Chatterbox

by Margaret Wild

Play is the most powerful way young children learn.

E very time you play, sing or read to young children they
are learning about language.
By sharing this book and play activities with them they will
have the opportunity to:
• Use books as a starting point for oral language activities
• Use language in social play
• Learn about how books work
We hope these activities will provide you with a starting
point for fun play with young children.

Engaging With Chatterbox

Language and Literacy by Margaret Wild
Exploring Books With Children
• It is important to spend time talking with children about
books and how they work:
• Look at and talk about the cover
• Read the title, author and illustrator
• Make predictions and share personal experiences

• When reading to children there are a lot of things you

can model to them, eg:
• Holding the book the right way up
• Turn pages one at a time
• Begin at the front and read to the end

• Children will enjoy you having fun with books, for

example, pretend to read the book upside down and Notes
see if they catch you out.
...........................
• Sometimes point to the words when you read so
children learn that we read from top to bottom and left ...........................
to right. ...........................
• Rereading the same books helps children understand
...........................
that stories have a beginning (sets the scene), a middle
(usually a problem) and an end (problem is solved). ...........................
• Encourage children to join in sharing the book with you: ...........................
• Choose someone to help turn the pages
• Ask children to find things in the illustrations ...........................
• Let children take turns to talk about the pictures
...........................
• Let children finish off repetitive sentences
