The lecture was given by Mr.

Tariq Khan Advocate of Delhi High Court who is currently working at a


corporate law firm called Advani &Co. He is the alumni of faculty of law, Jamia. He gave a
motivational lecture on the topic “How to build a successful career in legal professional. He shared
his experiences with us and told us what he learned from them. He spoke about how to prosper in
the legal profession even if we are not national law universities or do not have legal professional
background. He shares a piece of his memory about his first mooting as a first year student. That
was the first time Jamia conducted the moot for the first year students. He had no clue about how to
progress with it but his seniors forced him to participate. At the same time many people were
sceptical about first year students in a moot but interestingly his team won. His first step of success
was to cut them loose who discourages you and destroy the negativity around you. You just have to
be confident while you are presenting yourself.

He spoke about respecting the faculty and administration and said instead of complaining about
things one should focus on positive things. Student should follow the culture, tradition and be the
family of the faculty. Culture is the most important thing. Respect the faculty and have basic
decency. Bridge the gap between yourself and the faculty.

He further discussed the importance of reading and writing in the legal profession. He told that to br
a good mooter one must be thorough with the content and be the master of fact. One must also
strictly analyses the issue and provide citation for the judgement.

He further spoke about internships as a part of growing up as a law student. He told that the
internship provide practical knowledge and at the same time it makes a good C.V. He concluded his
speech by quoting justice Benjamin N. Cardozo of the supreme Court of the United States “The
future, gentleman is yours and we have done our parts and we have played our roles in this ageless
process and long after we are dead and gone and little bit is forgotten, we will forward the torch to
you and we are confident that the flame will burn lighter when the torch is in your keeping.

Student also questioned about prospective career in arbitration which he addressed. Student also
ask about academic and cgpa. He told that it is not important as practical experience but it is the first
expression. He also gave advice on how to get a good marks. He said that the presentation is the
important thing. Student were impressed by his memory and ask him how he remembered the
citation and all things. He answered that if you have passion for learning you will remember what
you study. He also talks about law firm life.

It was the enriching session where we learned from Mr. Tariq Khan.
