My Stoke of Insight Project

By: Carter Pike

 Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in America, killing about 140,000 Americans
each year that’s 1 in every 20 deaths
 A stroke sometimes called a brain attack, occurs when a clot blocks the blood supply to
the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts
 Someone in the US has a stroke every 40 seconds. Every 4 minutes someone dies of a
stroke
 Every year, about 795,000 people have a stroke. About 610,000 of those are first of new
strokes; 185,000 are recurrent strokes
 Stroke is an important cause of disability. Stroke reduces mobility in more than half of
stroke survivors age 65 and over.
 Stroke costs the nation 34 billion dollars annually, including the cost of healthcare
services, medications, and lost productivity
All of these stats could’ve easily varied over the years considering Jill’s book was
published in 2008 the Ted Talk was in 2008 and the article “Superhighway to
Bliss” was also published in 2008 and the “Right Brain, Left Brain” was
published in 2014. Since now it is 2019 and the world hasn’t gotten any better.

 You cannot control some stroke risk factors, like hereditary, age, gender, and ethnicity.
Some medical conditions including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease,
diabetes overweight or obesity, and previous stroke or TIA can also raise your stroke risk.
Avoiding smoking and drinking too much alcohol, eating a balanced diet, and getting
your exercise are all choices you can make to reduce your risk.
This fact varied over all four sources mostly between the “Right Brain, Left
Brain” article and the “Superhighway to Bliss” article because they are written
with different styles and subjects in mind.

 Common stroke signs and symptoms

o Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg especially on one side of
the body
o Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
o Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
o Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
o Sudden severe headache with no known cause
In Jill’s book she also adds problems with memory, but her acronym repeats the
same stuff said here. And she said to call 911 immediately for the longer a stroke
goes on the more and more damage it causes, especially if it is hemorrhagic since
blood is poisonous to neurons.
