Kieran’s journey into the world of tattooing has
been a lifelong passion, fueled by an inaccessible
talent creating, designing, drawing and painting
since his youth. Kieran is a graduate student of
Visual Arts, Printmaking, Electronic Design and
Interactive Media. This lead him to work as a
Graphic Designer and Animator, then altering his
trajectory into the world of Tattooing.

artists in the country, and I have the privilege to call them my friends.

Plumes of thick brown smoke roared

Tuesday 9 April.
The weatherboard house, on the
corner of Lay and Inglis streets was
uninsured.
Onlookers were helpless to assist as the
fire took hold and the call to Triple-000
was made at approximately 4pm.
A lone occupant, identified as a 24-year
old female, was clearly distressed and
anxious as she screamed for her pet
dog, throwing herself on the ground
numerous times as she waited for the
fire brigade to arrive.
The silence on that still, cool autumn
afternoon was only broken by the
crackling of the burning house. Sirens
in the distance eventually grew louder
with brigades arriving from Ballan,
Gordon, Greendale and Bacchus Marsh.

and blocked the main street, detouring

started in a chimney flue,” Ballan
brigade Lieutenant Billy Smith said.
“Amazingly the front rooms of the
house only suffered slight water and
smoke damage,” he said.
On scene, CFA District 15 Officer
Andrew Pearce told The Moorabool
News the house is uninhabitable at this
time.
“The occupants will need to
be supported for temporary
accommodation and consider a
rebuild,” he said.
Mr Pearce said the cause would be
investigated but believe it started in a
chimney with the fire mainly contained
in the roof, causing structural damage.

History of Dwelling
The dwelling at 34 Inglis Street is situated original
allotments 1 and 2 of Section 39 Township of Ballan,
first owned from 27 January 1873 by R. Salter and H.G
Salter respectively. In early May 1890, these allotments,
together with adjoining allotment 3 to the north, were
transferred to Henry Wilhelme, a groom. With his wife
Charlotte, the German immigrant came to Ballan in the
1870s and had three children.
The dwelling seems to have been constructed in c.1889
as Wilhelme was listed as the owner of a tenement at
Ballan in 1889. By November 1890, the property was
widely recognised in the township, being colloquially
knows as ‘Wilhelm’s corner’.
The dwelling has aesthetic significance as a representative
example of the modestly/scaled, gabled, timber
weatherboard Victorian vernacular styled dwellings that
reflect Ballan’s working-class residential development.
On 30 March 1901, Wilhelme’s property was advertised
for sale, it being described as follows:
“On account of Mr H Wilhelme, his house and
property, comprising 2a 1r.16p. land, on which is
erected is a very comfortable house of 6 rooms,
all necessary outbuildings, garden, in full bearing,
dairy, fowl house, and piggery, all in tip-top repair,
and in every way a desirable property.”

Abattoir
lambasted

Although vegan protesters caused chaos in Melbourne last
week, a local abattoir in Bacchus Marsh also became a target
of animal activists.
Westside Meats, located off Woolpack Rd in Bacchus Marsh,
was one of the spots for nation-wide protest by animal rights
activists on Monday, 8 April.
ABC News reported that 12-protesters blocked the driveway
of the abattoir using a vehicle since 5am Monday morning,
with the truck’s tyres deflated.
Protesters later withdrew from the abattoir after negotiating
with owners, who agreed to give the protesters one lamb.

Police confirmed to the Moorabool News that no charges
were laid from the Bacchus Marsh protest, and none likely.
Westside Meats did not provide a comment to the Moorabool
News after being contacted.
The Melbourne-wide protests led to the arrests of 40-people
in the CBD, including teenagers, after three vehicles were
used to block the intersection of Flinders and Swanston
streets.
Some protesters had chained themselves to the vehicles.
The protesters were arrested and interviewed by police and
have been charged with a total of 122 offences between them,
including obstruct emergency worker on duty, which can
lead to a maximum of five year’s imprisonment.

Two men in
custody after
alleged axe attack

It was mid-afternoon when the Moorabool News received a
report of four police cars in the vicinity of Main St Bacchus
Marsh, with police tape visible down a shared driveway to a
private property and a business.
Police media reported to the Moorabool News that two
Bacchus Marsh men, both aged in their late 30s, were arrested
in relation to an alleged assault with a small axe on Thursday
11 April.
The assault followed a verbal altercation in Main Street
Bacchus Marsh, alleged to be near Main St Dental and/or
opposite to the Michael Crawford Funeral Home, at around
2.10pm.
“One of the men sustained a minor injury to his arm and
declined treatment at the scene.
“Both men were taken into police custody and are assisting
police with their enquiries,” Police media said in a statement
to the Moorabool News.
The police investigation remains ongoing.

A Bacchus Marsh Grammar student is
riding high, after earning a string of wins
at the Australian Track Cycling National
Championship last weekend.
Graeme Frislie was crowned the Men’s U19
‘Champion of Champions’ in Brisbane over
the weekend of 6-7 of April, following a win
of two individual and two team gold medals.
Getting the gold isn’t anything out of the
ordinary for the Year 12 student, who had
already won the gold medal in the Omnium
National Championship in October last year.

has come under fire, allegedly underpaying
a Chinese worker more than $13,000 and
providing false records to inspectors.
The Fair Work Australia Ombudsman
announced last Thursday, 11 April that
legal action has commenced against Austop
Natural Therapy and Supplies Pty Ltd,
which operates the ‘Yin’s Chinese Massage’
massage parlour in the Bacchus Marsh
Village shopping centre.
Austop formerly operated the Ballarat store
of the same name, although no allegations
have been made against the store’s current
owners.
The FWO is acting against company
director Yusen Yin and secretary Wenhua
Liu, alleging they were involved in the
underpayments and failed to provide pay
slips to staff.
Between December 2016 and July 2017,
Austop allegedly paid an employee only a
percentage of the total price of each massage
she performed at its former Ballarat business,
rather than an hourly rate of pay.
This resulted in alleged underpayment
of the employee’s ordinary hourly rates,
overtime rates, weekend and public holiday
penalty rates, superannuation and annual
leave entitlements.
The employee was allegedly underpaid
a total of $13,522, with a small fraction
of the alleged underpayment remaining
outstanding.

Appeal for tin rattlers Stupid habit

After raising a record amount last year, the
Bacchus Marsh Lions Club are again seeking
volunteers to help collect money for the
2019 Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday
Appeal.
The Lions Club will be rattling tins leading
up to and on Good Friday, 19 April, and
are on the lookout for members of the
community who are willing to lend a hand.
“If you have some spare time, either in the
days leading up to Good Friday or on the
day itself, and are able assist, we would love
to hear from you,” said club spokesperson
Ralph Fletcher.
The local volunteer run Club has been
associated with the Good Friday Appeal
since 2005, and last year raised a record total
of $30,734.
As well as roaming collectors, there will
be purple Good Friday Appeal cans on the
counters of supportive local businesses
throughout Bacchus Marsh.
If you can lend a hand on Good Friday,
you can register at the Bacchus Marsh Fire
Station any time after 9am.
All volunteers are issued with an unpaid
volunteer name tag, a high visibility vest and
a collection can.
Good Friday personal donations can be
made at the Bacchus Marsh Fire Station,
Main Street on Friday, 19 April.

Old habits die hard for a young man caught
using his mobile phone whilst driving on a
busy Melbourne road.
The Bacchus Marsh Magistrates court heard
on Friday 5 April that 22-year-old Michael
Donald was travelling west on the West Gate
Freeway in Port Melbourne, when he was
observed allegedly using his mobile phone
whilst driving.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa
Schoemaker told the court Donald was
observed by police on August 16 last year,
his licence was suspended, and he wasn’t
displaying P-plates.
When intercepted by police, it was alleged

Wallace perfect for walnuts

With an impending army of robo-
squirrels, a drip-line underbelly
and remote-controlled tractors,
Phil Farnell looks like an evil geni-
us dominating the organic walnut
farming industry.
In real life, Phil isn’t evil – but he
is an agricultural revolutionary,
using his civil engineering back-
ground and cracking passion to
make Wellwood Wallace Walnuts
and Walnut Oil one of the most
technologically advanced farms in
the industry.
When the Farnell’s took over the
farm four years ago, they had al-
ready done their research, both
here and abroad, and identified
that ageing infrastructure was not
only problematic, but was also
holding the business back.
As with any farming business,
water was a big issue and it didn’t
help that the irrigation systems
were 20-years old.
“We’re installing a new irrigation
system to repair inefficiencies,”
Phil said. “We’re also burying
the system, a technique we came
across in America.
More than 90-kilometres worth
of new drip lines will be installed,
replacing the problematic above-
ground system which suffered
constant damage from vehicles and
livestock, and which also posed
a disease risk, as it used micro-
spray to water the trees, making
the trunks vulnerable as they were
always wet.

With the new underground drip
line area for each tree totalling an
area as large as 125-square metres,
it is also beneficial as it encourages
new feeder roots from the tree to
tap into nutrients in the soil, lead-
ing to improvements in production.
It hasn’t been easy to get started
though because, as many contrac-
tors told Phil, subterranean drip
lines are rare and so nobody had
the experience or skills to take on
the job.
Phil didn’t let that stop him and
now, with an installation team as-
sembled, he’s already got about five
kilometres of drip line buried.
It wasn’t the first problem that
Phil conquered – he had originally
intended to have GPS-guided trac-
tors operating by remote, but it
turned out that the canopies of the
walnut trees were too thick to let
the signal through.
“Now we’re looking at VHF signal
instead, like a radio transmission.”
Next on the list was the develop-
ment of the robo-squirrel.
“It’s like one of those automated
floor vacuum cleaners that are in
houses, but it’s set to go around
and pick up walnuts. I have a de-
veloper in Queensland working on
it and getting the squirrels to know

It is clever farming bringing a new
level of technology with a focus on
the benefits of automation across
the property.
So, it’s no surprise that Phil also
uses a drone.
“It provides an aerial view of the
trees, helping to monitor the effect
of watering by the condition of the
pasture under the trees.
“It saves time spent driving
through the trees,” Philip said.
Meanwhile, temperature, humid-
ity, rainfall and soil moisture are
all being measured by on-site data
loggers, with soil moisture probes
and automated weather monitor-
ing data being used with irrigation
controllers which, through a com-
puter simulation program, identify
if and when irrigation is needed for
the trees.
“That’s giving us live data over
15-minute intervals. Coupling that
with our rainfall measurements
and forecast rainfall, we’re able to
determine how much irrigation
water we need to apply,” he said.
The benefits haven’t, however,
come cheap.
Over the four years so far, the Far-
nell’s have invested $1million in
equipment, machinery, irrigation
capital items, shed extensions and
the drone.
Their capital purchases include
Borehole Solar pumps, solar panels
for electricity supply, water filtra-
tion units, in-line fertiliser applica-
tion, overhead water storage tanks,
the soil moisture probes, irriga-
tion controllers and the computer
weather station.
The sub-surface irrigation system
alone has a project price tag of
$370,000.
Although the expenditure that has
brought the farm well and truly
into this century’s advanced farm-
ing practices has been costly, the
return on investment is expected to
be, well, essentially… money grow-
ing on trees.
Phil is estimating that a peak tree
harvest of 30,000kg per annum
should be possible with the im-
proved efficiencies in irrigation.
One of the benefits of organic nut
farming is that the grower sets the
price – at about $27 per kilo for the
Wallace Walnuts.
The farm has 2880 walnut trees,
100-plus fruit trees and 30 chestnut
trees, with an on-farm factory pro-
cessing walnuts into oil.
The organic status of the orchards
also extends to the flock of sheep
and Phil is forecasting the on-farm
lamb production at around 1500kg
per year.

A local musician has been granted a spot in
a busker’s paradise – Bourke Street Mall.
Ballan resident Leon Conway was bestowed
with the coveted busker’s permit late last
year, which allows the musician to take his
‘Golden Era of Melbourne’-inspired tunes to
the heart of the city.
Mr Conway is a member of local band ‘The
Drongo and the Crow’ and has been busking
for “a couple of years now”, completing a
suburbs areas, which Mr Conway said has
been a “learning experience” to draw an
audience.
“My job is to grab people and hold them
steady…and I’m honing, I suppose, my act
and craft…[and] how I arrange my physical
space,” he said.
But Mr Conway hasn’t had to figure things
out alone, saying other buskers have been

was spoken to on Sunday 7 April by
firefighters, after lighting a fire in his

found in possession of a drug of dependence.

