equivalent must be used between the module and both the clip and
mounting structure to provide adequate protection of the module and must meet all requirements described in PD-5-320-04
Module Mounting. No direct contact of rigid structures is permitted against the surface or edges of the module.

All mounting structures must provide a flat plane for the modules to be mounted on, and must not cause any twist or stress
to be placed on the module.

Modules should not be installed in a way that restricts air circulation to the underside of the module. Modules generate
heat and require adequate airflow for cooling.

Installation locations and module support structures should be selected to ensure modules and connectors (open or mated)
are never submersed in standing water. First Solar modules are tested and certified for applications involving pressures
from snow/ice/wind up to 2400 Pa when mounted properly. Snow drifts could result in a nonuniform loading of the modules
which exceeds the tested pressure. If it is expected that loads will exceed 2400 Pa, it is recommended to clear snow from
modules, and ensure that ice/thaw/freeze cycles under snow drifts do not result in excessive stresses on the module.

PD-5-200-04 | REV 2.3 | 0348_UG_A4_9FEB16

Series 4 Module User Guide—Global | Page 6 of 14

Heavy construction and trenching should be completed prior to module installation to minimize debris and dust.

Ensure any site preparation or maintenance chemicals (soil binding agents or chemicals used for on-site dust control or weed
control) do not spray, splash, or drift onto the surface of the modules or its associated components.

Maximum allowable pressure on modules may not exceed 2400 Pa without additional module support that must be tested
and approved by First Solar.

For rooftop mounting, modules must be mounted over a fire resistant roof covering rated for the application. The
recommended minimum standoff height is 8cm.

4.1.1 Series 4A Module Installation Considerations (with Anti-Reflective Coating)

Handle with gloves to preserve visual appearance of anti-reflective coated modules (Series 4A).

During handling and installation, avoid abrasive contact with top glass surface to prevent scratches of anti-reflective coating
on Series 4A modules.

Do not remove cardboard separator paper before removing modules from box. Doing so may result in scratches of the ARC
film when pulling modules out of the box.

When cleaning Anti-Reflective Coated modules, specific module cleaning guidelines documented in PD-5-804 Module
Cleaning Guidelines must be followed. Failure to comply with the Module Cleaning Guidelines may void warranty.

Basic cleaning guidelines for Anti-Reflective Coated modules are as follows:

Allowable Cleaning Methods

• Low pressure non-contact water cleaning may be used with unlimited cycles (i.e. water spray is allowed, but scrubbing
or brushing with water is prohibited).

• Dry cleaning with soft cloth mops up to six times annually

Prohibited Cleaning Methods

• Wet contact cleaning (i.e. combining water with mops, brushes, squeegees)

• Dry contact cleaning with anything other than soft cloths or mops (i.e. bristle brushes, sponges, or squeegees).

4.2 Location, Angle and Tilt

To maximize performance, modules should be located in an area that receives direct sunlight from mid-morning to mid-
afternoon (typically 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Installation must avoid locating the modules where shadows may be caused by
buildings, trees, etc.

PV performance modeling software should be used to determine the optimum orientation and tilt angle for each location.

For tilted free-field applications where there is row to row shading, modules shall be installed in landscape orientation.
Please refer to First Solar Application Note PD-5-425-03 for additional information.

PD-5-200-04 | REV 2.3 | 0348_UG_A4_9FEB16

Series 4 Module User Guide—Global | Page 7 of 14

4.3 Module Shading Considerations

To minimize the risk of module shading damage please follow the Module Shading Field Guide PD-5-366. Instances of
shading that will lead to a voided warranty include the High Risk listed items below.

High Risk (Prohibited) Shading

1. Resting or adhering slender objects (tools, brooms, clothing, wires, tape) on sunny side of operating modules, or when
nearer than ~1.5-2 meters above operating modules, especially when shadow oriented parallel to cells.

2. Fixed objects within ~1.5-2 meters above operating modules that cast a shadow over the long dimension of the cells
should be avoided. Close objects like posts, ropes, signs, fences, or equipment can begin to increase risk of partial
shading of full cells when nearer than ~1.5-2 meters from the sunny-side of operating module.

3. Working continuously with outstretched arms or tools over operating modules.

4. A support frame or mounting method on the short edge(s) of modules that fully shades the entire length of a cell (either
partially or completely).

5. Cleaning apparatuses, including cleaning robots and other mechanisms that traverse the module repeatedly while the
system is operating (unless evaluated and approved by First Solar).

Series 4 Module User Guide—Global | Page 8 of 14

4.4 Electrical Interconnection

First Solar Series 4 and Series 4A Modules are pre-configured with industry standard connectors that are “touch proof” with
all live parts protected against accidental contact and protected against polarity reversal. The cables and connectors are
UV and weather resistant from –40°C to +90°C, and rated for 1500VDC and 22.5A (minimum, before derating for ambient
temperature).

Modules with different FS Series numbers (i.e. FS 3 vs. FS 4) have significantly different electrical operating
! characteristics and should not be interconnected within the same inverter or MPPT to prevent power output loss
and voltage imbalance conditions that may create the risk of reverse current overload.

Damaged wires, connectors, or junction boxes may cause ground faults, and associated electrical hazards,
! including electrical shock. To avoid these conditions:

• Protect unmated connectors from dust and moisture by using sealing caps (not provided, available from connector
manufacturer).

• Limit module connectors to 10 or fewer plug cycles.

• Do not pull lead wires tight at any time. After installation, the connected wire must not be under stress or tension.

• Do not use junction box assembly or lead wire strain relief loops to secure excess wire or to bear weight greater
than that of a (properly wire managed) module’s own wire and mated connector pair.

• Connector bodies and cables should not be tightly secured at both ends to any mounting structure to allow for
thermal expansion and contraction.

• Secure wire or connected components so that no loose wires or components are hanging within 0.46m (1.5 feet)
of the ground in free field applications, and so that wire/components are hanging clear of roof coverings or pooled
water in rooftop applications.

• Ensure connectors are fully mated.

• Ensure wire securement methods, such as use of cable ties, do not damage wire insulation. The minimum module
lead wire bend radius is 5 times wire diameter. Observe minimum bend radius specifications on all other PV
system wiring.

• Ensure wires are not in contact with sharp edges of the mounting structure to avoid abrading the wire sheath.

• Inspect and maintain wire management requirements over the life of the plant.

Module-to-module and module-to-harness interconnection is advised to be done between same manufacturer and type
of connectors. The First Solar module warranty is not affected by the interconnection of different supplier connectors,
however, First Solar cannot guarantee that different connector types will be mateable in every connection instance.

Components used to interconnect the modules must be compatible with the connectors, and provide proper system
operation and fault protection as required by any applicable codes and standards.

Series 4 Module User Guide—Global | Page 9 of 14

4.4.1 Inverter Compatibility

Series 4 and Series 4A Modules are designed for utility grid connected, commercial and industrial, off-grid energy access,
and fuel displacement applications. First Solar FS Series PV Modules are compatible with a range of string, central, and
transformer less inverters. All inverters must be approved for module compatibility by First Solar prior to installation to
preserve module warranty. Reference PD-5-331 and PD-5-332 for a list of approved compatible inverters. When connecting
modules or module strings in series ensure inverter ratings are appropriate.

When selecting an inverter, system bias conditions and grounding should also be considered. FS Series PV Modules can be
used in negative-grounded or ungrounded installations. Use in bi-polar systems should be reviewed in detail by First Solar
prior to approval. FS Series PV Modules should not be used in positive-grounded systems.

When connecting First Solar Series 4 and/or Series 4A Modules in a series string, ensure that the system design voltage
and inverter design specifications are not exceeded. First Solar application note PD-5-435 NA should be referenced when
determining the site specific maximum open-circuit system voltage (Voc) seen by the inverter. For 1000VDC applications,
this is typically ensured by limiting series strings to 10 modules or less. For 1500VDC applications, this is typically ensured by
limiting series strings to 15 modules or less.

The Maximum Power Point (MPP) voltage of a module array must be considered for compatibility with the specified MPP
window of the inverter. Similar to the maximum open-circuit voltage, the MPP voltage of the array is dependent on ambient
conditions, and the system should be designed to ensure that the MPP voltage of the array remains within the MPP window
for expected operating conditions.

4.4.2 Grounding Method

First Solar Series 4 and Series 4A Modules have no exposed conductive surfaces and do not require equipment grounding as
long as a clip length of 100mm for a standard 4 clip mounting is not exceeded.

First Solar Series 4 and Series 4A Modules can be used in grounded, ungrounded, floating, and bi-polar system architectures,
provided all appropriate design requirements are met and approved by First Solar.

4.4.3 Overcurrent Protection

Series 4 and Series 4A Modules have a maximum overcurrent protection rating of 4.0A as defined by IEC 61730 test methods.

PV systems should be designed to comply with and provide module overcurrent protection consistent with local codes as
appropriate for the intended application class of the system.

Connection of parallel strings must incorporate measures to protect modules against reverse currents exceeding their rating
as described in FS Application Note PD-5-308.

Please refer to FS Application Note PD-5-308 for additional information on module overcurrent protection.

6 Proper Operating Conditions

The proper operating condition requirements listed below must be maintained.

Important: Failure to maintain proper operating condition requirements for the modules will void the applicable
warranties.

Requirements:

• Short circuit operation is permitted only during short duration system safety testing or in fail-safe system states.

• All electronic components that are interconnected to modules must have an operating voltage window that matches
the maximum power point of the array, and be capable of operating the array at the maximum power point at all
times.

• All electronic components that are interconnected to modules must be rated for the maximum operating voltage of
the array.

• Modules must have adequate ventilation and airflow to prevent operating temperatures above 85°C.

• Modules must not be partially shaded by obstructions at times of high irradiance (typically between 9:00am and
3:00pm). Module row-to-row shading in landscape orientation is acceptable; Module row-to-row shading in portrait
orientation is prohibited.

