GEOTECHNICAL SURVEY OF STRATA CONDITIONS OF
PESHAWAR REGION USING GIS

INTRODUCTION:
The profiling and zoning of geotechnical sub-soil data is often
considered as one of the very important information for the planning
and a construction projects in civil engineering works. Data availability
can cut the expense of the projects and also reduce time, particularly
during feasibility and planning stage. In past few years, the numbers of
construction projects in Peshawar have increased rapidly.
Consequently, the number of soil boring reports has been accrued
largely. The presentation of already available sub-soil data in a user-
friendly format will enable the geo-technical and civil engineers
beforehand to plan the detail geotechnical investigation based on the
provided soil profile and STRATA MAPINGS (SMs). The SMs and
sub-soil profile will facilitate the geotechnical engineers for
preliminary design of foundations, feasibility study and preparation of
rough cost estimates for the proposed projects. The geographic
information system (GIS) is a valuable tool for geotechnical engineers,
not only for non-data area prediction but also used to interpret the
complex data area with reliability and accuracy.

LITERATURE REVIEW:
Significant progress has been made in the field of geotechnical surveys
in the past three decades of history of Peshawar. Government bodies
such as National Surveying agency who carried out the geo referenced
General Topographic Sheet (GTS) prepared by Survey of Pakistan in
1986 using a scale of 1:5000. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the
Peshawar district at 10 m interval was created from the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, Shuttle Radar Topography
Mission (SRTM) 90 m interval data for ascertaining the depth of the
bore logs from the Natural Surface Level (NSL). Positions of Standard
Penetration Test (SPT) soil samples were ascertained from Global
Positioning System (GPS) readings and assigned to the corresponding

latitudes and longitudes. Using Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW)

interpolating technique.
The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has initiated large scale
public transportation projects in Peshawar in association of MOTT
Macdonald Peshawar (MMP) with the sponsorship of Asian
Development Bank (ADB). The Bus Rapid Transit Project, BRT
Peshawar for short, was planned along one of the busiest routes of the
city and at certain multiple positions boring holes were initiated toward
depth of hard strata. Moreover, at every kilo-meter radius multiple tube
well were installed reaching the available water tables, that gives us the
review of the available water tables elevations and position along with
the strata behaviour.
Profiling and zoning of geotechnical sub-soil data using GIS has
previously researched that barely is to the NSL level classifying soil
and sand characteristics in the manner of zonings.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
In this research, the problems targeted are:
♦ The pre-prediction pre-arranging of the surveyed data
organization in order to avoid future cumbersome preliminary
surveys, which in turn will benefit us in saving time and a great
save of finance, that is spent on surveys before any mega project
initiation.
♦ Secondly, no detailed survey regarding Hard strata flow and the
availability of the water table (positions and depth) has been done
to the date. Like the incident in BRT Peshawar project of
unexpected presence of the water table at the pile drilling process,
at the location of Hastnagri chowk, Grand Trunk Road (GT.
Road), resulting in financial loss and time.

OBJECTIVES:
The research study is proposed to prepare
♦ Strata profile
♦ Strata Maps
♦ To furnish sufficient necessary reliable data regarding water table
distribution, hard strata depths and bearing capacity of soils in the
selected under study area of the Peshawar urban settlements.
This research work will assist the geotechnical and civil engineers
beforehand to plan the detail geotechnical investigation based on the
provided strata profile and SMs.

PESHAWAR REGION USING GIS

METHODOLOGY:
Phase 1
♦ Data collection (Strata charts of tube wells, pile stratification data
of all the mega projects of Peshawar)
♦ Organization and study of the collected data.
♦ GIS based determinations of Zones.
Phase 2
♦ GIS based coordinates marking
♦ GIS based plotting of stratification on map to specify points of
hard strata.
♦ GIS based plotting of water table distribution on map.
♦ Integrating all zones data regarding hard strata and water table
depths and capacities
Phase 3
♦ Universal mapping of the studied data of under study area.
♦ Animated demonstration of whole study and data.
♦ Presentation of 3D-model of the under-study area.
♦ Thesis drafting and finalization.

MANAGEMENT PLAN:
This section presents the schedule, costs, and qualifications for
completing the proposed research. To reach this goal, we will follow
the schedule presented in Table 1.1:
