Personal Narrative

By H. R. Nemcosky

When I first started on my college path, I didn’t really know what to do. I knew I wanted

to be an art major to begin with, because I am an only child of two artist parents, and it was safer

to be in a studio than to try something new. I applied to App State, I think back in 2017, but I

didn’t get in. Immediately my next plan was to go to Caldwell and get an art degree there. Again,

I didn’t know what exactly I was going to do, but I was thinking about being a book illustrator. I

was even looking at an entrepreneurship degree that a community college offers in the town that

my parents and I are going to move to. But later in my first semester of college, I was thinking

about how much I like volunteering at my local library, so I looked up what degree you have to

get in order to be a librarian. Soon I was in love with the idea of being a librarian, and it is

definitely something that I can see myself doing for the rest of my life (and there is no law that

says I can’t be a librarian and illustrate books).

In order to become a librarian, you need a Masters in Library Science, and in order to get

a masters, you of course need a bachelor’s degree. For a MLS in public libraries, it does not

matter what kind of bachelor’s degree you have, so long as you have it, so I am sticking to my art

major until I have earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. So, in order to complete my college path, I

am going to attend 3 colleges. First is CCC&TI for most of my associates degree, then my family

and I are going to move down to New Bern in the summer of 2020, (hopefully) and I’ll finish off

the last 2 semesters of my associates degree at their Craven Community college. Then, in the fall

of 2021, I will transfer to East Carolina University to get both my BFA and MLS degrees. The

Bachelor’s I can get in 8 semesters (including summer semesters), and the Masters in 3 semesters
(also including summer). By following this plain, I will graduate from college in the spring of

2025.

With being a librarian, you have to be well organized, good at researching, and working

with people, which I believe I fit all of these credentials. I have always been really well

organized, even as a kid, and I am pretty good at researching, although that is something I know

I will have to work on while getting my Masters. And although I am naturally an introvert, I am

pretty good at working and helping people during my volunteer work at the library, so I think I

would have no problem settling into the job. Overall, I want to work in a calm, friendly

environment where I can easily settle into a routine. I really like the plan I have made for myself,

and I am excited to go down this path.