• Strain relief cable ties must not be removed.

• If module cleaning is undertaken, modules must be cleaned only when in open circuit – either disconnected from
load, or during times when inverter is turned off and otherwise in accordance with PD-5-804 “FS Series PV Module
Cleaning Guidelines”.

• Series 4A Modules include anti-reflective coated glass. Use of prohibited cleaning methods can reduce the energy
enhancing effects of the anti-reflective coated glass and void warranty. Please consult PD-5-804 “FS Series PV
Module Cleaning Guidelines” for allowable cleaning methods compatible with Series 4A Modules.

• Module boxes must be handled per PD-5-801 Box Handling and Storage. Failure to follow the Box Handling and
Storage guidelines may result in damage to modules that would not be covered under the Module Warranty Terms
and Conditions.

Cleaning activities create risk of damage to the modules and array components, as well as the potential for electric
shock. Large amounts of dust and dirt on the surface of the module can reduce the power produced. Natural
!
rainfall will typically remove most dust. Should auxiliary cleaning be required, please refer to the Module Cleaning
Guidelines (PD-5-804) for additional information. Failure to comply with the Module Cleaning Guidelines may void
warranty.

Broken modules should be replaced immediately. Periodically, annually at a minimum, inspect modules for any

! signs of damage or broken glass. If broken modules are found, place material into a closed container for return
to First Solar recycling program, or dispose of module in accordance with local requirements. Please visit www.
firstsolar.com/recycling for further details on the recycling program.

• It is normal for the modules to exhibit visual irregularities which do not impact power. Series 4A Modules with anti-
reflective coated glass are more likely to exaggerate the visual appearance of normal scratches, fingerprints, and
other blemishes due to the optical properties of the glass interface.

• Check that all electrical connections are tight and corrosion free.

The most common causes of lower than expected PV system power output are:

• Inverter failure

• Improper or faulty field wiring or connections

• Blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers

• Excessive amounts of dirt and dust on the modules

• Shading of modules by trees, poles, or buildings

• Improperly calibrated or malfunctioning monitoring equipment

PV MODULE DRAWING (THIN FILM) - First Solar Series 4 Module Mounting – Application Note

Application Note
FS Series 4 PV Module Mounting
The information contained in this application note is intended to provide designers of First Solar PV
module mounting and support systems with both minimum requirements and recommendations for the
development of mounting solutions which will satisfy First Solar’s technical and mechanical
requirements to provide a safe and approved solution for the installation of all First Solar FS Series 4
laminate PV modules (i.e. FS-4XXX, FS-4XXX-A, etc…). North American users requiring the use of
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed components please reference PD-5-320-04 NA.

The information contained in this document is not exhaustive and does not consider all technical design
requirements. It rather provides the minimum required mounting provisions to ensure First Solar FS
Series PV Modules perform in a safe, compliant and reliable manner.

Compliance with these recommended requirements will not, by itself, result in a fully approved PV
System design.

Important: It is the responsibility of vendors, customers , installers, design professionals, and engi-
neers to follow a due diligence process to ensure the structure meets applicable structural
and electrical code requirements of the jurisdiction where the product will be sold or in-
stalled. First Solar is not responsible for bonding failure, breakage, damage, wear or mod-
ule performance issues that are deemed to be caused by design or installation practices.

First Solar is not responsible for the cost associated with the development or manufacture of
prototypes. Please see the appropriate First Solar FS Series PV Module User Guide (PD-5-200-XX) for

Figure 2. Recommended location of retaining clips (back side)

Mounting Structure and Clip Shading Considerations

When module cells are sharply shaded over their full length by structural components, the modules’
cells may experience localized areas of reverse bias (negative voltage/positive current) that may result in
damage. Please refer to PD-5-366, “Module Shading Field Guide” for further information. .
 While there exist countless ways to shade a module, a few typical field scenarios that pertain
directly to clips and structural components can be divided into no risk and high risk.
 No Risk: Shading of active area under typical module mounting clips mounted on long edges of
modules poses no risk to reliability or performance.
 High Risk: A structural component or mounting method on the short edge(s) of modules that
fully shades the entire length of a cell (either partial or complete width of cell) can create a high
risk of undesirable shading.

Module Orientation Specifications

Module mounting in landscape orientation is required for any tilted applications where row-to-row
shading is present. Portrait orientation is prohibited where row-to-row shading is present. Portrait
orientation is allowed where no row-to-row shading is present (i.e. a flat rooftop or parallel to tilted
rooftop). Tilted portrait mounting requires a slide protection. Please see the appropriate First Solar

Module User Guide (Document Numbers PD-5-200-XX) for additional information on application, design,
and operation.

