Development of a New Computing Algorithm for Wind Farm Optimization

Introduction

Making a new discovery is like finding new land, a new planet and a new place for dwelling. It is exciting
to report that a new algorithm has been formulated for the solution of the Wind Turbine Optimization
problem.

It is definitely clear that renewables shall be the main source of energy by the mid twenty first century.
Already 51,473 Megawatts of Electricity was produced from Wind Energy in 2014 worldwide [1]. The
economies of scale have already tilted in favor of this new and exciting technology. Hence, it is now
possible to design wind farms with service life of about two decades and with a payback as low as three
years [2]. Why not contribute to this fascinating technology of wind by doing our part for the future of
mankind.

Studies have revealed that an array type of placement of wind farms does not yield an optimal output and
several algorithms have been tried, applied and tested for the solution of this problem. A window of
opportunity exists and needs to be fulfilled by overcoming the shortfall of studies in this area. The main
outcome of studies in this area is to be able to microsite the wind turbines in a better manner so as the cost
is reduced and the power is maximized.

Objective

This PhD had a definite target of achieving a new algorithm which has been attained and shall be
presented in the term report. A comprehensive Dissertation shall follow in the due course of time.

It is imperative for any design Engineer to place the wind turbines at the most effective placements. This
entails planning and simulation down to the finest detail before deploying equipment worth Millions of
Dollars.

It is now possible to emulate and simulate every possible combination of the wind turbines to determine
the feasibility of the said combination. Taking a step further, it is now possible to emulate and simulate
millions of permutations of this problem before a solution is found. This too, by improving the solution
by a little bit with every iteration as the program progresses.

Wind Energy

It is derived from the energy of the sun and is caused by the wind currents flowing due to uneven heating
of the earth’s surface. It is abundant on all parts of the planet to be of effective use for the masses.

Wind System Models and Techniques

Two main types of models have been investigated during this study and they are enumerated as
follows, [3], [4]–[7] & [8],

1) The Jensen Model –

Formulated by NO Jensen in the year 1983 while working at the prestigious Riso
National Laboratory of Denmark that has been cited in many studies of increasing
accuracy and improving results [9]–[12], [13]–[15].

2) The Computational Fluid Dynamics Models –

The latest Finite Element Method was investigated and a publication was made in this
chapter in the year 2016. [4]–[8], [16], [17].

Optimizing the wind turbines by various Algorithms

Application of the following algorithms has been made,

1) Firefly Algorithm [18]–[21]

2) Differential Evolution [22]–[27]

3) Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm (HMA) [28]

4) The proposed Dynastic Optimization Algorithm (DOA) [29]

The proposed algorithm shall be presented for the solution of the wind turbine optimization
problem.
