IN THE NEWS
Tributes to tragic Matthew
THE family of a man tragically killed in a road crash have paid tribute to him.
Matthew John Wilson, of The Swan Hotel, died when the Renault he was driving collided with
a tree, off the A51 Chester Road in Burford on Friday 8th October.
A family said: “Our son and Hannah’s brother tragically died following a road
traffic accident on Friday. Matt or Willow as he was known by many was in all
ways a mountain of a man - 6ft 4ins - and a heart that just about filled his chest.
“He was passionate about life, and although a young man he had talent beyond
his years. He will be missed by many and leaves a large whole in our lives.
“Matthew has for some time been on the tissue donation register and we are
very proud that he will be bringing hope to others.”

Pride award
TARPORLEY won the Community Spirit award at this year’s Cheshire Community Pride
Competition. The judges commended the town for its active societies and groups who ‘all work
together to make the village an attractive place to live’.

Objections to retirement village

PROTESTERS have vowed to fight plans to build a retirement complex in Tattenhall. The
Bolesworth Estate has applied for planning permission to convert farm buildings at Frog Hall
Farm into a retirement community which will house up to 200 people and employ 80 members
of staff. The main objections from the Tattenhall Action Group centre on traffic access in the
narrow roads nearby. The Bolesworth Estate says that the retirement village is preferable to
‘mass market housing’

Charged with burglary

Two men from Manchester have been charged with burglary after a pub in Tarporley was
broken into. Copper piping was stolen during a break-in at the Red Lion pub in Eaton,
Tarporley on Saturday 2nd October. Two men, a 37-year-old and 39-year-old were later
arrested and charged with burglary.

Castle stars in ‘Corrie’ DVD

Peckforton Castle is to feature in a DVD to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the soap
opera Coronation Street. ‘A Knight’s Tale’, which was filmed on location at Peckforton in
September, features the return of old favourites such as Reg Holdsworth and Curly Watts.

Help to trace war dead

A local war graves enthusiast has an interesting hobby of photographing War Memorials
and then tracing details of those named. He has visited most of the memorials in the nearby
villages and towns, indeed over much of the country, and including of course that in St.
Helen’s Churchyard at Tarporley. He has traced their force’s number, rank, date they died,
place of burial with plot number or the memorial where their name is inscribed if they have no
known grave. In addition, he has visited many of the War Cemeteries on the continent and
photographed many of the relevant head stones. Anyone wanting further information, please
contact Mr. E Butcher, Branch Secretary of Tarporley Royal British Legion on 01829 732704.

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL
NEWSLETTER Tel. 01829 733496
We have won two awards!!
Tarporley Parish Council is very pleased and proud that the village has won
the Cheshire Community Spirit Award for 2010, as well as the award for the
Best Kept Village with a population of 2,501 – 5,000 - both competitions run
locally by Cheshire Community Action. The plaques are up in the middle
of the village on the posts by the entrance to St Helen’s Church. It is a real
credit to all the hard work that is undertaken by volunteers in our village,
to make Tarporley an even better place to live and work. Very many thanks
everyone.

Winter Gritting
Concerned during the last 2 winters about many of the side roads and
pavements, which are not gritted by the Council, we are starting to get some volunteers together
who will undertake this by hand, near where they live. If you would like to help, please contact
the Clerk (John Macdonald on Tel 01829 733496). We will supply the salt, all equipment and some
guidance information.

TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL &
Sixth Form College

Students start the new term in style

Students at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College are turning heads with their new
school uniform. Students now wear an extremely smart and stylish uniform of a navy blue blazer,
light blue shirt, school tie and a grey skirt or grey trousers.
Headteacher Sarah Lee said: “The new uniform has made a big impression at school and in
our local community. So many people have contacted us to say how impressed they are with our
smart new image.
“The new blazers, featuring the school crest in gold, are so popular that there was a rush to
buy them before the end of the summer holidays and we had to order extra stock. We strive
for excellence in everything we do at Tarporley and we believe our new uniform reflects the
aspiration we have to be outstanding and to take our school from good to great.
“I want to thank our students, their
families and our staff. We all feel so
proud of our well turned-out boys and
girls for making such a smart start to the
academic year.”