Retaining Clip and Mounting System Required Minimum Specifications

First Solar requires that a module retaining clip and mounting system must meet the following minimum
specifications:

 The retaining clip and mounting system (retaining system) shall not compromise the integrity of
the module under the applied load as defined in IEC 61646, 10.16.
 The retaining system shall not deflect more than 0.01 mm/mm [0.01 inch/inch].
 The clip and support rail retaining system shall be designed in combination with one another
and must have a gap on the vertical edge to the module of 1mm [0.04 inches] to allow for ther-
mal expansion in the width and length of the module glass. See Figure 3
 A minimum gap of 10mm [0.4 inch] between two modules is required to prevent the contact be-
tween the modules
 The retaining clip shall have a “hard stop” that limits the top and bottom surfaces of the insula-
tor material compression by a maximum of 10% at maximum torque of fastening hardware.
 The retaining clip shall provide a gap of less than 6.8mm +/-0.2 [0.27 in +/-0.008in] to allow for
the thickness of the module and when installed, the insulator material shall compress in a range
of 5% to 10% at maximum hardware torque.

Figure 3. Example of a module 1mm apart from the vertical edge of the clip

Clip & Mounting System Recommended Minimum Specifications

First Solar recommends that a module retaining clip and mounting system should meet the following
minimum specifications:

 A module surface contact length of 70mm [2.76 inches] (80mm [3.15 inches] preferred)

© Copyright 2015, First Solar, Inc. PD-5-320-04 Rev 1.2| Page 4 of 10

 Front side module surface contact width between 13mm (0.51 inches] and 15mm [0.6 inches]
 Minimum back side module surface contact width of 15mm [0.6 inches]
The retaining clips may be designed to support the module from either both the front side and back side
surfaces, or only the front side surface. If the clip is designed to support and retain the module only at
the module’s front side surface, the design and profile of the support rails to which the clips are
mounted must be taken into consideration to satisfy the minimum back side surface contact width.

Support Rail Specifications

Module support rails (or equivalent) shall be designed to provide a uniform plane for installation for the
modules and module rail deflection shall not exceed the maximum deflection specified above. The
support rails shall be designed to support the modules, either across the 600mm [23.62 inch] width of
the module or along the entire span of the 1200mm [47.24 inch] length of the module. See Figure 4.

Module support rails, clips and rubber shall be fabricated from corrosion and UV resistant materials (ex.
pre-galvanized steel, hot dipped galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel, powder-coated steel, etc.)
that will maintain structural integrity over the lifespan of the modules (minimum 25 years).

Fasteners
It is the responsibility of vendors, customers, installers, design professionals, and engineers to follow a
due diligence process to ensure fasteners used prevent galvanic corrosion, environmental corrosion, and
provide electrical bonding between the clip and underlying structure as defined by local codes and
jurisdictions. First Solar does not make recommendation or test fasteners for these requirements.
Fasteners used in the mounting system testing provided by vendors, customers, installers, design
professionals, and engineers are expected to meet all these and necessary mechanical strength
requirements.

Insulators and Protective Materials
Laminate modules must be electrically insulated and protected from direct contact with metallic
surfaces of retaining clips, support rails, or other structural support components. Insulation and
protective materials tested and approved for use by First Solar for FS Series 4 module types are typically
Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) materials such as a cross-linked EPDM+Polypropylene blend or
equivalent and must have the minimum thickness specified in Figure 7. Minimal material thickness is
3mm for the top and bottom sections, and 2mm for the vertical section, both with volume resistivity >
1.0 x1014 Ω·cm per ASTM D257.

 Top Section: 3mm [0.12 in] minimum2 (in-

cludes “teeth” or “ridges”)

Moisture Drainage and Air Circulation
Retaining clips shall be designed and installed to facilitate drainage at the module interface, and should
be designed to prevent the trapping of moisture inside of the clip or at the edge of the laminate module.

In addition, the module structure should be designed to maximize air flow under the module to control
the module operating temperature.

Clip and Mounting System Approval

First Solar reserves the right to internally test samples of proposed retaining clip and support rail designs
prior to approval for use with First Solar modules. First Solar may, at First Solar’s sole discretion, test the
supplied samples per the procedures defined in IEC 61646 10.16 (Mechanical Load Test to 2400Pa), UL
1703 section 41 (Mechanical Loading Test to 2154Pa), and/or other tests deemed appropriate by First
Solar. If multiple retaining clip and module rail profile combinations are available, all combinations shall
be disclosed to First Solar for review and testing to worst case scenario. Samples submitted to First Solar
for testing shall be supplied with the respective clips, fasteners and module rails as per submitted design
drawings.

It is the responsibility of vendors, customers, installers, design professionals, and engineers to perform
static load test as defined in IEC 61646, 10.16 and verify compliance prior to submitting samples to First
Solar for approval.

Any mounting solution that deviates from the dimensional guidance for the clip, rails, or mounting con-
figuration as specified above shall be considered to be in compliance with this document if it has been
proven with high confidence (sample size >5 per configuration) to pass the test procedures defined in
IEC 61646 10.16 (Mechanical Load Test to 2400Pa), IEC 61730 MST 32 (Module Breakage Test), UL 1703
section 41 (Mechanical Loading Test to 2154Pa), IEC 62782 Dynamic Mechanical Loading and/or other
tests deemed appropriate by First Solar. A detailed test report that documents the test setup, method
and results shall be provided to First Solar for review and approval.

Mounting System Design Approval Process
First Solar module warranty requires that module mounting hardware is reviewed and approved as part
of First Solar’s System Design Approval (SDA) process. Required documentation is outlined below and
should be submitted to the First Solar Technical Support team5.

 Part drawing(s) of the proposed retaining clips, insulator, fasteners and number of support rails
with critical dimensions
 Assembly drawing(s) of the proposed module, retaining clip, and support rail assembly with criti-
cal dimensions and specified fasteners
 Assembly instructions with mounting location and fastener torque specifications
 Detailed description of any special tools or equipment needed for assembly.
Upon receiving the above items, First Solar will review the proposed design and decide to either accept
to test or reject the proposed design. If the design is accepted, First Solar will request all of the following
to mount two modules as shown in Figure 4 Details A and B:

 Samples of the clips (4 end clips, 2 mid clips) with rubber inserts

 Module mounting rails (minimum of 1600mm per rail)

 All hardware and fasteners needed for mounting the two modules.

If the testing is successful, First Solar will provide an FS Clip Number (PD-5-321-XXX) and a confirmation
of compliance.

A copy of all submitted drawings and samples will be retained by First Solar for historical record. First
Solar reserves the right to charge for mounting system approval and testing.

PV MODULE DRAWING (THIN FILM) - First Solar Series PV Module – Box Handling and Storage

FS Series PV Module - Box Handling and

Storage
This document provides information about the recommended handling of the standard box used to store and ship
First Solar FS-Series Modules.
Each First Solar packing box is filled with 50 or 54 modules, along with internal support material. For planning
purposes, a fully loaded box weighs up to a maximum of 665 kg (1466) for 50-module pack and 671 kg (1480
pounds) for 54-module pack. Packaging and wrapping variation may result in slightly lower actual weights. The box
includes an integral pallet for easy forklift transport. In order to maintain intended strength, all boxes should
remain dry and packed full with modules and support material. The modules and internal support material are
integral to the strength of the packaging. When full, intact and dry, the boxes can be vertically stacked indoors, up
to 4 boxes high for extended periods of time. If any of the modules or support materials are removed from the box
or the box is damaged or becomes wet, the boxes should not be stacked in any fashion.
When handling boxes using forklifts or other mechanical aids, ensure the box is supported uniformly, and that the
forks are fully extended under the pallet. Forklifts with forks of at least 4 ft in length are preferred. Do not scrape,
pierce, or bend the walls or cover of the boxes; the support capacity of the boxes will be weakened and the
modules could be damaged. Do not stack any boxes that have been physically damaged in any way.
Module boxes are intended to serve as a means to transport the modules to site and are not meant for extended
outdoor storage of modules. Box corrugate material will become brittle over time when exposed to outdoor
elements and will no longer provide the load strength it once did to house the modules safely. Indoor box storage
is recommended. If it is necessary to store boxes outdoors, they should be covered and protected from moisture.
If boxes have been stored outdoors for greater than 3 weeks, stacking is not permitted. Once a box has become
wet, drying will not restore it to its original strength. Never stack boxes that have been wet at any time, even if
they can be dried out. Boxes that have been wet should not be reused for transporting modules.

Failure to follow these recommended handling guidelines may result in damage to modules that will not be
covered under the First Solar FS Series module warranty.

2. Installation

2.1 Installation safety

 Always wear protective head gear, insulating gloves and safety shoes (with
rubber soles).
 Keep the PV module packed in the carton until installation.
 Do not touch the PV module unnecessarily during installation. The glass surface
and the frame may be hot. There is a risk of burns and electric shock.
 Do not work in rain, snow or windy conditions.
 Due to the risk of electrical shock, do not perform any work if the terminals of the
PV module are wet.
 Use insulated tools and do not use wet tools.
 When installing PV modules, do not drop any objects (e.g., PV modules or tools).
 Make sure flammable gasses are not generated or present near the installation
site.
 Insert interconnect connectors fully and correctly. Check all connections.
The interconnect cable should be securely fastened to the module frame, Cable
support should be done in a way to avoid the connector from scratching or
impacting the back sheet of the module.
 Do not touch the terminal box and the end of the interconnect cables (connectors)
with bare hands during installation or under sunlight, regardless of whether the
PV module is connected to or disconnect from the system.
 Do not expose the PV module to excessive loads on the surface of the PV
module or twist the frame.
 Do not hit or put excessive load on the glass or back sheet, this may break the
cells or cause micro crack.
 During the operation, don‟t use sharp tools to wipe the back sheet and glass. It
would leave scratch on the module.
 Do not drill holes on the frame. It may cause corrosion of the frame.
 For roof mounting structure, when install the modules, please try to follow the
“from top to bottom” and/or “from left to right” principle, and don‟t step on the
module, that will damage the module and would be dangerous for personal
safety.

- 6-
2.2 Installation Condition

2.2.1 Climate condition

Please install the modules in the following conditions:

a) Operating temperature: within –40°C(-4℉) to 85°C (185℉)
b) Relative humidity: within 45% to 95%.

