For a large industry where 90% of

role in world commerce and

major factor. There are several
regulations and guidance in place by
IMO and national administrations

Apart from Basic Safety Training,

all matters related to maritime safety and maritime security which fall
within the scope of IMO, covering both passenger ships and different types
of cargo ships.

One of the main factors concerning shipboard safety is the human element
or human factor. Training plays a crucial role to have greater focus to the
human element and the International Convention on Standards of
Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), requires
that seafarers be provided with training which are intended to ensure that
seafarers are aware of the hazards of working on a vessel and can respond
appropriately in an emergency.