Whilst the modest four page programme is intended to give our regular home

our secretary has been inundated with requests concerning our next home fixtures and
the availability of programmes.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. I am in my 40’s, I have wrinkles but I am also starting to get

breakouts of spots too! How can I treat both when anti-wrinkle
products always seem to be so much heavier than regular
products and cause the spots to get worse?
A. When choosing products for ageing skin people often reach
for heavy moisturisers and thick creams, but the texture of
the product is irrelevant unless your skin is also very dry.
What helps to make a difference are the active ingredients.
What you need to look out for are products with ingredients
such as vitamins A, C and E or green tea for their anti-oxidant
properties, ceramides or lecithin for their skin-identical
properties and peptides. Make sure that the active
ingredients are high up enough on the ingredient list
to make a difference too!
A moisturiser with a sunscreen is essential to
prevent further premature ageing, but sunscreens
can often cause break outs so be sure to find one
that it non-comedogenic (non-blackhead forming).
To help combat the blemishes the best option
is to start with a product containing 1% to 2% Angela Bartlett is a beauty and

Old Tarporley in focus

As an artist living in Tarporley

Peter Willis has always taken
photographs of the village.
As he looked back, he was
amazed at the changes
which have taken place in
his lifetime. This caused him
to take a great interest in old
photographs and many people
were enthusiastic and kind
enough to loan their old photos
to him. Not only the buildings
but the people who lived here
and their activities, for example
carnivals, garden parties
and amateur dramatics. The
collection has grown to such
an extent that Peter is planning
to exhibit them at St Helens
Church, Tarporley as a way of
raising funds for the steeple on
Saturday 6th November from
10am-4pm.
On Thursday 11th and
Friday 12th November, Peter
is holding his watercolour
painting exhibition.

colour can still be found
Gardening by Janet Heath

N ovember can be a dreary month but

colour can still be found in the garden
from berries and foliage. Many trees will
be showing rich autumn colour especially
Acers and crab apples or cherry trees.
The crab apple, Malus Golden Hornet has
bright yellow small apples that can stay on
the tree after the leaves have fallen. Some
Mountain Ash trees with yellow or white
berries also keep them into late autumn.

Whilst I do not like Pyracantha, mainly

because it has such long needle sharp
spines, they are covered in red, orange or
yellow berries which provide welcome colour
at the end of the year. If clipped to shape as
a hedge, this can be a striking hedge and will
grow in a variety of soil conditions.

You may find some plants are still

flowering such as the Kaffir lily or
Schizostylis coccinea. They have
grassy strap like foliage and lily
flowers in red or pink at the end of
the season. If grown in humus rich
soil they can be a striking plant but
in poor soil the foliage is untidy and
the flowering poor.

Jobs to do in the garden mainly

include cutting back dead and
unsightly foliage and protecting
brassicas from pigeons by netting
the plants.

If you want to create new borders,

autumn is an ideal time to start soil
preparation. If you are creating a border out of part of the lawn, remove the turf by skimming off the grass
and some soil up to 1.5cm deep. Stack the turf then dig over the soil to a spades depth. Take out a trench
at one end of the border to a spades depth and lay a layer of turf in the bottom upside down. Dig a second
trench to back fill the first and add more turf to cover the base and continue to the end of the border. This
is very hard work and best done in stages.

The turf will rot down over winter and provide good soil for plant roots. Add a layer of well rotted manure
5 to 8 cms deep on top of the roughly dug soil and leave over winter. If you have clay soil, the action of
frost and the manure will break it down by spring. The manure will add humus to the soil which acts as a
sponge, allows roots to grow more easily and enables plants to take up nutrients.

Peckforton & Beeston WI

The Rev Michael Burgess had everyone in fits of laughter at
the October meeting with his talk ‘For better or worse’. He had
numerous anecdotes of his life as a vicar conducting weddings,
illustrating his talk with several newspaper cuttings of strange
venues, odd behaviour and unusual dresses to reinforce his belief
that people often spend too much money and time on the wedding
day celebration and forget to plan their future life together.
Theatre trips to Mold to see “Lark Rise to Candleford” and Manchester’s Royal
Exchange for the comedy “Zack” have been planned as well as a walk around
Knutsford called ‘A Tour of Cranford’ on November 9th. The next meeting on
November 3rd will be The AGM when business will be followed by a 2-course
supper.
Why not come and join us at the Peckforton Village Rooms with meetings starting
at 7.30pm? For more information please telephone Judith Sherren on 01829
