Lesson 2.4

Solving Linear Inequalities

I will be able to:

-Solve an inequality in
Objective: one or two variables
-Graph solutions of the
inequalities I have solved

Addition Property of Inequality

For all real numbers a, b, and c:

If a < b, then a + c < b + c

If a > b, then a + c > b + c

Means what?
If you do something to one side, do the same to the other side.

Multiplication Property of Inequality

For all real numbers a, b, and c:

c > 0: If a < b, then ac < bc & if a > b, then ac > bc

c < 0: If a < b, then ac > bc & if a > b, then ac < bc

Means what?

Special case for negative numbers: when multiplying or dividing by a negative flip the
sign.

Transitive Property of Inequality

For all real numbers a, b, and c:

If a < b and b < c, then a < c

If a > b and b > c, then a > c

Means what?
If x + 3 < y and y < 7, the x + 3 < 7; so this inequality can be solved.

A solution of a linear inequality in two variables, such as 2x + y < 4,

is an ordered pair.

The graph of all such solutions is a region of the coordinate plane

called a half-plane.

The edge of the half-plane is called the boundary.

2 kinds of boundaries:

1) Open half-plane: means boundary is not a part of the solution set.

< or >

2) Closed half-plane: means the boundary is a part of the solution set.

Test Point:
The shaded region represents all of the ordered pairs
that are solutions to the inequality. Any (x,y) pair that is
plugged into the inequality should produce a true
statement
Ex: Is (3,2) a solution for y < 4x + 5?