﹡Note: The mechanical load bearing (include wind and snow loads) of the module is
based on the mounting methods. The professional system installer must be
responsible for mechanical load calculation according to the system design.

2.2.2 Site selection

In most applications, Jinko solar PV modules should be installed in a location where

they will receive maximum sunlight throughout the year. In the Northern Hemisphere,
the module should typically face south, and in the Southern Hemisphere, the modules
should typically face north. Modules facing 30 degrees away from true South (or
North) will lose approximately 10 to 15 percent of their power output. If the module
faces 60 degrees away from true South (or North), the power loss will be 20 to 30
percent.
When choosing a site, avoid trees, buildings or obstructions, which could cast
shadows on the solar photovoltaic modules especially during the winter months when
the arc of the sun is lowest over the horizon. Shading causes loss of output, even
though the factory fitted bypass diodes of the PV module will minimize any such loss.
Do not install the PV module near naked flame or flammable materials.
When solar modules are used to charge batteries, the battery must be installed in a
manner, which will protect the performance of the system and the safety of its users.
Follow the battery manufacturer‟s guidelines concerning installation, operation and
maintenance recommendations. In general, the battery (or battery bank) should be
away from the main flow of people and animal traffic. Select a battery site that is
protected from sunlight, rain, snow, debris, and is well ventilated. Most batteries

- 7-
generate hydrogen gas when charging, which can be explosive. Do not light matches
or create sparks near the battery bank. When a battery is installed outdoors, it should
be placed in an insulated and ventilated battery case specifically designed for the
purpose.
Do not install the PV module in a location where it would be immersed in water or
continually exposed to water from a sprinkler or fountain etc.

2.2.3 Tilt angle selection

The tilt angle of the PV module is measured between the surface of the PV module
and a horizontal ground surface (Figure 1). The PV module generates maximum
output power when it faces the sun directly.

Figure1: PV module tilt angle

For standalone systems with batteries where the PV modules are attached to a
permanent structure, the tilt angle of the PV modules should be selected to optimize
the performance based on seasonal load and sunlight. In general, if the PV output is
adequate when irradiance is low (e.g., winter), then the angle chosen should be
adequate during the rest of the year. For grid-connected installations where the PV
modules are attached to a permanent structure, PV modules should be tilted so that
the energy production from the PV modules will be maximized on an annual basis.

2.3 Mechanical Installation introduction

Solar PV modules usually can be mounted by using the following methods: screws
and clamps.

- 8-
﹡Note:
1) All installation methods herein are only for reference, and Jinko solar will not
provide related mounting components, the system installer or trained professional
personnel must be responsible for the PV system‟s design, installation, and
mechanical load calculation and security of the system.
2) Before installing, you should confirm below important things:
1) Visual check before installation, to make sure there is no bug in the packing
and junction box as well as the surface of module, If have , remove and clean
it .
2) Check the series number is right or not.
3) The modules installed at screws and the normal PV modules installed at the long
sides with clamps are designed to meet a maximum positive (or downward)
pressure of 5400Pa and negative (or upward) pressure of 2400 Pa (Refer to the
mentioned module type in Table 1 and 2 in this manual). The light PV module and
the modules installed at the short sides with clamps are designed to meet a
maximum positive (or downward) pressure of 2400Pa and negative (or upward)
pressure of 2400 Pa (Refer to the mentioned module type in Table 3 and 4 in this
manual). When mounting modules in snow-prone or high-wind environments,
Special care should be taken to mount the modules in a manner that provides
sufficient design strength while meeting local code requirements.

2.3.1 Fixation with screws

The applicable products please refer to table 1.

The frame of each module has 8 mounting holes (Length* Width: 14mm*9mm) used
to secure the modules to support structure. Always use all the eight mounting holes to
secure the modules. The module frame must be attached to a mounting rail using M8
corrosion-proof screws together with spring washers and flat washers in eight
symmetrical locations on the PV module. The applied torque should be big enough to
fix it steadily. Please find detailed mounting information in the below illustration,

2.3.2 Fixation with clamps at long sides of frames

The applicable Products please refer to Table 2, and only allow using clamps at long
side of frames.

The module clamps should not come into contact with the front glass and must not
deform the frame. Be sure to avoid shadowing effects from the module clamps. The
module frame is not to be modified under any circumstances. When choosing this
type of clamp-mounting method, please be sure to use at least four clamps on each
module, two clamps should be attached on each long sides of the module. Depending
on the local wind and snow loads, if excessive pressure load is expected, additional
clamps or support would be required to ensure the module can bear the load. The
applied torque should be big enough to fix it steadily(about 8 Nm), for safety, you‟d
better follow the clamps manufacture‟s recommendation. Please find detailed
mounting information in the below illustration, the mounting place distance is
suggested bigger than J and less than K,as shown below.