Re – ‘Tip Vouchers Dumped’

It is disappointing to think
that Moorabool Shire Coun-
cillors could not have the
foresight to vote in favour
of the ‘Tip Vouchers’, to help
stem the tide of rubbish scat-
tered through this ever more
disgusting dump we have
for our natural bush, reserve
parklands, freeway verges
and vacant blocks of land.
Illegal rubbish dumping is a
blight on our beautiful state.
As Cr Edwards argued at the

tight-fisted, lazy or irrespon-
sible, never have to pay tip
fees anytime, anywhere.
An annual voucher or two

Season launched for 2019 Devils overcome

As the autumn leaves change

football and netball is back for
another season.
The Ballarat Football Netball
League held their season launch
at Saxon House the week prior
to Round 1 kicking off last
weekend, with City Oval amass
with approximately 400 Under
9 football playing children; the
future of grassroots teams.
Joint BFNL Chairman Wayne
Baker said every year starts with
challenges.
“But behind me are our future,”
referring to the 400 strong Under
9s playing the game they love.
“There are always a few bumps
in the road, but the BFNL
team we are, we work together
through all the issues,” Mr
Baker said.
Acknowledged on the night
was BFNL Operations Manager
Aaron Nunn, who has taking a
position with AFL House.
“It was 12-years ago Aaron
joined the BFL and over that
12-years there have been highs
and lows; he never faulted in
his belief or direction. Aaron
worked through many issues for
successful outcomes,” Mr Baker
said.
“We will miss him, but we
are excited for his future as he
moves on to the AFL.”
Mr Nunn said the BFNL is the
best League because “it has the
best people in it.”
“Honestly, it is the best League
in the state. I have nothing but
respect for all the hard-working
volunteers and generous
sponsors of the clubs,” he said.

The Devil’s didn’t have it all
their own way. Scotland ac-
knowledged his team looked
lost in the opening term.
“Our first two practice
matches were pretty good
but our third (and last) was
poor,” he said.
“Unfortunately we took
some of that (form) in with
us.”
The new look Sunbury Li-
ons were up and about early
under new coach Travis
Hodgson but failed to capi-
talise on the scoreboard with
their superior work rate,
squandering repeat oppor-
tunities in front of goal and
leaving the Devils within
striking distance at the first
change.  Darley was able to
regroup and work their way
back into the game under
the guiding influence of
Nick Graham, Darren Leon-
ard and Shane Page.
“We were lucky to be as
close as we were,” Scotland
said. 
Sunbury had a dogged day
in front of the sticks with
dangerous forward Leigh
Brennan (five behinds) the
major culprit.  To add insult
to injury the Lions would
combine for a further seven
shots on goal that finished
out of bounds on the full.  Angwin, J. Spiteri 1, J. Cad-

‘hit outs’ department his work around the ground was
influential. Jacob Chisari, NIck Stuhldrier and Harrison King
enjoyed high numbers to start their season while the Aaron
Willets looked dangerous forward with flashes of brilliance.
Coach Davey has since had the opportunity to sleep on his
thoughts ahead of the review and narrow the focus moving
forward.
“There’s room for improvement especially with our ball
use, our ability coping with pressure and effectiveness out
of stoppage,” he said.
“We’ll be better for the run, I’m sure of it.”
Bacchus Marsh will have this Easter weekend off before a
Round 2 meeting with cross town rivals Darley on April 27
at Darley Park.

change to reclaim the coveted Jimmy Toohey Shield. In front
of a crammed crowd the Eagles struggled to keep up with an
organized Tiger team, hell bent on retrieving “The Shield”
that symbolizes so much more than the four points earned
when the final siren sounds.
Springbank dominated the scoreboard early with better use
of the football. Field kicking again hindered the Eagles’ solid
efforts. Unforced skill errors tested the best of patience as
players stumbled and fumbled their way forward. The Tigers
countered with precise ball use and would have been further
ahead at the first break but for a few missed opportunities
when kicking for goal.
By half time Springbank’s advantage had increased to 25
points. Gordon’s work rate was unquestioned. It soon became
glaringly clear that Gordon’s poor decisions and foot skills
were the difference between the two combatants.
One minute into the third quarter Springbank registered
another goal thanks mainly to an unmanned defensive goal
line. From that embarrassing error of judgement the Eagles
started to refine their output.
Gordon dominated the final quarter gradually reducing
the lead held by the floundering Tigers. Springbank’s only
goal for the term was helped by a 50-metre penalty against
an over enthusiastic Gordon player. Two more goals to
Sutcliffe and one each from the dashing Zac Ryan and the
hard-working Horsham saw the home side within a goal of
pinching a come from behind win. The Eagles certainly had
their chances to take the lead with missed set shots bringing
an unusual combined sound made up of cries of despair and
excited cheers. Many supporters looked as exhausted as the
players before them.
