Summary of Findings

This study presented the preparedness of the newly employed civil engineering graduates
from batches 2009-2013 for employment on their desired job as perceived by the graduates and
by their employer. A sample size of 249 respondent were taken from the total number of 636 BS
civil engineering graduates. The following are the important finding of the study
1. Personal and Academic Profile
a. As to the age range of 249 respondent, 198 of the graduates or 79.52% of the total
sample have a age range of 26-30 years old, 42 or 16.78% were on the range age of
31-35 years old, 6 or 2.41% were on the range age of 36-40 years old and 3 or 1.2%
were in the age of 21-25 years old
b. In terms of the gender, it shows that the majority of the respondents are male which
has 163 or 65.46% and 86 or 34.54% were female
c. Batch 2013 have the highest percentage of respondent which 63 or 25.30% of the 249
graduates, followed by 2010 with 58 or 23.29%, 2011 with 49 or 19.68%, 2009 with
43 or 17.27%, and lastly 2012 with 14.46%
d. Among the 249 graduates who responded in the survey, 247 or 99.20% of them have
done the bachelor’s degree and 2 or .80% had finished Master’s degree..
e. In terms of the seminars or trainings they attended, 50 or 20.08% of the graduated
attended the PICE National seminar however 132 or 53.01% of the respondents did
not attend any seminar or trainings
f. 183 or 73.49 percent of the respondents passed the civil engineering licensure
examination, 14 or 5.62% passed the master plumber licensure, 10 or 4.02 percent
passed the other licensure examination related to their field while 64 or 25.70% did
not pass or take any examination

2. Job Placement Profile


a. In terms of the length of the time before the respondents find their first jobs, 150 or
63.60% of the respondent said that it took them less than a month after graduation to
find job, 64 or 27.10% answered immediate after graduation, 11 or 4.70% said it took
2 years. Others answers includes 1 year and 2 years and above
b. Majority or 128 of the respondents answered that they replied to job
ads/announcement to find their first job, 98 are through the help of personal contact
of friends, fellow student, etc. and 40 are though the help of family contacts of
parents and relative
c. In terms of their years working experience, 63 respondent have a 5 and above years of
experience, 40 have 4 years of experience, 36 have 3 years of experience. Others
responds includes 5 years, 2 years, 1 year and less than a year
d. Project Engineer and Quantity surveyor are the position of most of the respondents, it
has 31.36% and 17.37% respectively
e. Out of 18 employers, ranking first is 16 or 88.89% are general contractor, design
consultancy firm and construction estimating firm ranks in at second with both 1 or
5.56%.

g. In terms of monthly salary, 53.40% of the respondents are earning P40,000 and
above, 24.20% are receiving P20,00-P30,000, 19.10% are earing P30,000-P40,000,
and 3.40 are earning P15,000-P20,000 a month

3. Company Profile
a. Most of the company that respond to the survey are general contractor which has 16
or 88.89% and the rest are design consultancy firm and construction estimating firm
which has 5.56%

4. In terms of the minimum requirement of the company to the newly civil engineering
graduates for them to be hire, majority or 14 of the 18 employers answered that the
applicant must possess the skills required for the job, 11 said that the applicant must be a
passer of civil engineering examination licensure. Others answers includes gender of the
applicant, willing to be assigned at site, have good moral character, knowledgeable in MS
office and the school were the applicant graduated.

7. Using 2 sample t-test in the minitab 16, the researchers find out that there is no
significant difference between that perceptions of the immediate supervisor and the
newly employed BulSU civil engineering graduate in terms of their work preparedness.