3. Wiring and connection

a) Before this procedure, please read the operation instructions of the PV system
carefully. Make wiring by Multi-connecting cables between the PV modules in
series or parallel connection, which is determined by user‟s configuration
requirement for system power, current and voltage.
b) PV module connected in series should have similar current. Modules must not be
connected together to create a voltage higher than the permitted system
voltage(1000VDC), as reference the maximum number of modules in series (N)
can be easily calculated by dividing the Maximum System Voltage of the modules
by the respective Voc value of the module. Any more please always take into
consideration the variation of the voltage under different temperatures, the Voc of
the modules will be rise when the temperature drops.
For example: with JKM190M-72 modules (Max. System voltage is 1000V) the
maximum series modules configuration number should NEVER can exceed N= 22
(1000V/45.2V = 22.1)
c) PV module connect in parallel should have similar voltage. As reference the
maximum number of modules in parallel (M) can be easily calculated by dividing
the maximum rated current (indicated in the electrical specification below) by Isc
value of the module, and then plus 1. Any more please always take into
consideration the variation of the current under different temperatures, the Isc of
the modules will be rise when the temperature goes up.
For example: with JKM190M-72 modules (the maximum rated current is 10A) the
maximum parallel modules configuration number should never exceed M= 2
(10A/5.56A+1=2.8).
d) Open the connection box of the control system and connect the cabled from the PV
arrays to the connection box in accordance with the installation indication of the PV
control systems. The cross-sectional area and cable connector capacity must
satisfy the maximum short-circuit of PV system (For a single component, we
recommended the cross-sectional area of cables is 4mm2 and the rated current of
connectors is more than 10A), otherwise cables and connectors will become
overheating for large current. Please pay attention: the temperature limit of cables
is 85℃ and the temperature limit of connector is 105℃
e) All module frames and mounting racks must be properly grounded in accordance

- 22 -
with local and national electrical codes. Attach the equipment grounding conductor
to the module frame using the hole and hardware provided. Not that a stainless
steel star washer is used between the ground wire and module frame (see picture
below). This washer is used to avoid corrosion due to dissimilar metals. Tighten the
screw securely.

Figure 8: The graph of Grounding

f) Follow the requirements of applicable local and national electrical codes.
g) These modules contain factory installed bypass diode .if these modules are
incorrectly connected to each other, the bypass diodes, cable or junction box may
be damaged.
h) The cable of the junction box is defined as L, as showed below. For Jinko standard
module, L is 900/1200mm; and for customized module, L can be based on your
condition. Please take the cable length into consideration before designing the
wiring layout.

Figure 9: Junction box

- 23 -
4. Maintenance and care

It is required to perform regular inspection and maintenance of the modules,

especially within warranty scope. To ensure optimum module performance, Jinko
recommends the following maintenance measures:

4.1 Visual Inspection

Inspect the Modules visually to find whether there are appearance defects, the
following need to be paid more attention especially:
a) Whether the glass is broken;
b) No sharp objects are in contact with the PV module surfaces
c) PV modules are not shaded by unwanted obstacles and/or foreign material
d) Corrosion along the cells‟ bus-bar. The corrosion is caused by the dampness
infiltrated into the Modules because that the surface encapsulation materials are
damaged during the installation or transportation.
f) Whether there is burning vestige on the backsheet.
g) Check fixing screws and mounting brackets are tight, adjust and tighten as
necessary.

4.2 Cleaning

a) A built up of dust or dirt on the module(s) front face will result in a decreased
energy output. Clean the panel(s) preferably once per annum if possible
(depend on site conditions) using a soft cloth dry or damp, as necessary. Water
with high mineral content may leave deposits on the glass surface and is not
recommended.
b) Never use abrasive material under any circumstances.
c) In order to reduce the potential for electrical and thermal shock, Jinko
recommends cleaning PV modules during early morning or late afternoon hours
when solar radiation is low and the modules are cooler, especially in regions
with hotter temperatures.
d) Never attempt to clean a PV module with broken glass or other signs of

- 24 -
exposed wiring, as this presents a shock hazard.

4.3 Inspection of Connector and Cable

It‟s recommended to implement the following preventive maintenance every 6

months:
a) Check the sealing gels of the junction box to ensure it have no crack or crevice.
b) Examine the PV module(s) for signs of deterioration. Check all wiring for
possible rodent damage, weathering and that all connections are tight and
corrosion free. Check electrical leakage to ground.

5. Electrical specification

The module electrical rating are measured under Standard Test Conditions, which
are 1000W/m2, irradiance with AM 1.5 spectrum and 25 deg (77°F) ambient
temperature. The module might produce more or less voltage or current than rating
value in uncertainty condition. Accordingly, the values of ISC and VOC marked on this
module should be multiplied by a factor of 1.25 when determining component voltage
ratings, conductor current ratings, fuse sizes, and size of controls connected to the
PV output.

The corresponding electrical specification can be downloaded from website

12.3 Appendix 3: Tapping screw operation notes

1. Preparation before operation

(1) The operating personnel should wear protective glasses in advance and avoid debris flying into the eye to
cause accidents during operation.

(2) Before operation, it must check the power is consistent with voltage on the power tool, which avoid connect
the wrong power source.

(3) Please double‐check the machine is in insulation protection situation and make sure screw do not loose.

(4) Drilling tool must be put into magnetic sleeve as per self‐tapping screw specifications requirement.

(5) It must protect machine wire and prevent rolling and cutting all around the floor, also not allow pull the wire
onto oil‐water and cause corrosion.

(6) When machine replace the drill bit, it should unplug the machine off, then use special wrench and drill key, it
must prevent use non‐specialized tool to beat the drill.

(7)  Remember  not  to  overexert  or  skewed  operated  when  drilling,  make  sure  attach  suitable  drill  bit,  use
uniform force while operation..

(8) Master and skillfully operate control mechanism, loose screws and other functions.

2. Operating tips:

(1)  Use  formal  magnetic  sleeve  to  ensure  self‐tapping  screw  sleeve  can  rely  on  its  own  magnetic  force,
adsorbed on the sleeve, do not fall off and skew because of its own gravity during tapping.

(2) The operator should directly facing the nail holes to ensure self‐tapping screw exactly align to pile hole, the
hand drill is located in front of the body, in order to support stability.

(3) Two hands clench hand drill, one clench hand grip, the other clench other handle (or intermediate cover),
keep vertical as much as possible, in order to ensure smooth and maximum force;

(4)  Tapping  force  should  be  uniform,  when  screw  wire  is  completely  screwing,  closing  force  and  release  the
trigger  switch,  use  electric  drill  inertia  and  screw  remaining  wire,  otherwise  it’s  easy  to  make  the  operator
injured, even produce rigid damage for screw.

31
3. Safety considerations:

(1)  Always  wear  protective  glasses  when  operation,  if  use  hammer  drill,  it  wear  a  dust  mask  depending  on
operating conditions.

(2) It should not wear loose clothing when working, if necessary, wear the sleeves, not wear work gloves, avoid
clothes or gloves to be involved in the rotating drill and caused injury.

(3)  When  use  drilling  tool,  the  required  power  outlets  may  not  access  lines,  the  power  source  should  have
leakage protection switch to prevent short circuit.

(4) Do not use the drill bit which exceeding the range.

(5) It must completely stop rotating when replace the drill machine, and unplug the power source.

12.4 Appendix 4: Attention on stainless steel fastener installation

Deadlock  often  occurred  in  stainless  steel,  aluminum  alloy  and  titanium  alloy  bolts.  These  alloy  material  has
anti‐corrosion performance. When the surface damage, they will produce a thin oxide layer to prevent further
corrosion. When the stainless steel bolt is locked tight, pressure between the threads and the heat will destroy
this  oxide  layer,  which  makes  blocking  or  shear  occur  between  threads,  and  adherent  phenomenon  happens
then. When this phenomenon continues, it will make the stainless steel fasteners completely locked and cannot
be  removed  or  continue  to  lock  any  more.  Usually  a  series  of  blocking  –  shear  ‐  adherent  –deadlock  actions
occur just in a few seconds, so we have to prevent this phenomenon by the correct understanding to use this
kind of fasteners.

Operating considerations

1. Check the threads are coarse or not before using, any scrap iron or dirt between threads, these things
often leads to self‐lock.
2. Lubrication can be done before using fasteners: it is recommended to use butter, molybdenum disulfide,
mica, graphite, or talcum powder for lubrication. Currently paraffin processing is common for lubrication to
prevent locking.
3. The speed and power to screw‐in should be appropriate. It can’t be too fast and too much. Choose torque

32
wrench or socket wrench if possible, and avoid using adjustable wrench or electric wrench. Over‐quick
speed can lead to temperature rising sharply and lock.
4. The direction of force application must be noted, nuts must be perpendicular to the axis of the bolts when
screw‐in.

12.5 Appendix 5: Attention on carbon steel fastener installation

Attention on installation
1. See  if  there  is  any  deformation,  crevasse,  iron  filings,  or  dirt  between  the  screw  threads  before  to  use,
these things often lead to deadlock.
2. Before installation, check whether there is damage on bolt antirust coating, bolts which antirust coating
has been damaged can’t be used.
3. When installation, torque should be follow torque meter of "appendix 2", not violent installation.
4. The speed and power to screw‐in should be appropriate. It can’t be too fast and too much. Choose torque
wrench or socket wrench if possible, and avoid using adjustable wrench or electric wrench. Over‐quick
speed will damage the surface of antirust coating.
5. The direction of force application must be noted, nuts must be perpendicular to the axis of the bolts
when screw‐in.
6. After  the  installation,  the  damage condition  of  bolt  head  should  be  checked,  such  as  coating  damaged,
need to replace the bolt, or spraying antirust coating (such as epoxy zinc‐rich paint).

Attention on maintenance:
1. According to the "ground structure maintenance manual", regularly inspect the bolts’ fastening situation
and rust situation.
2. When loose bolts have been found, Locking shall be done in accordance with the "appendix 2" torque
table.
3. If fasteners is rusty, rust removing and antirust treatment should be done according to the "ground
structure maintenance manual”;
